Overview
The TEAM ASSOCIATED FT 12mm V2 Shock Pistons represent a significant tuning advancement for serious RC off-road enthusiasts across the UK. Factory Team has introduced these precision-engineered shock pistons as a specialised upgrade option for 12mm shock systems, providing racers and weekend drivers alike with a new level of suspension control and handling refinement. Whether you're competing on low-traction dirt tracks, tackling high-grip surfaces with technical bumps, or simply looking to improve your RC car's overall driveability, these 2mm thickness V2 pistons offer a compelling alternative to standard kit components. For anyone serious about RC car tuning in the UK, understanding shock piston selection is fundamental to extracting maximum performance from your setup.
These Factory Team shock pistons are engineered to decrease damping and pack compared to the standard 2.5mm thickness kit counterparts that come fitted to most current Team Associated vehicles. By reducing the thickness from 2.5mm to 2mm whilst maintaining the same proven 2-hole valving design, Factory Team has created a piston that allows faster fluid flow through the shock, resulting in less pack during fast impacts from jumps and bumps. This engineering approach gives your RC buggy, truck or short course racer a more forgiving feel, increased traction, and a calmer, more drivable response that transforms how your vehicle behaves across varying track conditions. The V2 designation confirms this is an optimised iteration, incorporating Factory Team's latest design philosophy for competitive and recreational RC enthusiasts.
If you're running lightweight LCG batteries on your RC10B, RC10T or RC10SC platform, or if you're experimenting with different suspension setups to find your perfect tune, these shock pistons are an essential addition to your spares collection. At RC Model Shop, we stock genuine Associated Factory Team components at competitive UK prices, with fast same-day shipping available on most orders. Whether you're preparing for club races, weekend bashing sessions, or serious competitive racing, investing in quality shock tuning components like these will elevate your RC experience.
Key Features
- 2mm V2 Piston Thickness — The thinner 2mm design compared to standard 2.5mm kit pistons allows shock fluid to flow faster through the piston, reducing pack and damping forces during impacts, which translates to smoother performance over bumps and a more forgiving driving feel.
- 2-Hole 1.5mm Valving — The precision 2-hole valving configuration with 1.5mm diameter holes maintains the proven Factory Team shock tuning philosophy, delivering consistent and predictable damping characteristics across different track conditions and driving styles.
- Decreased Pack and Damping — By reducing piston thickness, these components decrease the rate of resistance (pack) compared to 2.5mm pistons, resulting in a shock that absorbs impacts more smoothly and provides better bump handling for both jumps and high-grip track surfaces with technical features.
- Improved Traction and Handling — The reduced pack and smoother suspension response give your RC car improved traction, particularly on low-traction dirt tracks, whilst the calmer damping response makes the vehicle easier to drive and more predictable through technical sections.
- Lightweight LCG Battery Compatibility — These pistons are specifically recommended for vehicles running lightweight lower centre of gravity batteries, as they prevent the car from becoming over-damped and help maintain responsive, drivable handling characteristics with reduced overall weight.
- Flexible Tuning Platform — By increasing shock oil viscosity by approximately 2.5 to 5 weight units (for example, stepping from 30wt to 32.5–35wt), you can run these 2mm pistons whilst maintaining stable bump handling, providing significant tuning flexibility without compromising suspension performance.
- Factory Team Quality and Engineering — These pistons are manufactured by Factory Team, the competition and performance division of Associated Electrics, ensuring precision engineering, consistent quality, and compatibility with the latest RC vehicle platforms from the manufacturer.
- Direct Comparison Baseline — Current Team Associated kit vehicles include 2.5mm thickness 2-hole pistons as standard, providing an ideal baseline for racers and enthusiasts to compare and evaluate the performance difference that these lighter V2 pistons deliver in their specific racing conditions.
