Technical Performance
The Corally C-70422 pinion gear represents the absolute pinnacle of drivetrain engineering for competitive RC car racing and high-performance bashing. Constructed from 7075 T6 hard anodised aluminium, this material is typically reserved for aerospace applications where weight, strength, and reliability cannot be compromised. The hard anodising process creates an incredibly durable surface coating that resists wear from constant meshing with spur gears, allowing this component to maintain its performance characteristics even after thousands of gear teeth engagements. The 22-tooth configuration delivers an optimal balance for most 48DP racing setups, providing sufficient acceleration for impressive launch speeds whilst maintaining reasonable top-end velocity across a variety of motor KV ratings. Whether you're running a high-KV brushless motor or a more modest brushed setup, this pinion will integrate seamlessly into your drivetrain. The 4mm teeth width and 9mm overall gear length are precisely engineered to interface perfectly with standard 48DP spur gears, eliminating the gear rattle and chatter that occurs with poorly matched components. Installation is straightforward using the included 1.5mm hex key, though no tools are required for basic fitting. The ultra-precise CNC manufacturing ensures zero runout, which means smooth, efficient power delivery from your motor to the wheels with absolutely no vibration losses. For competitive drivers seeking consistent lap times and reliable performance race after race, this pinion gear is an investment in precision engineering that will pay dividends through improved handling, faster acceleration, and reduced maintenance intervals.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Corally 48 DP Pinion suitable for beginners learning to maintain their RC car? — Yes, this pinion is an excellent choice for beginners because it's a wear item that will eventually need replacement, making it perfect for learning basic drivetrain maintenance. The marked tooth count and standard 3.17mm shaft diameter mean it's impossible to install incorrectly, and the 1.5mm hex key is a standard tool found in most RC toolkits. Once you've replaced a pinion once, you'll have the confidence to do it whenever needed.
- What is the gear ratio when using this 22-tooth pinion with a standard spur gear? — The gear ratio depends entirely on the number of teeth on your spur gear. For example, a 22T pinion paired with a 72T spur gear creates a 3.27:1 ratio, whilst a 22T pinion with an 88T spur creates a 4.0:1 ratio. Consult your car's manufacturer guidelines or speak with RC Model Shop to find the recommended spur-to-pinion ratio for your specific setup and racing conditions.
- Why is hard anodised 7075 aluminium better than standard aluminium for pinion gears? — Standard aluminium is relatively soft and wears quickly under constant meshing with spur gears, particularly in competitive racing where teeth engagement happens thousands of times per lap. The 7075 T6 alloy used in this Corally pinion is significantly harder and stronger, while hard anodising adds an even tougher surface layer that resists wear. This means your pinion will maintain its precise tooth geometry for much longer, translating to consistent performance lap after lap with minimal maintenance.
- How often should I replace this pinion gear? — Pinion life depends on your driving intensity, motor power, and track conditions. Casual weekend bashers might replace a pinion every season, whilst competitive racers may need new gears every few months. Signs of wear include rough operation, excessive noise, or visible tooth damage. Keeping your gear mesh properly adjusted and maintaining good lubrication will extend pinion life significantly.
- What is the difference between a short pinion and a standard pinion? — Short pinions have a narrower teeth width (4mm in this case) and are used in specific gear box designs to maintain proper spacing and meshing angles. Always verify that your gear box is designed for short pinions before purchasing, as using the wrong pinion type can cause binding, excessive wear, or complete drivetrain failure.
- Can I use this pinion with any 48DP spur gear? — Yes, this 22-tooth short pinion is designed to work with any 48DP spur gear that matches your gear box's width specifications. However, always confirm that your chosen spur gear is also a short design if you're using a short pinion to ensure proper meshing and avoid gear binding.
- Is CNC manufacturing important for RC pinion gears? — Absolutely. CNC manufacturing ensures that every tooth is cut to identical specifications with zero runout, which means consistent, vibration-free operation. Hand-cut or poorly machined gears will have slight variations in tooth geometry, leading to vibration, noise, and premature wear. The precision manufacturing in this Corally pinion is what allows it to deliver championship-level performance.
