Key Features
- Special Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from high-quality hardened steel that provides exceptional toughness and durability compared to standard steel alternatives. This material choice means the gear can withstand repeated high-torque impacts and prolonged high-speed operation without stripping, cracking or deforming, giving you extended component life and better value for money.
- CNC Cut Teeth for Perfect Concentricity — Each tooth is precisely cut using computer numerical control machines to ensure perfect tooth shape and ultra-true running characteristics. This CNC precision engineering eliminates the vibration and noise that comes with lower-quality gears, resulting in smoother power delivery and more predictable handling throughout your driving session.
- 22 Teeth Configuration — The 22-tooth count is a popular mid-range setting that balances acceleration response with top speed potential. This tooth count is ideal for general-purpose RC driving, track racing and bashing applications, making it a versatile choice for most UK RC enthusiasts.
- 48 DP Gear Pitch — The 48 DP (diametral pitch) specification ensures this pinion is compatible with all other 48 DP gearing components in your drivetrain. This standardised pitch is widely used across RC vehicles, meaning you'll have no compatibility issues and can easily find matching spur gears.
- 3.17mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — Designed specifically for motors with 3.17mm diameter shafts, this pinion offers a secure fit without wobbling or slipping. The correct shaft diameter ensures optimal power transmission from motor to gearbox, eliminating energy losses that would otherwise reduce acceleration and top speed.
- Ultra-Precise Tooth Shaping — Beyond simply cutting the teeth to the correct size, Corally employs special gear machining techniques to create tooth profiles with ultra-precise shaping. This advanced engineering reduces friction during gear mesh, improves efficiency and extends the lifespan of both this pinion and your spur gear.
- Unparalleled Concentricity — The pinion is engineered to run with exceptional concentricity, meaning the tooth circle is perfectly centred on the shaft bore. Poor concentricity causes runout, vibration and uneven tooth wear; this Corally component eliminates those issues entirely.
- Easy Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with the tooth number (22T) for quick and easy identification. This feature prevents confusion when you're swapping gears or managing multiple pinions, saving time during setup changes and maintenance.
- Short Profile Design — The short profile of this pinion means it takes up minimal axial space in your gearbox assembly. This compact design is essential for vehicles with tight gearbox tolerances and allows more flexibility in drivetrain layout and component arrangement.
- 1.5mm Hex Key Adjustment — The pinion uses a 1.5mm hex key for secure installation and removal. This small hex size is standard across RC cars and means you'll have the correct tool in any basic RC maintenance kit.
Technical Performance
This Corally pinion represents a significant step up in quality compared to standard aftermarket gears commonly found in budget RC car kits. The hardened steel material offers superior durability compared to mild steel alternatives, resisting the tooth stripping and deformation that can occur during aggressive acceleration or when driving on rough surfaces. The CNC machining process ensures each tooth is cut to absolute perfection, with tolerances that allow for smooth, efficient meshing with your spur gear. This precision engineering directly translates to better power transmission efficiency—meaning more of your motor's power reaches the wheels rather than being wasted as friction and vibration in the gearbox. The 48 DP pitch is a versatile standard used across numerous RC car platforms from entry-level vehicles through to competition-grade racing setups, ensuring broad compatibility. At 22 teeth, this pinion sits in the mid-range of the tooth count spectrum; smaller tooth counts (like 19-21T) provide more top speed but less acceleration, whilst larger counts (23-25T) offer quicker acceleration but lower maximum speed. The 22T configuration strikes an excellent balance for mixed-use driving. The 3.17mm shaft diameter fits modern brushless RC motors perfectly, and the 4.00mm tooth width provides sufficient contact area for reliable power transmission. At just 9.00mm in length, the pinion occupies minimal space in your gearbox assembly, making it ideal for compact designs. Built to exacting standards in Europe, this component meets the demands of serious RC enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on quality or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Corally 48 DP Pinion 22T suitable for beginners? — Yes, this pinion is suitable for beginners because it represents a standard, balanced tooth count that works well in the majority of RC car setups. Beginners should not hesitate to invest in quality components like this; doing so will teach good habits and prevent frustration caused by poor-quality gears that strip or wear quickly. The 22T configuration is forgiving and predictable, making it an excellent learning tool.
- What is the difference between this 22T pinion and 19T or 25T alternatives? — The tooth count directly affects your vehicle's gear ratio and therefore its performance characteristics. A 19T pinion provides a taller gear ratio (higher top speed but slower acceleration), whilst a 25T pinion provides a shorter gear ratio (quicker acceleration but lower top speed). The 22T sits in the middle, offering a versatile balance suitable for most driving conditions and track layouts. Your choice should depend on the type of racing you do and the specific characteristics of your track.
- Why is hardened steel better than standard steel for RC pinion gears? — Hardened steel undergoes a heat treatment process that increases its hardness and makes it much more resistant to wear, deformation and tooth stripping. Standard steel is softer and wears faster, especially under the high-impact loads that occur during acceleration and when driving on rough surfaces. Investing in a hardened steel pinion like this Corally component means you'll replace it less frequently and enjoy more reliable performance throughout its lifespan.
- What does CNC cut teeth mean and why should I care? — CNC (computer numerical control) machining uses precision computer-controlled machines to cut the gear teeth to exact specifications. This ensures perfect tooth geometry, proper spacing and optimal contact surfaces. Teeth cut by CNC machines are vastly superior to those produced by cheaper stamping or casting methods, which can result in irregular tooth shapes, poor concentricity and vibration. CNC precision means smoother, quieter operation and better efficiency.
- Will this pinion work with my RC car? — This pinion is compatible with any RC car that uses 48 DP gearing and has a 3.17mm diameter motor shaft. This includes numerous popular models from various manufacturers. Check your vehicle's specifications or contact our team at RC Model Shop if you're unsure about compatibility.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on driving intensity, track conditions and maintenance practices. A hardened steel pinion like this Corally component will last considerably longer than budget alternatives. You should inspect your pinion regularly for signs of wear, chipping or tooth damage. Replace it if you notice performance degradation, unusual noises or visible damage.
- What tools do I need to install this pinion? — Installation requires a 1.5mm hex key for fastening and adjustment, a small socket or spanner to hold the motor shaft steady during installation, and potentially a gear mesh gauge to ensure proper spacing between the pinion and spur gear. Most RC enthusiasts already have these basic tools as part of their maintenance kit.
