Technical Performance

The Corally C-71616 M0.6 pinion represents the pinnacle of precision gear manufacturing for RC vehicles. This 16-tooth pinion is engineered from special hardened steel that has been specifically formulated and heat-treated to withstand the extreme forces generated during acceleration, cornering, and high-speed driving. The hardening process increases the material's hardness and wear resistance dramatically compared to standard steel gears, which translates to dramatically extended service life and consistent performance even under the most demanding racing conditions. The CNC cutting process ensures that every tooth features the exact same profile and geometry, eliminating the micro-variations found in mass-produced alternatives that can cause vibration, noise, and premature wear. The 4.00mm tooth width provides sufficient contact surface for reliable power transmission whilst remaining compact enough for space-constrained drivetrain layouts typical of modern RC cars. With a 9.00mm overall length, this pinion fits seamlessly into standard transmission housings used across the Tamiya RC car range and compatible platforms. The 3.17mm shaft bore is precisely machined to accommodate standard motor shafts, ensuring a fit tight enough to prevent slippage yet smooth enough to allow for easy installation and removal. When properly meshed with an appropriately-sized M0.6 spur gear, this pinion delivers consistent, quiet, vibration-free operation that maximises drivetrain efficiency and minimises stress on downstream components like differentials and universal joints. The ultra-precise concentricity achieved through Corally's manufacturing process means the gear spins with minimal lateral run-out, a critical factor in maintaining consistent mesh geometry and preventing the accelerated wear that occurs when gears run off-centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a 16-tooth and 17-tooth pinion gear for RC cars? — Each additional tooth on a pinion gear has a significant effect on your vehicle's performance characteristics. A 16-tooth pinion provides slightly lower top speed compared to a 15-tooth but delivers improved acceleration and torque, making it ideal for technical tracks with frequent corners and obstacles. If you need more top-end speed for open, flowing layouts, a 17-tooth or 18-tooth pinion would be better, whilst a 14-tooth or 15-tooth would maximise acceleration at the expense of top speed. The 16-tooth strikes an excellent balance for most drivers and track conditions across RC racing in the UK.
  • Will this Corally pinion work with my Tamiya RC car? — Yes, absolutely. This M0.6 module pinion is specifically designed for compatibility with Tamiya vehicles that use M0.6 gearing systems. The 3.17mm shaft diameter matches standard Tamiya motor shafts perfectly, and the M0.6 pitch ensures seamless meshing with Tamiya spur gears. Whether you're running a Tamiya TT-02, DF-03, or similar platform, this pinion will integrate directly into your drivetrain without any modifications required.
  • Is this pinion suitable for beginners in the RC hobby? — This is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced drivers. Beginners benefit from the quality construction and reliability, knowing they won't experience the gear failures or inconsistent performance that cheaper alternatives might suffer. The 16-tooth count is forgiving and works well across various track types, making it ideal for learning and developing driving skills. Experienced racers appreciate the precision manufacturing and durability that allows them to focus on driving performance rather than worrying about component failures.
  • How does hardened steel compare to other pinion gear materials? — Hardened steel offers superior wear resistance and strength compared to standard steel, aluminium, or brass alternatives. Standard steel gears soften and wear relatively quickly under sustained racing use, whilst hardened steel maintains its hardness and tooth profile for significantly longer, reducing the frequency of gear changes and ensuring more consistent performance throughout a race season. This makes Corally's hardened steel pinions an exceptional value proposition despite their premium price point, as they outlast cheaper alternatives by a substantial margin.
  • What does CNC-cut teeth mean and why does it matter? — CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) gear cutting uses precision machinery to automatically shape each tooth to exact specifications, ensuring perfect geometry and consistency across every tooth. This contrasts with stamped or cast gears that can have slight variations causing vibration, noise, and accelerated wear. CNC-cut teeth deliver smoother meshing, quieter operation, improved power transmission efficiency, and dramatically extended component life, making this manufacturing method worth the investment for serious RC enthusiasts.
  • Can I use this pinion with non-Tamiya RC cars? — Provided your RC vehicle uses M0.6 metric pitch gearing and has a 3.17mm motor shaft, this pinion will work perfectly regardless of the vehicle brand. Many RC manufacturers beyond Tamiya produce cars compatible with M0.6 transmission systems. Check your vehicle's documentation or contact the manufacturer to confirm M0.6 compatibility before purchasing. If your car uses a different module pitch (such as M0.8 or 0.6 metric) or shaft diameter, this pinion will not be compatible.
  • How do I install this pinion on my motor shaft? — Installation is straightforward and requires only basic tools. First, slide the pinion onto your motor shaft, aligning the bore with the shaft. Insert the supplied set screw through the pinion gear's hex hole and thread it into the motor shaft. Use a 1.5mm hex key to tighten the set screw securely, ensuring the pinion cannot rotate on the shaft. Avoid over-tightening, which could damage the shaft threads. Once installed, verify the pinion runs smoothly without lateral wobbling before reassembling your transmission.
  • What spur gear sizes work best with this 16-tooth pinion? — The appropriate spur gear depends on your desired gear ratio and track conditions. A smaller spur gear (such as 66 or 70 teeth) creates a higher numerical ratio favouring acceleration, whilst a larger spur gear (such as 80 or 86 teeth) creates a lower numerical ratio favouring top speed. Consult your RC car's manual for recommended spur gear sizes, or experiment with different combinations to find the setup that delivers the performance characteristics you prefer. Team Corally produces M0.6 spur gears in various tooth counts to complement this pinion.
  • How long will this pinion last in regular use? — The hardened steel construction and precision manufacturing mean this pinion will outlast standard steel alternatives by a substantial margin. With regular maintenance including occasional cleaning and inspection, you can expect hundreds of hours of reliable service. The lifespan depends on your driving style, track surface conditions, and maintenance discipline. Aggressive driving on rough surfaces will wear gears faster than careful driving on smooth tracks. If you notice grinding sounds or visible tooth damage, it's time to replace the pinion.
  • Is this the right pinion for competitive racing? — Absolutely. Team Corally's pinion gears are used by serious racers and competitors throughout Europe. The precision manufacturing, hardened steel construction, and reliability make this an excellent choice for competitive applications where consistency and durability are critical to success. Many racers keep multiple pinions with different tooth counts in their pit bag, allowing rapid setup changes between qualifying and racing to optimise performance for changing track conditions.
