Technical Performance

The CORALLY 48 DP PINION SHORT HARDENED STEEL 19 TEETH 5MM represents the convergence of precision engineering and practical racing experience. Built from special hardened steel rather than standard materials, this component is engineered to withstand the forces generated by modern brushless motors whilst maintaining precise tolerances that are critical to performance. The 48 DP module specification situates this pinion within the standard gearing ecosystem used in competitive electric RC racing, where tiny improvements in concentricity and tooth accuracy translate into measurable lap time improvements and reduced drivetrain wear. The gear length of 13mm combined with a teeth width of 6.2mm ensures robust engagement with your spur gear whilst maintaining the compact dimensions necessary for modern RC chassis design. The 2.0mm hex key size indicates a secure grub screw retention system that holds the pinion firmly to your 5mm motor shaft, preventing slippage during aggressive acceleration or deceleration. With 19 teeth, this pinion offers a gearing sweet spot that delivers strong acceleration characteristics whilst still permitting reasonable top speed, making it suitable for a wide range of track types from tight technical circuits to more flowing layouts. The ultra-precise tooth shaping and concentricity achieved through CNC manufacturing means minimal vibration during operation, reducing stress on your motor, ESC, and drivetrain components, ultimately extending the service life of your RC car's mechanical systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What gear ratio does a 19-tooth 48 DP pinion provide? — The 19-tooth pinion is designed to mesh with 48 DP spur gears in the standard RC racing range. The gear ratio depends on the tooth count of your spur gear; for example, a 19T pinion paired with a 69T spur gear creates a 3.63:1 ratio. Team Corally publishes complete gearing charts so you can calculate the exact ratios available with different spur gear combinations, allowing you to optimise your setup for acceleration, top speed, or a balanced combination depending on your track conditions.
  • Is this pinion compatible with my RC car? — The CORALLY 48 DP PINION is compatible with any RC car or truck that uses a 5mm motor shaft and 48 DP gearing. This includes many electric RC vehicles in the UK market; however, you should verify that your specific model uses 48 DP gearing rather than other standards like 32 DP or 64 DP, as mixing different module specifications will result in poor mesh engagement and potential damage. Consult your RC vehicle's manual or contact RC Model Shop if you're unsure about compatibility.
  • Why is a hardened steel pinion better than standard versions? — Hardened steel provides superior wear resistance and durability compared to standard materials, making it an excellent investment if you race frequently or operate in abrasive conditions such as outdoor asphalt tracks where particle wear can accelerate tooth degradation. The hardening process increases the material's hardness and fatigue resistance, allowing the pinion to maintain its precise tooth geometry longer and resist stripping even under the extreme loads generated by high-powered brushless motors. For competitive racing or intensive weekend bashing, hardened steel pinions represent a worthwhile upgrade that extends component life and maintains performance consistency.
  • What is concentricity and why does it matter? — Concentricity refers to how perfectly centred the gear is on its bore; if a gear lacks concentricity, it wobbles as it rotates, creating vibration, noise, and uneven tooth contact with the spur gear. This vibration introduces inefficiency, generates heat, and stresses your motor and drivetrain components. The CORALLY pinion's CNC-manufactured teeth and precision tolerances ensure exceptional concentricity, meaning the gear runs true without wobble, delivers smooth power transfer, and minimises mechanical stress throughout your drivetrain—critical advantages in competitive racing where every advantage counts.
  • Can I use this pinion as an upgrade to my existing RC car? — Yes, if your RC car currently uses 48 DP gearing with a 5mm motor shaft, the CORALLY 48 DP PINION represents a direct upgrade that will improve performance through better concentricity and material quality. The hardened steel construction and CNC-cut teeth will reduce vibration and wear compared to standard pinions, potentially improving handling consistency and extending component lifespan. To install it, simply remove the grub screw from your existing pinion, slide the old pinion off the motor shaft, position the new CORALLY pinion, and secure it with the supplied grub screw—a straightforward upgrade that requires no special tools beyond a 2.0mm hex key.
  • What other gear ratios are available? — Team Corally manufactures pinions in multiple tooth counts within the 48 DP range, allowing you to select different ratios to suit various conditions. Lower tooth counts (like 17T or 18T) create higher ratios for maximum acceleration but lower top speed, whilst higher tooth counts (like 20T or 21T) produce lower ratios for higher top speed with less initial acceleration. By pairing different pinion tooth counts with various spur gear sizes, you can fine-tune your vehicle's performance characteristics precisely—essential for competitive racers optimising setup for specific track layouts.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst the CORALLY 48 DP PINION is a precision component typically preferred by serious racers and experienced enthusiasts, it's equally suitable for beginners who want to start with quality equipment. Beginners benefit from the superior concentricity and durability that reduce maintenance intervals and increase reliability during the learning phase. The pinion's rugged hardened steel construction means it will withstand the occasional mistakes that come with learning, making it a sensible investment that won't require frequent replacement.
  • How do I identify if this pinion fits my RC car? — Check your vehicle's specifications or manual for the motor shaft diameter (must be 5mm) and gear pitch (must be 48 DP). If your car uses a different pitch like 32 DP or 64 DP, this pinion won't fit. You can also measure your existing pinion's bore diameter and compare it to 5mm. Each CORALLY pinion is marked with its tooth count, making visual identification straightforward when comparing to your current setup—if your existing pinion is also 48 DP and 5mm, you can proceed with confidence.
