Overview

The Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 20 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71520) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability, performance and exact specifications. Whether you're running a competitive 1/10 scale RC buggy, a stadium truck, or a general-purpose basher, this high-performance pinion gear is an essential component for achieving the perfect gear ratio and smooth power delivery. Team Corally, a recognised manufacturer of quality RC components, has engineered this pinion to deliver exceptional durability and vibration-free operation, making it an ideal upgrade or replacement for any 32DP gearing system.

This 20-tooth pinion is manufactured from special hardened steel and created on precision CNC machinery to ensure perfect tooth geometry and concentricity. The gear is built to tight tolerances that eliminate runout and vibration, delivering smooth engagement with your spur gear and consistent power transfer from your motor to the drivetrain. Every pinion is individually marked with the tooth count for quick identification during setup changes, making it easy to swap ratios on the track or at the workshop. Available in a comprehensive range of tooth counts, the Corally pinion system allows you to fine-tune your gear ratio to match any track condition, weather, or driving style—whether you need aggressive acceleration or higher top speed.

The 3.17mm motor shaft diameter is a standard specification for many modern RC electric motors in the UK hobby market, making this pinion compatible with a wide range of vehicles and motor brands. If you're upgrading a worn pinion, switching to a different gear ratio, or building a new RC car from scratch, the Corally 32 DP 20T pinion delivers the precision engineering and build quality you expect from a European-manufactured component.

Key Features

  • Special Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from special hardened steel, which dramatically increases toughness, wear resistance and longevity compared to softer materials, ensuring your gear maintains its tooth profile and mesh integrity even under high torque and competitive racing conditions.
  • CNC-Cut Teeth with Perfect Geometry — Every tooth is cut on a special gear machine using CNC precision, guaranteeing perfect tooth shape, consistent pitch spacing and true running surfaces that eliminate vibration, noise and binding during operation.
  • Unparalleled Concentricity — The manufacturing process and tight tolerances ensure that the pinion runs perfectly true and concentric, which is critical for smooth mesh with your spur gear, reduced friction losses, and longer component lifespan.
  • Ultra-True Running for Vibration-Free Operation — The combination of CNC tooth cutting, special steel material and precise tolerances results in ultra-smooth, vibration-free running that improves handling responsiveness, reduces noise, and protects other drivetrain components from shock loads.
  • 32 DP Module (32 Pitch Diametral) — The 32DP specification means this pinion is compatible with all other 32DP gears and spur gears in the Corally range and many other manufacturers, allowing flexible gear ratio selection across a wide vehicle platform.
  • 20 Tooth Count — The 20T configuration provides a balanced gear ratio that works well for general-purpose RC driving, track racing, and freestyle bashing, offering good acceleration and speed characteristics for most 1/10 scale vehicles.
  • 3.17mm Motor Shaft Diameter — This industry-standard shaft size ensures compatibility with a broad selection of modern brushless and brushed RC motors available in the UK market, making replacement and upgrades straightforward.
  • Individual Tooth Count Marking — Each pinion is marked with its tooth number for easy identification, which is invaluable when you're managing multiple gear ratios or making quick track-side adjustments during competitive racing or practice sessions.
  • Compact Short Design — The short pinion profile minimises rotating mass and reduces drivetrain inertia, contributing to faster acceleration response and improved efficiency when powering your RC car.
  • Made in Europe — Manufactured to strict European standards, this pinion represents the quality engineering and precision that European RC component makers are known for, giving you confidence in reliability and performance.

