Overview

The Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 23 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71523) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for discerning RC enthusiasts who demand the very best performance from their electric RC cars. Whether you're running a competitive 1/10 scale buggy on a UK track, setting up a high-performance drift car, or tuning your RC racer for maximum speed and efficiency, this pinion gear delivers the concentricity and durability you need. Team Corally has built a reputation for manufacturing world-class RC components, and this 23-tooth pinion is no exception. It's the perfect choice for hobbyists and serious competitors alike who want to upgrade their drivetrain with professional-grade components.

This hardened steel pinion gear represents the pinnacle of precision manufacturing, created on specialist CNC machinery to ensure every tooth is perfectly shaped and every rotation is vibration-free. The 23-tooth configuration offers an ideal middle-ground gear ratio that suits a wide variety of track conditions and driving styles, making it an excellent upgrade option for anyone looking to fine-tune their RC car's performance. The fact that it's marked with the tooth number for easy identification means you'll never mix up your gears during setup or maintenance.

Available in all standard gearing sizes, Corally pinions allow you to experiment and find the perfect gear ratio for your specific track conditions and driving preferences. If you run a 32DP gearbox on your RC car (the most common pitch in the RC car hobby in the UK and beyond), this pinion will integrate seamlessly into your existing drivetrain, provided your motor has a 3.17mm shaft diameter.

Key Features

  • Special Hardened Steel Construction — Manufactured from specially formulated hardened steel, this pinion gear delivers exceptional toughness and durability that withstands the punishment of high-speed racing, bashing, and competitive driving sessions. Unlike standard pinions, hardened steel resists wear, stripping, and deformation, ensuring your gear ratios remain consistent and your drivetrain stays responsive over hundreds of hours of use.
  • CNC-Cut Teeth for Perfect Shape and Concentricity — Every tooth on this pinion is machined on precision CNC equipment, guaranteeing perfect tooth geometry and ultra-true running characteristics. This exceptional concentricity eliminates vibration during operation, which translates directly to smoother power delivery, reduced noise, less stress on your ESC and motor, and ultimately faster lap times because your motor can operate at its peak efficiency without wasted energy.
  • 32 DP Gear Pitch — The 32 DP (Diametral Pitch) specification means this pinion is compatible with the massive range of 32DP gearboxes found in modern 1/10 scale electric RC cars, buggies, trucks, and on-road racing platforms. This is the industry standard pitch for competitive and recreational RC vehicles across the UK and worldwide, ensuring you'll find a huge selection of compatible spur gears to dial in your exact gear ratio needs.
  • 23 Teeth Configuration — The 23-tooth count provides an excellent versatile gear ratio that balances acceleration, top speed, and drivability for most track conditions. This tooth count is ideal for mixed-surface racing, technical tracks with corners and jumps, and general recreational driving where you want responsive handling without sacrificing top-end speed.
  • 3.17mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — Designed specifically for motors with a 3.17mm shaft diameter (a standard size across most brushless and brushed RC motors), installation is straightforward with no adapters required. Simply slide the pinion onto your motor shaft and secure it with the included 1.5mm hex key grub screw for a rock-solid, vibration-free connection.
  • 9mm Gear Length with 4mm Tooth Width — The compact 9mm overall length keeps weight to a minimum while the 4mm tooth width provides ample contact surface with your spur gear for reliable power transmission without slipping or jumping teeth, even under maximum acceleration or aggressive cornering.
  • Easy Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with its tooth number, eliminating any confusion when swapping gears between different setups or vehicles. This simple but invaluable feature saves time during maintenance and ensures you always have the correct ratio installed, preventing costly mistakes that could damage your drivetrain.
  • Made in Europe — Manufactured to the highest standards in Europe, these pinions benefit from strict quality control, precise engineering tolerances, and a commitment to excellence that's reflected in their performance. European manufacturing ensures consistency and reliability that you can depend on, race after race.

