Technical Performance

The Associated AS91637 represents professional-grade suspension engineering designed specifically for high-performance RC racing applications. The 12mm big bore shock system delivers superior performance characteristics compared to standard shock setups, with the larger bore diameter providing more effective damping and better heat dissipation during extended running sessions. The 54mm length specification is critical to maintaining proper ride height geometry and suspension travel, which directly impacts the vehicle's centre of gravity, weight transfer characteristics, and overall handling balance. The 4.45 lb spring rate sits in the medium range of the suspension tuning spectrum, making it suitable for a variety of track conditions and driving styles whilst maintaining excellent bump compliance and stability under acceleration and braking. The spring is constructed from high-quality steel alloy materials engineered to withstand the demanding loads experienced during competitive RC racing, including repeated compression cycles, high-speed impacts and extreme suspension articulation. This component is fully compatible with all Associated vehicles specified in the fitment list, including the RC10SC5M short course truck, RC10T4.2 touring buggy, and RC10T5M competition buggy, making it an essential upgrade for anyone running these popular competition vehicles. The engineering and manufacturing standards applied to this spring ensure consistent performance characteristics throughout its service life, critical for maintaining predictable handling and competitive lap times.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a big bore shock and why does it matter for my RC car? — Big bore shocks feature a larger diameter cylinder (12mm in this case) compared to standard shocks, which provides superior damping oil volume, better heat dissipation, more consistent performance throughout extended running sessions, and improved suspension compliance over rough terrain. For competitive RC racing in the UK, big bore shocks are the professional standard because they deliver more predictable and consistent handling characteristics lap after lap, which is essential for competitive success.
  • How do I know if the 4.45Lb spring rate is right for my setup? — Spring rate selection depends on several factors including track surface (carpet versus concrete), driving style, vehicle weight, desired ride height and personal preference. The 4.45Lb rate is a medium-stiffness option suitable for most track conditions and driving styles. Many racers keep multiple spring rates on hand and swap them during testing to dial in the perfect setup. RC Model Shop staff can advise on spring rate selection based on your specific vehicle and racing conditions.
  • Will this spring fit my Associated RC car? — The AS91637 is compatible with all Associated vehicles that feature 12mm big bore shock bodies, including the RC10SC5M, RC10T4.2, RC10T5M and many other Associated models. Check your vehicle's shock specifications before ordering, or contact RC Model Shop and our experienced team can confirm fitment for your specific model.
  • How often should I replace my suspension springs? — Springs don't wear out like dampers do, but they can lose tension over extended use spanning months or years. If you notice your vehicle sitting lower than usual or handling inconsistently, spring replacement is a good maintenance step. Springs may also need replacement if they become bent or damaged through impacts or crashes.
  • Is this a complete shock replacement or just the spring? — This is just the spring component. You'll need a complete 12mm big bore shock body, damper, piston and seals to assemble a full shock unit. If you need a complete shock assembly, RC Model Shop can advise on compatible options.
  • Can I use different spring rates on the front and rear of my RC car? — Yes, and this is actually common practice in RC racing. Using slightly different spring rates front and rear allows you to fine-tune weight distribution, handling balance and turn-in characteristics to match specific track conditions and driving preferences. Professional racers often carry multiple spring rates for testing and tuning.
