Overview

The Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 35 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71335) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and performance from their drivetrain components. Whether you're running a competitive RC buggy, an off-road crawler, or a high-performance race car, this hardened steel pinion gear offers the durability and accuracy needed to handle demanding driving conditions. As part of Corally's extensive range of 64 DP pinions, this 35-tooth variant provides a specific gear ratio option that allows you to fine-tune your RC car's acceleration and top speed characteristics to suit your driving style and track conditions.

Corally has built a reputation for delivering quality aftermarket RC components that enthusiasts trust to perform under pressure. This pinion gear is manufactured to exacting standards using hardened steel, ensuring it can withstand the torque and stress generated by modern brushless motors. The 64 DP (diametral pitch) specification means this gear is compatible with a wide range of RC cars and transmissions that use the same pitch standard, making it an essential upgrade or replacement part for serious hobbyists. Whether you're preparing for a competition, upgrading an existing RC car UK setup, or simply maintaining your fleet of radio-controlled vehicles, having the correct pinion gear is crucial to achieving optimal drivetrain performance.

The 3.17mm shaft diameter is a standard specification found on many popular RC car motors, ensuring broad compatibility with leading brands and models available to UK RC enthusiasts. With 35 teeth, this particular pinion offers a mid-range ratio that strikes a balance between acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for various driving scenarios from casual bashing to competitive racing.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which significantly increases its durability and resistance to wear compared to standard steel alternatives. Hardened steel can withstand higher torque loads and more aggressive driving conditions, ensuring your drivetrain remains reliable through countless charging cycles and competitive racing sessions.
  • 64 DP Specification — The 64 DP (diametral pitch) rating means this pinion is compatible with spur gears and other drivetrain components that share the same pitch standard, allowing you to mix and match components from compatible RC cars and ensuring you have options when building or modifying your setup.
  • 35 Tooth Count — With 35 teeth, this pinion provides a balanced gear ratio that offers a good compromise between motor acceleration response and top speed capability. This tooth count is ideal for drivers who want smooth, controlled performance rather than extreme acceleration or maximum velocity.
  • 3.17mm Shaft Diameter — The 3.17mm shaft diameter is a widely adopted standard in the RC hobby, ensuring compatibility with most modern brushless motors and motor shafts found in popular RC cars available throughout the UK RC market.
  • Short Format Design — The short pinion design is optimised for direct motor engagement with minimal height, helping to maintain a compact drivetrain assembly and allowing for precise gear mesh adjustment in your transmission.
  • Precision Manufacturing — Each pinion is manufactured to close tolerances, ensuring consistent tooth profiles and smooth engagement with your spur gear. This precision minimises noise, vibration, and drivetrain losses, translating to better overall RC car performance.

Technical Performance

The Corally 64 DP Pinion represents a significant step up in drivetrain reliability compared to standard pinion offerings. The hardened steel construction means the material has undergone thermal treatment to increase its hardness and resistance to deformation under load. This is particularly important for brushless RC car applications, where high-powered motors can generate substantial torque spikes that would quickly wear out or strip teeth on softer materials. The 35-tooth configuration on a 64 DP gear provides specific performance characteristics: when meshed with various spur gear sizes, it determines your overall gear ratio, which directly affects acceleration, top speed, and battery efficiency. For example, a smaller spur gear combined with this 35-tooth pinion will emphasise acceleration and low-end torque response, whilst a larger spur gear will allow higher top speeds with less strain on the motor. The 3.17mm shaft diameter ensures compatibility with the vast majority of modern brushless motor designs available in the UK RC hobby market, from entry-level systems to high-performance competition motors. The short format minimises unsprung weight and complexity in the transmission, contributing to better handling characteristics and more responsive steering feedback. Precision manufacturing tolerances mean consistent tooth depth and profile, ensuring smooth, quiet gear mesh that minimises power loss through the drivetrain. This is especially important during competitive racing where every fraction of a second counts, and efficiency directly translates to better battery runtime and performance consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does 64 DP mean and why does it matter? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, a measurement that defines the gear tooth spacing and size. 64 DP gears have smaller teeth than lower DP numbers (like 48 DP), allowing for more precise engineering and smoother operation. All gears in your drivetrain must use the same DP specification to mesh correctly, so choosing the correct 64 DP pinion ensures compatibility with your existing drivetrain components and ensures you can upgrade or replace gears without compatibility issues.
  • Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion will fit any RC car that uses 64 DP gears with a 3.17mm motor shaft. Most modern brushless RC cars, particularly those from leading UK RC manufacturers, use this standard specification. Check your vehicle's manual or contact the manufacturer if you're unsure whether your RC car uses 64 DP gears and a 3.17mm shaft, as using an incompatible pinion could damage your transmission.
  • What is the difference between the different tooth counts in the Corally 64 DP range? — Corally offers this pinion in tooth counts ranging from 17 to 40 teeth. Fewer teeth (like 17T) create a lower gear ratio, emphasising acceleration and torque response but limiting top speed. More teeth (like 40T) create a higher gear ratio, allowing greater top speeds but reducing acceleration and requiring more motor power. The 35-tooth option provides a balanced middle ground suitable for mixed driving conditions.
  • Why is hardened steel better than standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes thermal treatment that increases its hardness and wear resistance. Standard steel pinions will gradually wear down, with teeth becoming rounded or even stripped under high torque loads from brushless motors. Hardened steel pinions maintain their tooth profile far longer, ensuring consistent performance throughout their lifespan and making them a better long-term investment for serious RC hobbyists in the UK.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on driving intensity, motor power, and maintenance. Hardened steel pinions like this Corally offering typically last significantly longer than standard alternatives. However, if you notice teeth becoming rounded, hear grinding noises from the drivetrain, or experience sluggish acceleration, it may be time to replace the pinion. Regular inspection during maintenance intervals helps catch wear early.
  • Can I use this pinion with any motor? — This pinion will fit any motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter. However, ensure your motor's power output is appropriate for your RC car's weight and intended use. Very high-KV, high-power motors may put excessive stress on the drivetrain, whilst very low-power motors may not provide adequate performance. Consult your RC car's specifications or the motor documentation to ensure compatibility.