Technical Performance
The TEAM ASSOCIATED FT 12mm V2 Shock Pistons are engineered with precision tolerances to deliver consistent performance across the full range of Factory Team 12mm shock systems fitted to modern Team Associated RC vehicles. The 2mm piston thickness represents careful engineering optimisation, reducing the overall volume of fluid displacement compared to standard 2.5mm pistons whilst the 2-hole 1.5mm valving maintains excellent flow characteristics and predictable damping curves. This combination allows shock fluid to pass through the piston more freely during compression and extension, particularly during fast impacts from jumps and bumps, resulting in a lower overall pack or resistance rate. The reduction in pack is especially valuable when operating on technical tracks with significant bumps or when you need a more forgiving feel from your suspension. The V2 designation indicates these are an evolved design, benefiting from Factory Team's continuous development programme and feedback from competitive racing environments. When paired with appropriately viscous shock oil (Team Associated recommends increasing oil weight by 2.5wt to 5wt, for example changing from 30wt to 32.5wt or 35wt), these pistons maintain excellent stability and bump absorption whilst delivering the reduced pack characteristic that defines their performance envelope. These shock pistons are compatible with Factory Team 12mm shock systems fitted to RC10B74.1, RC10B74.1D, RC10B6.2, RC10B6.2D, RC10T6.2, RC10SC6.2 and older RC10B6 series RC car models.

When to Use These Pistons
- Low-traction Dirt Tracks — Install these 2mm pistons when racing on low-grip dirt surfaces where you need maximum traction and a more forgiving suspension response that helps your RC car maintain contact and grip through corners and over obstacles.
- High-traction Tracks with Bumps — Use these pistons on high-grip asphalt or tight tracks featuring technical bumps and kerbs, where reduced pack and smoother damping prevents your suspension from becoming stiff and harsh, instead allowing the car to flow over terrain more naturally.
- Lightweight LCG Battery Setups — When running your RC vehicle with lighter lower centre of gravity battery packs, these 2mm pistons prevent over-damping and keep your chassis responsive and easy to drive, maintaining predictable handling characteristics despite the reduced vehicle weight.
- Slower Responsiveness Requirements — If you prefer a calmer, less twitchy suspension response that's easier to manage and provides more forgiveness, these 2mm thickness pistons deliver exactly that characteristic compared to standard 2.5mm kit pistons.
- Better Bump Handling Preference — Select these pistons specifically when bump absorption and smooth suspension action is your priority, as the reduced piston thickness and resulting faster fluid flow delivers noticeably better performance over rough terrain.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between 2mm and 2.5mm shock pistons? — The 2mm V2 pistons are thinner than standard 2.5mm kit pistons, allowing shock fluid to flow faster through the component. This reduces pack (resistance rate) and damping forces, resulting in a smoother, more forgiving suspension response, particularly over bumps and during fast impacts from jumps. Standard 2.5mm pistons provide more pack, higher responsiveness and a firmer feel, making them suitable for different track conditions and driving preferences.
- Will these pistons work with my Team Associated RC car? — These FT 12mm V2 Shock Pistons are compatible with Factory Team 12mm shock systems fitted to RC10B74.1, RC10B74.1D, RC10B6.2, RC10B6.2D, RC10T6.2, RC10SC6.2 and older RC10B6 series models. Check your vehicle documentation or contact our team to confirm your specific model compatibility before ordering.
- What shock oil should I use with these 2mm pistons? — Factory Team recommends increasing your shock oil viscosity by approximately 2.5 to 5 weight units when switching to these 2mm pistons. For example, if you're currently running 30wt shock oil, step up to 32.5wt or 35wt. This higher viscosity compensates for the reduced piston thickness and maintains stable bump handling whilst preserving the benefits of reduced pack.
- Are these pistons suitable for beginners? — These are intermediate to advanced tuning components designed for racers and enthusiasts with existing knowledge of shock setup and suspension tuning. Beginners should start with standard kit pistons and gradually explore tuning options like these as they develop their setup knowledge and racing experience.
- What performance improvement should I expect? — You should notice smoother suspension action over bumps, reduced harshness during impacts from jumps, and a more forgiving overall feel. Traction may improve on low-grip tracks, and your RC car should be easier to drive and more predictable, particularly when running lightweight battery setups or on technical high-grip tracks with bumps.
- Can I run these pistons on standard kit shock oil? — Whilst possible, Factory Team specifically recommends increasing oil viscosity by 2.5 to 5 weight units when using these 2mm pistons. Running them with standard thinner oil may result in insufficient damping and unstable bump handling, so adjusting your shock oil viscosity upwards is an important part of proper tuning.
- How do these compare to my standard kit pistons? — Current Team Associated kits include 2.5mm thickness 2-hole pistons as standard. These FT 12mm V2 2mm pistons provide noticeably less pack, reduced damping, smoother bump absorption and a more forgiving feel, whilst standard kit pistons offer more pack and higher responsiveness for different track conditions and driver preferences.