Technical Performance

The Corally 32 DP 20T pinion represents a serious engineering approach to gear manufacturing that directly impacts your RC car's performance. The special hardened steel material provides exceptional durability and wear resistance, which is crucial because gears experience constant meshing stress and can be subject to shock loads during aggressive driving. The CNC manufacturing process creates teeth with perfect involute profiles, meaning the tooth flanks engage smoothly with your spur gear throughout the rotation, eliminating binding and the resulting friction and heat generation. The ultra-precise concentricity ensures that the pinion's axis of rotation is perfectly aligned with the mounting hole, so there is no runout or wobble that could cause vibration or uneven load distribution. This level of engineering is particularly important in competitive RC racing environments across the UK, where every fraction of a second counts and reliability determines race outcomes. The 32DP specification (diametral pitch) is a widely adopted standard in modern 1/10 scale RC vehicles, ensuring compatibility with spur gears from Corally and many other manufacturers. The 20-tooth configuration sits in the middle range of pinion sizes, delivering a balanced combination of acceleration and top speed that works well for most track conditions and driving styles. With a 3.17mm shaft diameter and 4mm tooth width, the pinion provides sufficient surface area for secure mounting and reliable power transmission. The overall gear length of 9mm keeps the pinion compact while maintaining adequate tooth engagement depth, and the 1.5mm hex key ensures that mounting and removal is quick and straightforward with standard workshop tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need one in my RC car? — A pinion gear is the small gear that mounts directly onto your RC motor's shaft and meshes with a larger spur gear on the main drivetrain. The ratio between the pinion tooth count and spur tooth count determines your vehicle's gear ratio, which affects acceleration, top speed, and overall performance characteristics. Changing the pinion is one of the quickest ways to tune your RC car's performance for different tracks or driving styles without purchasing a completely new motor or gearbox.
  • Is the Corally 32 DP pinion suitable for beginners? — Yes, the Corally pinion is suitable for any experience level. Beginners will appreciate that it's easy to install (requiring only a 1.5mm hex key), and the robust hardened steel construction means it will withstand learning crashes and aggressive driving. Experienced racers will value the precision engineering and tight tolerances that support competitive-level performance and reliability.
  • What motor shaft size does this pinion fit? — This pinion is designed for motors with a 3.17mm shaft diameter, which is a standard specification for many modern brushless and brushed RC motors in the UK market. Always check your motor specifications before purchasing to ensure compatibility.
  • What is the difference between 32DP and other pinion specifications? — The DP (Diametral Pitch) specification indicates the gear's tooth spacing and size relative to the pitch diameter. A 32DP pinion has finer, more closely spaced teeth than a 48DP pinion, for example. This affects which spur gears are compatible and the overall gear ratio options available. Always use a pinion and spur gear with matching DP specifications to ensure proper mesh and performance.
  • How do I know which tooth count pinion to choose? — The tooth count determines your vehicle's final drive ratio. Fewer teeth on the pinion (like a 16T or 17T) create a higher gear ratio, giving you more acceleration but lower top speed. More teeth on the pinion (like a 21T or 22T) create a lower gear ratio, delivering higher top speed but less aggressive acceleration. The 20T is a balanced middle-ground option that works well for general-purpose driving and most track conditions. Your choice depends on track size, surface grip, motor KV rating, and battery voltage.
  • What makes Corally pinions better than cheap alternatives? — Corally pinions are manufactured from special hardened steel using CNC precision machinery, ensuring perfect tooth geometry, concentricity and tight tolerances. This means ultra-smooth, vibration-free operation, longer lifespan, and better power transmission efficiency. Cheaper pinions often have inconsistent tooth profiles and runout, leading to vibration, noise, premature wear and potential breakage under load.
  • Can I use this pinion on any RC car? — This pinion is compatible with any RC vehicle that uses 32DP gears and a 3.17mm motor shaft. This includes many modern 1/10 scale buggies, stadium trucks, short-course trucks and on-road sedans from various manufacturers. Always verify that your vehicle's spur gear is also 32DP and that your motor shaft is 3.17mm diameter before purchasing.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With normal recreational use, a quality pinion like the Corally should last many months or longer. In competitive racing with frequent track use, you might replace it every few months as teeth gradually wear. Always inspect your pinion regularly for chipped or worn teeth, and replace it immediately if you notice any damage, as a damaged pinion can damage your spur gear and cause drivetrain issues.
