Technical Performance

The Corally M0.6 21-tooth pinion represents a pinnacle of precision engineering in RC gearing technology. Built from special hardened steel and manufactured using advanced CNC machinery, this pinion delivers exceptional performance characteristics that discerning RC builders and racers demand. The gear features a module pitch of M0.6, which is the industry-standard metric pitch used in Tamiya-compatible RC cars and many other platforms throughout the RC car UK market. With a tooth count of 21, this pinion offers a versatile ratio option suitable for diverse driving conditions and performance profiles. The 3.17mm motor shaft diameter ensures compatibility with standard Tamiya motors and other RC powerplants featuring equivalent shaft specifications. At 9mm in overall gear length and featuring 4mm tooth width, the pinion integrates seamlessly into standard RC car drivetrains without modification. The CNC-cut tooth design delivers ultra-precise shaping that guarantees perfect concentricity and vibration-free operation, critical factors for competitive racing where even minor vibrations can affect handling and consistency. The hardened steel material significantly extends service life compared to standard steel alternatives, resisting tooth wear and deformation even under sustained high-load conditions. A 1.5mm hex key is required for secure mounting, making installation straightforward for builders of any experience level. Whether you are tuning a brushless RC car for maximum acceleration or balancing top speed with drivability for mixed-surface racing, the ability to experiment with different pinion teeth counts using this 21-tooth option gives you precise control over your vehicle's performance characteristics.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — A pinion gear is the small gear mounted on your motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear in your transmission. The ratio between pinion and spur gear teeth determines your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics. A smaller pinion tooth count (like this 21-tooth option) increases top speed but reduces acceleration, whilst larger pinion counts improve acceleration at the expense of maximum velocity. Choosing the right pinion is essential for optimising your RC car's performance for your specific track and driving style.
  • Is the Corally M0.6 pinion compatible with Tamiya RC cars? — Yes, absolutely. This pinion is specifically designed for all cars equipped with M0.6 gears, and M0.6 is the standard gearing module used across the Tamiya RC car range. If your RC car uses Tamiya M0.6 gears, this pinion will integrate seamlessly into your drivetrain without any modifications or compatibility concerns.
  • What is the difference between this 21-tooth pinion and other tooth count options? — Corally manufactures M0.6 pinions across a full range of tooth counts, each offering different performance characteristics. The 21-tooth version provides a mid-range option that balances acceleration and top speed effectively. Lower tooth counts increase top speed but reduce low-end acceleration, whilst higher tooth counts improve acceleration but limit maximum velocity. Your choice depends on your track layout and preferred driving characteristics.
  • Does this pinion require any special tools for installation? — Installation requires only a 1.5mm hex key, which is a standard tool found in most RC builder kits. Simply align the pinion on your motor shaft and tighten the set screw with the hex key until secure. No specialist equipment or technical expertise is required for straightforward installation.
  • Why is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Hardened steel undergoes a special heat treatment process that significantly increases its hardness and resistance to wear and deformation. This extended durability means your pinion will maintain its tooth profile longer, resisting the gradual wear that softens performance over time. For racers and serious hobbyists, hardened steel pinions deliver better long-term value and more consistent performance throughout a season of use.
  • Can I use this pinion with brushless or brushed motors? — Yes, this pinion is compatible with any motor featuring a 3.17mm shaft diameter, regardless of whether you are running a brushless or brushed powerplant. The pinion itself is motor-agnostic; what matters is shaft diameter compatibility, which this 3.17mm specification satisfies for most standard Tamiya motors.
  • How do I know which pinion tooth count to choose? — Start by consulting your vehicle's manual for recommended gearing ratios for your specific driving conditions and track type. Generally, lower tooth counts (larger gear ratios) suit high-speed open tracks and top-speed runs, whilst higher tooth counts suit tight technical courses where acceleration and mid-range punch are more valuable. Many RC enthusiasts carry multiple pinions to experiment and fine-tune their setup throughout a race season.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst pinion replacement is a straightforward task, this component is specifically for users who already have an RC car with compatible M0.6 gearing. If you are completely new to RC cars, you may be better served starting with a ready-to-run RC car UK model that comes fully assembled. However, if you already own a Tamiya RC car and want to upgrade your drivetrain components, this pinion is absolutely beginner-friendly to install and use.
