Technical Performance
The Corally 48 DP Pinion represents a significant investment in your RC car's drivetrain performance and longevity. The choice of 7075 T6 aluminium is particularly noteworthy—this material grade is renowned in aerospace and motorsport applications for its exceptional strength and fatigue resistance, making it ideal for the demanding conditions of RC racing. The hard-anodising process adds a protective oxide layer that increases surface hardness and corrosion resistance, meaning this pinion will maintain its performance characteristics even after extended use and exposure to typical UK weather conditions including moisture and temperature variations. The 18-tooth configuration provides a balanced gear ratio option that works across numerous RC vehicle types and driving styles, from speed-focused setups to more torque-oriented configurations depending on your spur gear selection. The CNC-cut teeth ensure that every tooth maintains identical dimensions and angles, which is crucial for smooth power delivery and minimising vibration that could otherwise cause premature wear to your transmission components. The 4.0mm teeth width and 9.0mm overall gear length are precision-engineered to work seamlessly with standard 48 DP spur gears and transmission housings. At just 1.5mm hex key size for securing to your motor shaft, installation is straightforward, and the compact design means no modifications are needed to your existing RC car setup. This pinion delivers the kind of uncompromising performance that competitive RC drivers expect, with the build quality and material specifications that justify its position as a premium component in the RC performance parts market.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a 48 DP pinion and why does gear pitch matter for RC cars? — DP (diametral pitch) is the standard measurement used to define gear tooth size and spacing. A 48 DP pinion has smaller, more numerous teeth than lower DP gears, which is typical for 1/10 and 1/8 scale RC cars. The gear pitch must match your spur gear and transmission system exactly; mixing different DP gears will cause poor meshing, efficiency loss, and component damage. This 48 DP pinion is compatible with all 48 DP geared vehicles, making it a universal choice for most modern RC cars and buggies in the UK market.
- What does the 18-tooth count mean and how does it affect my RC car's performance? — The tooth count directly determines your vehicle's gear ratio when paired with a specific spur gear. Fewer teeth on the pinion (lower numbers like 18T) combined with more teeth on the spur gear create a higher gear ratio, which increases top speed and reduces torque. An 18-tooth pinion is popular for speed-focused setups and tracks where you need good acceleration and high-speed performance. If you need more torque and lower top speed for technical or tight courses, you'd choose a pinion with more teeth.
- Why is 7075 T6 aluminium better than standard aluminium for RC gears? — 7075 T6 is an aerospace-grade aluminium alloy that's significantly stronger and more durable than standard aluminium or lower-grade alloys. It resists bending, fatigue, and stripping better than alternatives, meaning your pinion will maintain its tooth shape and performance characteristics even under the intense stresses of repeated acceleration and deceleration. The hard-anodising treatment adds an additional protective layer, making this pinion one of the most durable options available for RC cars in the UK.
- Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion is designed for any RC car or buggy that uses a 48 DP gearing system with a 3.17mm motor shaft. The 48 DP specification is standard for most 1/10 and many 1/8 scale RC vehicles. Before purchasing, check your vehicle's documentation or existing pinion to confirm it uses 48 DP gearing and has a 3.17mm motor shaft diameter. If you're unsure, contact the RC Model Shop team, and they'll help you verify compatibility with your specific vehicle.
- How do I install this pinion gear on my RC motor? — Installation is straightforward: loosen the set screw on your motor's pinion collar using a 1.5mm hex key, slide the new pinion onto the 3.17mm motor shaft, position it to mesh correctly with your spur gear (usually with a piece of paper as a feeler gauge), and then tighten the set screw firmly. Make sure the pinion sits flush against the motor shaft collar and that the teeth mesh smoothly with the spur gear without excessive friction or gap. If you're new to RC setup, the team at RC Model Shop can provide guidance.
- What is hard-anodising and why does it matter for an RC pinion? — Hard-anodising is an electrochemical process that creates a thick, hard oxide layer on the aluminium surface. This process increases surface hardness by up to three times compared to standard anodising, provides superior corrosion resistance, and helps the teeth resist wear and stripping. For RC applications, hard-anodising is particularly valuable because it protects against the repetitive stress and friction of thousands of gear meshing cycles, extending the pinion's lifespan significantly compared to untreated or standard-anodised alternatives.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — This is a component-level part designed for users who are comfortable performing drivetrain maintenance and upgrades on their RC cars. If you're completely new to RC vehicles, you might want to start with a ready-to-run RC car and learn the basics before replacing drivetrain components. However, if you already own an RC car and are comfortable with basic maintenance, upgrading to a quality Corally pinion is an excellent way to improve performance and durability. The RC Model Shop team in Walsall can provide assistance if you're unsure about installation.
- How often will I need to replace this pinion? — A quality pinion like this Corally component should last many months or even years of regular use, depending on your driving style and maintenance. Hard-anodised 7075 T6 aluminium is extremely durable and resists wear effectively. You'll know it's time for replacement if you notice reduced acceleration response, unusual grinding sounds during operation, or visible damage to the teeth. Regular inspection and proper meshing adjustment will maximise the lifespan of your pinion.
- Can I use this pinion with any spur gear? — You must use this pinion only with spur gears that also feature 48 DP tooth pitch. The spur gear's tooth size must match the pinion's tooth size for smooth, efficient meshing. However, you can pair this 18-tooth pinion with various spur gear tooth counts (commonly 70T, 76T, 83T, etc.) to achieve different overall gear ratios that suit different track conditions and driving preferences. Always verify that both the pinion and spur gear share the same DP specification.