Technical Performance

This 23-tooth pinion gear represents the convergence of advanced materials science and precision engineering. Team Corally's decision to utilise special hardened steel elevates this component far above basic alternatives, providing resistance to the micro-fractures and wear that plague softer steels during high-load operation. The material composition has been specifically developed to handle the repetitive stress cycles of RC motor operation, where gear teeth experience millions of meshing cycles with the spur gear. The CNC cutting process isn't merely about creating teeth; it's about creating a gear where every tooth is geometrically identical to its neighbours, eliminating the harmonic vibrations that occur when tooth profiles vary even slightly. This ultra-precise manufacturing guarantees concentricity that separates professional-grade components from budget alternatives. When your pinion runs with true concentricity, the motor shaft axis remains perfectly aligned with the centre of rotation, minimising lateral forces and vibration that would otherwise be transmitted through the gearbox. For users of 1/10 scale electric RC cars (the most popular class in the UK hobby), selecting the correct pinion tooth count is crucial to matching your motor's power delivery to your spur gear. The 23-tooth option here sits in the sweet spot of the range: aggressive enough to enable strong acceleration even from lower-KV brushless motors (typically 4000KV to 6000KV), yet not so aggressive that you'll experience excessive voltage sag, overheating, or power loss on tight, technical tracks. When combined with a 50-tooth or 51-tooth spur gear (the most common spur sizes), this 23T pinion produces a gear ratio of approximately 2.17 to 2.22, which suits mixed-surface racing, freestyle driving, and on-road carpet tracks. The 4mm width of each tooth ensures robust contact with your spur gear, preventing the tooth jumping and slipping that can occur with narrower pinions, particularly when you're at full throttle or hitting kerbs and obstacles. Whether you're running a 2S LiPo setup on a casual weekend bash or pushing a 4S or 6S system in competitive racing, this hardened steel pinion will reliably deliver consistent performance without degradation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What motor shaft sizes does this 23-tooth pinion fit? — This pinion is machined specifically for 3.17mm motor shafts, which is the standard shaft diameter found on the vast majority of modern brushless motors used in 1/10 scale RC cars and buggies across the UK. If your motor has a different shaft size (such as 5mm, 2mm, or 2.3mm), you'll need a different pinion variant. Always check your motor specifications before ordering.
  • Which spur gears does this pinion work with? — This pinion is designed to mesh with any 32 DP spur gear. The most common spur sizes paired with a 23-tooth pinion are 50-tooth and 51-tooth options, which produce gear ratios suitable for most track conditions. Your specific choice of spur gear will depend on your motor KV rating, battery voltage, and track characteristics.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. While this is a high-quality professional component, it's equally appropriate for beginners building or upgrading their first RC car. The precision engineering actually makes it easier for newcomers because the true running characteristics mean less vibration and smoother operation, which translates to more predictable handling and faster learning curves. The only requirement is that your motor has a matching 3.17mm shaft diameter.
  • How is this pinion different from cheaper alternatives? — This Corally pinion stands apart through its hardened steel composition, CNC-precision tooth cutting, and ultra-true concentricity. Budget pinions are often stamped rather than cut, leading to imprecise tooth profiles, runout, and vibration. Over time, cheaper pinions also wear and strip more quickly, particularly when used with higher-power brushless motors on 4S and 6S LiPo setups. Investing in a quality pinion from Corally means better performance, longer component life, and ultimately lower total cost of ownership.
  • What battery voltage does this pinion require? — This is a mechanical component and isn't voltage-specific. It will work with any battery voltage setup—2S, 3S, 4S, or even higher 6S LiPo systems—provided your motor has the correct 3.17mm shaft diameter. Your choice of battery voltage should be determined by your motor's specifications, your ESC's current rating, and your vehicle's design, not by the pinion.
  • How do I install this pinion on my motor? — Simply slide the pinion onto your 3.17mm motor shaft until it reaches the position you desire (typically flush with the end of the shaft for maximum engagement), then use the included 1.5mm hex key to tighten the grub screw firmly. Ensure the pinion is held securely to prevent slipping during operation, but don't over-tighten as this could deform the shaft.
  • Can I use this with my existing RC car? — Only if your RC car has a 1/10 scale electric motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter and uses a 32 DP gearbox. If you're unsure, consult your vehicle's manual or contact the manufacturer. This is particularly important because using an incompatible pinion can cause serious drivetrain damage.
