Technical Performance

The Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 12 Teeth represents the pinnacle of gear manufacturing for RC cars in the UK market. The 32DP pitch standard is the preferred choice for high-performance RC racing because it offers an optimal balance between strength and precision—smaller tooth modules allow for more teeth to fit in the same space, resulting in smoother engagement and less backlash than larger pitch gears. The 12-tooth configuration means this pinion will mate with larger spur gears to provide gear ratios suitable for competitive racing. With a shaft diameter of 3.17mm, this component is compatible with the vast majority of modern brushless and brushed RC motors on the market. The tooth width of 4.00mm and overall gear length of 9.00mm ensure proper alignment with standard spur gears whilst maintaining the short profile that fits modern motor mounts. The inclusion of a 1.5mm hex key size for secure mounting demonstrates the attention to detail in this design. The hardened steel material composition provides exceptional durability under the high stresses of competitive racing, whilst the CNC-precision tooth cutting ensures that engagement with the spur gear is perfectly smooth, eliminating noise, vibration, and inefficiency. For drivers in the UK pushing their RC vehicles to the limit, this pinion delivers the mechanical precision and reliability that separates consistent winners from occasional participants. The special hardened steel resists tooth stripping and maintains its dimensional stability throughout countless heat cycles, crucial for maintaining performance consistency during extended racing sessions or multiple heats.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need to upgrade it? — A pinion gear is the small gear that mounts directly onto your RC motor's shaft and transfers power to the larger spur gear on your vehicle's transmission. The pinion gear's tooth count directly determines your gear ratio: fewer teeth means higher acceleration but lower top speed, while more teeth means higher top speed but slower acceleration. By upgrading to a precision component like the Corally C-71512, you get smoother, more efficient power transfer compared to stock gears, which improves handling, reduces vibration, and extends the life of your entire drivetrain. Many UK RC racers carry multiple pinions in different tooth counts to optimise their setup for different track layouts without needing to change their entire transmission.
  • Is the Corally 12-tooth pinion suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst this is a performance-grade component ideal for competitive RC drivers, beginners will also benefit from its superior engineering and smooth operation. The 12-tooth configuration provides responsive acceleration perfect for learning vehicle control, and the durability of the hardened steel construction means it will last through the inevitable crashes and learning experiences that come with discovering RC motoring. Many beginners upgrade to quality pinions like this one because they provide better value in the long run—premium components last longer and perform better than budget alternatives.
  • Which 3.17mm motor shaft vehicles does this work with? — This pinion is compatible with virtually all modern RC motors featuring a 3.17mm shaft, which includes most brushless and brushed motors used in 1/10-scale electric RC cars. To verify compatibility, simply check your RC motor's specifications for the shaft diameter—if it's 3.17mm (sometimes listed as .125 inches), this pinion will fit perfectly. The 32DP pitch means it will work with any other 32DP spur gear regardless of the spur gear's tooth count or manufacturer.
  • What tooth count should I choose for my track? — The tooth count determines your gear ratio and thus your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics. The 12-tooth pinion offers balanced performance: it accelerates quicker than higher tooth counts (like 13T or 14T) whilst providing more top speed than lower counts (like 10T or 11T). For tight, technical tracks with multiple turns, lower tooth counts provide better acceleration response. For faster, more open tracks, higher tooth counts allow for more top speed. Most competitive UK RC drivers carry a selection of pinions to optimise for different conditions—the 12T is an excellent starting point.
  • Why are CNC-cut teeth important? — CNC-machined teeth are cut to precise tolerances that ensure perfect tooth profile and concentricity, meaning each tooth sits in exact alignment with the others. This precision engineering delivers several critical benefits: smoother engagement with your spur gear (reducing vibration and noise), more efficient power transfer (meaning faster acceleration and higher top speeds for the same motor power), longer component life (because teeth wear evenly rather than developing flat spots), and improved handling (because vibration reduction translates to more predictable vehicle behaviour). Budget pinions often have imprecise tooth shapes that cause binding, slippage, and premature wear—the investment in a quality Corally component pays dividends over time.
  • What makes hardened steel superior to standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes a specialised heat treatment process that increases its hardness and wear resistance whilst maintaining toughness—meaning it resists deformation under the enormous stresses generated by an RC motor's power transmission. During intense racing, pinion teeth experience incredible forces as they mesh with the spur gear thousands of times per second. Standard steel can develop flat spots, micro-fractures, or gradual deformation under these stresses, leading to slippage and eventual tooth stripping. Corally's special hardened steel maintains its shape and sharpness indefinitely, delivering consistent performance throughout the pinion's lifespan, which is why racing teams UK-wide specify hardened steel pinions for competitive events.
