Overview
The Team Associated RC8B4.1 Aluminium Front Shock Tower with 16° KPI is a precision-engineered suspension component designed for the championship-winning RC8B4.1 1/8 scale nitro buggy. This aluminium shock tower represents the latest evolution in Team Associated's front-end geometry, featuring a 16-degree Kingpin Inclination (KPI) specification that delivers enhanced steering response and improved handling characteristics on challenging outdoor terrain. Whether you're a competitive racer seeking marginal gains or an enthusiast looking to fine-tune your RC car UK setup, this factory-quality component offers the durability and performance expected from a brand synonymous with IFMAR World Championship success.
The RC8B4.1 platform builds upon the proven RC8B4 design with comprehensive suspension improvements aimed at lowering the centre of gravity and reducing overall weight whilst maintaining predictable high-speed handling. The new front shock tower design works in harmony with shorter 16mm shock bodies, allowing drivers to run softer suspension packages that absorb track imperfections whilst maintaining essential support through fast turns. This component is an essential part of the modern RC buggy UK landscape, where outdoor track conditions demand both agility and stability.
Available as an option part for RC8B4.1 competitors and enthusiasts, this aluminium front shock tower showcases Team Associated's commitment to modular design, allowing drivers to select geometry options that suit their specific track conditions and driving preferences. The 16° KPI variant represents a geometry choice distinct from the standard 8° offering, providing alternative handling characteristics for setups that demand additional steering response.
Key Features
- Aluminium Construction — Manufactured from lightweight yet rigid aluminium, this shock tower provides exceptional strength-to-weight ratio that contributes to the RC8B4.1's lower centre of gravity whilst maintaining the structural integrity required for high-speed racing and rough terrain.
- 16° Kingpin Inclination (KPI) — The 16° KPI specification is specifically engineered to modify the vehicle's steering geometry, offering alternative handling characteristics compared to the standard 8° configuration and allowing drivers to optimise their setup for specific track layouts and grip levels.
- Low Centre of Gravity Design — This component is part of Team Associated's deliberate chassis engineering to lower the CG, which directly improves handling consistency, reduces weight transfer during cornering, and enhances overall vehicle stability on un-groomed outdoor tracks.
- Compatible with 16mm Shock Bodies — Designed to work with the new 16mm front and rear shock bodies featured in the RC8B4.1, allowing integration of shorter shock units that contribute to the lower overall chassis profile and lighter weight distribution.
- Factory Team Quality — This is a genuine Team Associated Factory Team part (part number AS81676), manufactured to the same precision standards used in professional racing setups and backed by the brand's reputation for championship-grade engineering.
- Option Part Flexibility — Available as an optional upgrade, this shock tower allows drivers to customise their RC8B4.1 suspension geometry without requiring complete chassis replacement, making it an economical way to explore different handling characteristics.
Technical Performance
The RC8B4.1 Aluminium Front Shock Tower with 16° KPI represents sophisticated suspension engineering developed through Team Associated's professional racing programme. Built from aluminium with precision tolerances, this component weighs significantly less than older designs whilst offering superior rigidity compared to composite alternatives. The 16° KPI specification fundamentally alters the vehicle's steering axis inclination angle, changing how the wheels respond to steering inputs and how the suspension geometry reacts during cornering and braking. When paired with the RC8B4.1's innovative pivot ball front suspension geometry, which improves steering balance and provides predictable handling in all conditions, this shock tower enables drivers to exploit the buggy's full potential. The component integrates seamlessly with the 8-degree steering blocks (which feature a wider upper suspension arm pivot for increased stability) and the updated front end geometry that features an aluminium steering rack designed for lightweight durability. The 26.5mm shock body compatibility means this tower accepts the new shorter shock units with 6-hole 1.4mm front machined shock pistons, allowing teams to fine-tune spring rates and damping characteristics without sacrificing essential support in fast turns. The stiffened tapered chassis profile of the RC8B4.1 works synergistically with this low-CG shock tower design, creating a platform that delivers predictable high-speed handling whether you're racing competitively or enjoying track days.

What You Need to Complete
This is an option part for the RC8B4.1. To integrate it into a complete buggy setup, you will need a compatible RC8B4.1 chassis and suspension system, including 16mm shock bodies, shock pistons, and the appropriate suspension arms and pivot points. If you are building a complete RC8B4.1 from the Team Kit, you will require a .21 class rear exhaust engine, exhaust system (muffler and header joining pack or muffler spring), 2- or 3-channel 2.4GHz radio transmitter with receiver, transmitter batteries, receiver battery (4.8–7.4V NiMH, LiPo, or LiFe options), fuel bottle, glow igniter, starter box, model car fuel (20–30% nitro recommended), 1/8 scale buggy tyres and wheels, CA glue, polycarbonate-specific paint, thread-locking compound, various hand tools (needle-nose pliers, hobby knife, ride height gauge), and steering and throttle servos.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is KPI and how does it affect RC buggy handling? — KPI (Kingpin Inclination) is the angle of the steering axis relative to vertical. The 16° KPI specification on this shock tower modifies the vehicle's steering geometry, changing how steering inputs translate to wheel movement and how suspension geometry reacts during cornering. A higher KPI angle typically increases steering response and can improve handling feel on certain track conditions, making this component a valuable tuning option for competitive drivers seeking to optimise their setup.
- Is this shock tower suitable for beginners? — This is an advanced suspension component designed for experienced builders and competitive racers who understand RC buggy geometry and tuning principles. The RC8B4.1 itself is a professional-grade race kit requiring full assembly and technical knowledge, so this part is best suited to those with previous RC building and racing experience or those willing to learn with guidance from experienced enthusiasts.
- What is the difference between the 16° KPI and 8° shock tower options? — The primary difference is the Kingpin Inclination angle, which affects steering axis geometry. The 16° KPI version offers alternative handling characteristics compared to the standard 8° configuration, providing increased steering response and different suspension geometry behaviour. Drivers choose between these options based on track conditions and personal preference, with the 16° option generally providing sharper steering feel.
- Can I switch between different KPI configurations on my RC8B4.1? — Yes, because the RC8B4.1 uses modular suspension design, you can swap between the 8° and 16° KPI shock towers depending on track layout and grip levels. This flexibility is one of the advantages of the RC8B4.1 platform, allowing competitive teams to quickly adapt their geometry without major component replacement.
- What shock body size does this tower accept? — This 26.5mm variant is designed for the new 16mm diameter shock bodies featured in the RC8B4.1, which offer lower centre of gravity and lighter weight compared to older designs. It accommodates 16x26.5mm shock bodies equipped with the 6-hole 1.4mm machined shock pistons.
- Where can I find setup sheets and tuning guides for the RC8B4.1 with this component? — Team Associated publishes official setup sheets from professional drivers racing the RC8B4.1 on various track types (indoor dirt, outdoor oiled surfaces, dusty terrain, etc.), available through RC retailers and team websites. These setups demonstrate different suspension geometry options including shock tower choices.
