Overview

The Team Associated 16mm Rear Springs in white are precision-engineered suspension components designed specifically for 1/8 scale RC buggies, particularly the RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e models. These rear springs represent the latest advancement in Team Associated's ongoing development programme, engineered to deliver superior handling on ungroomed, low-grip track surfaces where traction is at a premium. Whether you're competing at DNC, Silver State, or tackling bumpy terrain at your local RC track in the UK, these springs offer the fine-tuning capability serious RC enthusiasts demand.

Team Associated engineers identified a critical gap in their suspension lineup when testing current 1.6mm wire springs on ungroomed tracks. Whilst these springs performed excellently on high-grip, well-prepared surfaces, they struggled to maintain consistent grip and predictable handling on rough, low-traction terrain. This led to the development of an entirely new 1.5mm wire diameter spring range, fundamentally redesigned to change the spring's natural frequency and stress characteristics. By moving from 1.6mm to 1.5mm wire, these rear springs can compress and conform more readily to bumpy surfaces, providing the compliance and traction control you need when grip levels are challenging.

These white-coloured 16mm rear springs are part of a complete suspension tuning ecosystem, working in harmony with complementary front and rear spring options. With a stiffness rating of 3.75 lb/in and a free length of 83mm, they're optimised for the lower RC8B4.1 shock towers introduced in recent model updates. For RC enthusiasts serious about fine-tuning their 1/8 scale buggy setup, these springs offer an essential advantage on competitive circuits.

Key Features

  • 1.5mm Wire Diameter (1.5D) — These springs utilise a thinner 1.5mm wire compared to the older 1.6mm standard, changing the natural frequency and stress distribution across the wire to allow the spring to compress more easily and conform better to uneven track surfaces found on ungroomed layouts.
  • 3.75 lb/in Spring Rate — The softer spring rate delivers improved traction and bump absorption on low-grip surfaces, part of a new range developed specifically to handle challenging terrain where stiffer springs would lose contact and compromise handling consistency.
  • 83mm Free Length (L83) — Shortened from the previous 86mm standard, this reduced length optimises fitment with the new lower RC8B4.1 shock tower design whilst maintaining the suspension geometry needed for precise handling on bumpy terrain.
  • 9.75 Coil Turn (9.75T) — The precise coil configuration contributes to the spring's targeted natural frequency, ensuring predictable compliance and progressive compression characteristics across the full suspension travel.
  • Dual-End Colour Marking — Each spring is colour-marked on both ends (white in this case), making it instantly identifiable and distinguishable from 1.6mm wire springs which feature colour marking on one end only, preventing accidental mix-ups during setup and tuning.
  • Tightly Grouped Coil Variation — All springs in this lineup are manufactured with incredibly tight tolerances, featuring just 0.25 coil variation between samples, allowing you to fine-tune your setup with precision by swapping springs to match changing grip levels throughout a race day.
  • Ungroomed Track Optimisation — These springs are engineered specifically for the low-grip, bumpy surfaces encountered at competitive events like DNC and Silver State, where standard springs fail to deliver consistent traction and predictable handling characteristics.
  • 16mm Shock Compatibility — Designed to fit all 16mm shock absorber systems on RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4, and older Team Associated models, making them a drop-in upgrade for existing setups without requiring shock replacement.

Technical Performance

The development philosophy behind these 1.5D springs reflects Team Associated's commitment to performance on real-world racing surfaces. During extensive testing for the RC8B4.1 platform, the engineering team recognised that whilst 1.6mm wire springs excelled on high-grip, well-groomed asphalt circuits, they exhibited poor conformability on rough, ungroomed terrain. The stress placed on stiffer springs causes them to remain partially extended rather than following the track surface, creating momentary loss of contact with resulting handling inconsistency. By reducing wire diameter to 1.5mm, Team Associated engineers fundamentally altered the stress distribution and natural frequency of the spring, allowing it to compress more gradually and conform to surface irregularities. This engineering approach is coupled with softer spring rates (this model is rated at 3.75 lb/in, with the range extending from 3.40 to 3.75 lb/in for rear springs) that work in concert with the thinner wire to deliver superior traction and bump absorption on challenging terrain. The 83mm free length represents an optimisation for the lower RC8B4.1 shock towers, reducing the overall height of the suspension assembly whilst maintaining suspension travel and compliance. Manufactured with exceptional quality control standards, each spring is tightly grouped with only 0.25 coil variation, allowing competitive racers to fine-tune their setups incrementally as track conditions change throughout a race day. These springs represent a significant leap forward in 1/8 scale RC suspension technology for drivers serious about maximising performance on ungroomed, low-grip racing surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are these rear springs suitable for groomed, high-grip track surfaces? — Whilst these springs will function on any track surface, they are specifically engineered for ungroomed, low-grip terrain. If you primarily race on high-grip, well-prepared surfaces, the softer 3.75 lb/in rate may feel too compliant, and you might prefer stiffer spring options. For maximum versatility across varying track conditions encountered at competitive RC tracks in the UK, it's worth having multiple spring rates available.
  • Will these springs fit my RC8B4 or older Team Associated models? — Yes, these 16mm rear springs are fully compatible with 16mm shock systems on RC8B4, RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, and older Team Associated models. However, the 83mm free length was optimised for the newer lower shock tower design, so fitment geometry on significantly older platforms may differ slightly, though they will function correctly.
  • How do the 1.5mm (1.5D) springs differ from older 1.6mm (1.6D) springs? — The thinner 1.5mm wire diameter changes the spring's natural frequency and stress characteristics, allowing it to compress more easily and conform better to bumpy, low-grip surfaces. The thinner wire is also marked with colour on both ends (rather than one end on 1.6D springs), making identification instant and preventing accidental mixing during setup and maintenance.
  • What spring rates are available in the 1.5D rear spring lineup? — Team Associated offers 1.5D rear springs in rates ranging from 3.40 lb/in through to 3.75 lb/in, with the 3.75 lb/in white spring (this product) positioned at the softer end of the range. This allows competitive drivers to fine-tune their suspension setup with 0.25 lb/in increments to match specific track conditions and grip levels.
  • Can I mix different spring rates on the front and rear? — Absolutely. RC suspension tuning is all about balance and matching your setup to specific track conditions. You can use these 1.5D rear springs at any rate alongside different spring rates on the front, allowing complete flexibility in dial-in your chassis. Team Associated offers complementary 1.5D front springs in rates from 4.45 to 5.05 lb/in.
  • Are these springs suitable for beginners? — Spring selection is more relevant to intermediate and advanced racers who are actively tuning their setups. Beginners typically run with kit-standard springs. However, if you're upgrading your RC8B4.1 and need replacement springs, these represent excellent quality and will serve you well regardless of skill level.
