Whether you're looking to improve acceleration, increase top speed, or simply replace a worn component, this hardened steel pinion delivers the quality and consistency you expect from a premium RC component.
Key Features
- Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which significantly increases its resistance to wear, deformation, and tooth stripping compared to standard steel or plastic alternatives. This extended durability means you'll spend less time replacing components and more time enjoying your RC car UK experience, whilst also representing better value for money over the long term.
- 48 DP Pitch — The 48 diametral pitch specification ensures compatibility with Corally's comprehensive drivetrain ecosystem and many other popular RC brands. The 48 DP standard is widely recognised in the RC hobby and allows you to source matching spur gears and other drivetrain components with confidence, making gear ratio adjustments straightforward and cost-effective.
- 23-Tooth Configuration — The 23-tooth count positions this pinion in the mid-range of the Corally lineup, providing users with a sensible balance between acceleration and top speed. This tooth count is particularly suitable for general-purpose RC driving, whether you're exploring off-road terrain or running on-road circuits, and suits both experienced drivers and those progressing their skills.
- 3.17mm Shaft Diameter — The standard 3.17mm shaft diameter (also known as 1/8-inch) is the specification used on most modern brushless RC car motors and drivetrain systems. This universal sizing means the pinion gear will integrate seamlessly into your existing setup without requiring adapters or modifications, ensuring proper alignment and smooth power transfer.
- Short Profile Design — The short-length profile of this pinion is engineered to fit vehicles with space-constrained motor mounting arrangements. The compact design ensures that the pinion sits correctly in relation to your spur gear, maintaining proper mesh engagement and preventing the kind of mesh issues that can lead to noise, vibration, and premature wear in your drivetrain.
Technical Performance
This Corally 48 DP pinion gear represents the kind of precision engineering that underpins successful RC car UK operations, whether you're a weekend basher or a serious competitor. The hardened steel material has been selected specifically to withstand the enormous rotational forces transmitted through modern brushless RC car drivetrains, where power outputs can exceed several kilowatts during acceleration and cornering. The 48 DP pitch is a mathematical specification that defines the size relationship between the pinion and its matching spur gear — the finer the pitch, the smaller the teeth and the greater the number of teeth available in a given space. This allows for more precise gearing ratios and smoother power delivery compared to coarser pitch systems. The 3.17mm shaft diameter is the industry-standard specification for most brushless motor shafts in the 1/10, 1/8, and similar scale RC vehicles, ensuring mechanical compatibility across a wide range of vehicles and manufacturers. The 23-tooth specification places this pinion in a moderate range — lower tooth counts offer better acceleration but lower top speed, whilst higher tooth counts increase top speed at the expense of acceleration response. The short profile ensures the pinion engages correctly with your spur gear without interference from motor mounting brackets or suspension components. For those running their RC buggy or truck in demanding conditions, keeping spare pinion gears of different tooth counts allows you to quickly adapt your vehicle to different track layouts, driving styles, or terrain types without significant downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does 48 DP mean on RC pinion gears? — DP stands for diametral pitch, which is a specification that defines the size and spacing of the teeth on the gear. A 48 DP pinion has 48 teeth per inch of diameter, resulting in smaller, more finely-spaced teeth compared to lower DP gears like 32 DP. The finer teeth allow for more precise gearing ratios and smoother engagement between pinion and spur gear, which is why 48 DP gears are popular in precision-engineered RC systems where smooth power delivery and minimal backlash are important.
- How do I know what tooth count pinion I need? — The correct tooth count depends on your specific RC vehicle, the gearing ratio of your spur gear, and the performance characteristics you want to achieve. Lower tooth counts (13-18 teeth) provide maximum acceleration but lower top speed, making them ideal for tight, technical tracks. Mid-range counts like this 23-tooth option work well for general-purpose driving and mixed terrain. Higher tooth counts (30+ teeth) sacrifice acceleration for increased top speed, suitable for high-speed racing on open circuits. Most RC car UK manufacturers provide recommended pinion sizes in their documentation, and many experienced drivers carry several different pinion gears to allow quick adjustments between racing sessions.
- Is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Yes, hardened steel is significantly superior for pinion gears. The hardening process increases the material's hardness and wear resistance, allowing it to withstand the enormous rotational forces in modern brushless RC drivetrains without developing cracks, stripping teeth, or deforming under load. Whilst hardened steel pinions cost more initially than soft steel alternatives, they last considerably longer and maintain their performance characteristics over many more driving hours, representing much better value for money in the long term.
- Will this pinion fit my RC motor? — This pinion will fit any brushless or brushed RC motor with a standard 3.17mm shaft diameter, which includes the vast majority of modern RC car UK motors in scales from 1/10 to 1/8 and larger. However, you should verify that your specific motor has a 3.17mm shaft — some older or specialty motors may use different shaft sizes like 2.3mm, 4mm, or 5mm. Check your motor's specification sheet or contact the manufacturer if you're unsure. Additionally, you'll need a compatible spur gear (also 48 DP) for the pinion to mesh with properly.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on several factors including driving style, track surface, maintenance habits, and the quality of your drivetrain mesh. With proper maintenance and appropriate mesh engagement, a hardened steel pinion like this one should provide many hours of reliable service. Signs that replacement may be needed include visible tooth damage, increased drivetrain noise, loss of acceleration smoothness, or if you notice the pinion spinning freely on the shaft without proper engagement. Many serious RC drivers keep spare pinions of different tooth counts available so they can respond immediately to wear or damage without delaying their racing schedule.
- Can I use different tooth count pinions on the same vehicle? — Yes, absolutely. The beauty of the modular RC system is that you can change your pinion gear to alter your vehicle's gearing ratio and performance characteristics. Swapping from a 23-tooth pinion to a 21-tooth pinion will increase acceleration but reduce top speed, whilst changing to a 25-tooth pinion will increase top speed at the expense of acceleration response. Many RC enthusiasts carry multiple pinion gears to different track days or terrain types, allowing them to optimise their setup for each specific situation. Always ensure your replacement pinion is the same DP (48 DP in this case) and shaft diameter (3.17mm) as your original.
