Key Features
- Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from specially hardened steel, which provides superior strength and exceptional durability compared to standard steel gears. This hardening process prevents tooth stripping, deformation and premature wear, ensuring your drivetrain can handle the high torque loads generated by brushless motors and demanding driving conditions.
- CNC-Ground Teeth for Perfect Geometry — Each tooth is precisely ground using CNC machinery to deliver perfect tooth form and concentricity. This precision engineering eliminates inconsistencies in tooth shape that can cause vibration, noise and uneven power delivery, resulting in smooth, quiet operation and more efficient power transfer from motor to gearbox.
- 16-Tooth Configuration — The 16-tooth count is a popular choice for RC vehicles seeking a balanced setup between acceleration and top speed. This tooth count works well across a variety of racing disciplines and casual driving scenarios, making it an excellent choice if you're fine-tuning your gear ratio for optimal performance.
- 32 DP Module Specification — The 32 DP (diametral pitch) rating ensures compatibility with a vast range of RC gearboxes and motor setups. This is one of the most common pitch standards in the RC hobby, meaning replacement and upgrade options are readily available throughout the UK RC market.
- 3.17mm Motor Shaft Diameter — The pinion is precisely machined to fit 3.17mm diameter motor shafts, which is the standard size found on most modern brushless and brushed RC motors. The tight tolerance ensures a secure, wobble-free fit that maintains alignment and maximises power transmission efficiency.
- Compact Short-Length Design — At just 9mm in overall length with a 4mm tooth width, this is a short-format pinion that fits within tight motor mount spaces on modern RC vehicles. The compact design helps minimise drivetrain complexity whilst maintaining full engagement with your spur gear.
- Tooth Identification Marking — Each pinion is marked clearly with the tooth count (16T), making rapid identification simple when you're swapping gears for different track conditions or comparing gears in your spares box. This labelling saves time during setup changes and ensures you never accidentally install the wrong gear ratio.
- European Manufacturing Quality — Team Corally produces these pinions in Europe using rigorous quality control standards. This means consistent material properties, tight tolerances and reliability that you can depend on for both competitive racing and recreational driving.
Technical Performance
The Corally C-71516 pinion achieves its reputation for reliability through meticulous engineering and premium material selection. The specially hardened steel used in this component undergoes a sophisticated heat-treatment process that increases surface hardness whilst maintaining toughness in the core of each tooth. This dual-hardness approach prevents brittle failure whilst resisting the wear and deformation that can occur during high-speed operation. The CNC-grinding process used to shape each tooth ensures that the pitch diameter, pressure angle and profile are perfectly accurate to the 32 DP specification, which is critical for smooth meshing with your spur gear. When a pinion tooth engages with a spur gear tooth, even microscopic deviations in tooth profile can create impact loading that generates vibration, noise and accelerated wear; the precision of the Corally design eliminates these issues. The 9mm gear length with 4mm tooth width provides an optimal contact pattern that distributes load evenly across the tooth engagement zone, reducing peak stress and extending component lifespan. The 1.5mm hex key size (for the grub screw that secures the pinion to your motor shaft) is a standard specification that works with virtually all RC motor pullers and installation tools. For RC enthusiasts in the UK running competitive setups with modern brushless motors and LiPo batteries, this pinion will handle the high RPM and torque output without hesitation. Whether you're powering through a high-grip asphalt circuit, tackling off-road terrain or enjoying high-speed bashing sessions, the Corally hardened steel pinion delivers the performance and longevity expected from a professional-grade drivetrain component.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this pinion compatible with my RC car? — The Corally C-71516 is compatible with any RC vehicle that uses a 32 DP gearbox with a 3.17mm diameter motor shaft. This includes numerous popular models from various manufacturers. To confirm compatibility, check your vehicle's specifications to verify it uses 32 DP gears and has a standard 3.17mm motor shaft. If you're unsure, our experienced team at RC Model Shop can help you identify whether this pinion will work with your specific model.
- What are the advantages of hardened steel over standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes a heat-treatment process that significantly increases its surface hardness, making it far more resistant to wear, tooth stripping and deformation under load. Standard steel gears soften and wear more quickly, especially when used with powerful brushless motors. The hardened steel used in the Corally pinion maintains its geometry over thousands of hours of operation, preserving the precise tooth profile needed for smooth, efficient power delivery.
- How does the 16-tooth configuration affect performance? — The tooth count directly influences your vehicle's gear ratio. A 16-tooth pinion paired with a given spur gear creates a specific ratio that affects acceleration, top speed and motor strain. Sixteen teeth is a popular mid-range choice that works well for balanced performance across various driving conditions. Fewer teeth increase acceleration but reduce top speed, whilst more teeth do the opposite. Your choice depends on your circuit layout, driving style and desired performance characteristics.
- What is the difference between 32 DP and other pitch standards? — DP (diametral pitch) defines how many teeth appear per inch of pitch diameter. A 32 DP gear has more teeth per inch than lower DP numbers like 48 DP, making 32 DP gears larger and more robust. The 32 DP standard is widely used in 1/10 scale RC vehicles because it offers a good balance between tooth strength and compact sizing. This is the industry standard for most popular RC vehicles in the UK market.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and the hardened steel quality of the Corally C-71516, you can expect thousands of hours of reliable service. However, if you notice signs of tooth wear, chipping or difficulty accelerating, it's time to replace your pinion. Keeping your pinion clean and properly lubricated extends its lifespan significantly. Many racers keep spare pinions in different tooth counts to optimise their setup for different track conditions.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst the Corally pinion is certainly appropriate for newer RC enthusiasts, it's primarily a replacement component rather than a complete beginner's solution. You'll need to understand your vehicle's drivetrain and how to safely remove and install the pinion using proper tools. If you're new to RC and unsure about drivetrain maintenance, our team at RC Model Shop is happy to provide guidance and support.
- Can I use this with brushless motors? — Yes, the Corally hardened steel pinion is fully compatible with modern brushless motors commonly used in RC cars across the UK. The hardened steel construction is actually particularly well-suited to brushless systems, which typically deliver higher RPM and torque than brushed alternatives, placing greater demands on drivetrain components.
