Overview
The Associated RC8B3.1/RC8B3.2 FT Graphite Rear Shock Tower – Tall (AS81422) is a precision-engineered suspension upgrade designed for competitive RC buggy racers and serious hobbyists across the UK who demand maximum performance from their off-road RC cars. This Factory Team component represents the cutting edge of suspension geometry innovation, developed by Area 51 engineers at Associated Electronics to optimise handling characteristics across a wide range of track conditions and driving styles. Whether you're competing in regional championships or simply pushing your RC buggy to its limits at the weekend, this tall rear shock tower delivers measurable improvements in bump absorption and cornering stability.
This upgrade is particularly valuable for RC enthusiasts running 1/10 scale buggies who want to fine-tune their suspension setup without replacing the entire chassis. The graphite construction provides excellent durability whilst maintaining the lightweight properties essential for competitive RC racing in the UK. By raising the top shock mounting positions compared to the standard tower, Associated engineers have created a taller tower geometry that fundamentally changes how your suspension behaves, allowing your tyres to maintain better contact with uneven terrain and improving overall vehicle composure during aggressive driving.
Compatible with both the RC8B3.1 and RC8B3.2 platforms, as well as their electronic variants (RC8B3.1e and RC8B3.2e), this shock tower represents an investment in proven performance. The part integrates seamlessly with your existing RC car setup, requiring no modifications to the chassis or other components.
Key Features
- Taller Tower Geometry with Raised Shock Mounting Positions — The most significant benefit of this component is the increased vertical distance between the upper and lower shock mounting points. This taller geometry allows the shock absorber to continue its stroke even after the chassis has bottomed out against the ground, meaning the suspension can compress further and absorb impacts more effectively. For RC car owners in the UK competing in local races or bashing in rough terrain, this translates directly to better bump handling and a more composed vehicle on uneven surfaces.
- Optimised Up-Travel for Enhanced Impact Absorption — Up-travel refers to how far the shock can travel upward in its stroke after the chassis contacts the ground. By increasing available up-travel through the raised mounting positions, this shock tower allows your tyres to absorb significantly more impact energy. This is crucial when racing RC buggies at high speed or driving over rough, rocky terrain, as it prevents the suspension from topping out and losing contact with the ground, which would compromise traction and handling.
- Improved Bump Handling and High-Speed Cornering Performance — The engineering improvements in this tower geometry directly enhance how your RC buggy performs when navigating bumpy tracks or maintaining speed through corners. With better suspension compliance, the chassis stays flatter during cornering, reducing body roll and allowing the tyres to maintain consistent grip. This results in faster lap times for competitive RC racing and more enjoyable, controllable driving for recreational users.
- Factory Team Graphite Construction — Manufactured from high-quality graphite material, this shock tower combines lightweight properties with excellent rigidity. Graphite provides the strength needed to handle the forces generated by modern brushless RC motors whilst keeping overall vehicle weight down, which is essential for maintaining the speed and acceleration characteristics of your RC buggy. The material choice also ensures durability through countless heat cycles and impacts typical of competitive RC racing.
- Engineered by Area 51 for Balanced Performance — This component has been developed and tested extensively by Area 51 engineers, Associated Electronics' factory race team. The shock mounting locations have been raised by a specific, calculated amount to optimise up-travel for both low and high axle positions. This means the tower delivers consistent, predictable performance whether you're running a lower or higher ride height setup, giving you flexibility in chassis configuration without sacrificing handling characteristics.
- Compatible Across Multiple RC8B3 Variants — Whether you own an RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8B3.2, or RC8B3.2e, this shock tower fits your vehicle. This broad compatibility makes it an excellent upgrade choice for users with these popular Associated race buggies, and it's a worthwhile investment if you're considering upgrading your RC car in the future.
Technical Performance
The Associated RC8B3.1/RC8B3.2 FT Graphite Rear Shock Tower – Tall represents a significant engineering achievement in RC suspension design. Constructed from premium graphite material, the component provides the rigidity necessary to maintain precise geometry under the extreme forces generated by modern 1/10 scale RC buggies whilst remaining lightweight enough to avoid negatively impacting overall vehicle performance. The raised shock mounting positions create a taller tower that fundamentally improves suspension kinematics, allowing the shock absorber to utilise more of its available stroke length for upward travel after the chassis bottoms out. This is particularly important when driving RC cars at high speed or over rough terrain, as it prevents the suspension from reaching its limit and causing the vehicle to become unsettled. Area 51 engineers optimised the specific height increase and mounting location through extensive testing on both low and high axle position setups, ensuring balanced performance across different configuration options. The graphite material offers excellent dimensional stability and resistance to the heat cycles experienced during competitive RC racing, maintaining consistent performance lap after lap. For RC enthusiasts in the UK looking to extract maximum performance from their RC8B3 platform buggy, this shock tower upgrade delivers measurable improvements in handling without requiring complete suspension overhaul or extensive chassis modifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will this rear shock tower fit my Associated RC buggy? — This shock tower is designed specifically for the RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8B3.2, and RC8B3.2e models. If you own one of these Associated RC buggies, this component will fit directly. It's always recommended to check your vehicle documentation or contact our support team if you're unsure about compatibility with your specific setup.
- What does up-travel mean, and why is it important for my RC car? — Up-travel is the distance the shock can compress upward after the chassis has bottomed out and made contact with the ground. A taller shock tower increases available up-travel, which means your suspension can absorb more impact energy from bumps and rough terrain. This improvement is particularly noticeable when racing RC buggies at high speed or driving over uneven surfaces, as it helps maintain tyre contact with the ground and improves overall vehicle stability and handling.
- How does increasing shock tower height improve handling in corners? — By increasing up-travel through a taller tower geometry, the suspension becomes more compliant and better able to absorb impacts whilst cornering. This allows the chassis to remain flatter during turns, reducing body roll and enabling the tyres to maintain more consistent contact with the racing surface. The result is improved grip, faster cornering speeds, and more predictable handling characteristics for your RC car.
- Is this suitable for both competitive racing and casual bashing? — Absolutely. Whilst the Associated RC8B3 series is primarily designed for competitive racing, this shock tower upgrade benefits any driving style. Competitive racers will appreciate the lap time improvements and handling refinement, whilst casual RC enthusiasts will notice better bump absorption and more enjoyable driving on rough terrain. The upgrade is worthwhile for anyone looking to improve their RC buggy's performance.
- What is the difference between the tall and standard shock tower options? — The key difference is the height of the shock tower and consequently the available up-travel. This tall version raises the upper shock mounting positions compared to the standard tower, creating a taller geometry that increases up-travel. This results in better bump handling, improved high-speed cornering, and more suspension compliance. The tall version is the newer design optimised by Area 51 engineers for balanced performance across different axle height configurations.
- Can I run both low and high axle positions with this tall shock tower? — Yes, this is one of the key advantages of this design. Area 51 engineers specifically optimised the mounting location and height increase to deliver balanced, predictable up-travel performance with both low and high axle positions. This gives you configuration flexibility without sacrificing handling characteristics.
- Do I need any additional parts to install this shock tower? — This is a direct bolt-on replacement or upgrade component. Assuming your RC8B3 is already complete with shocks installed, you simply need to remove your existing shock tower and install this new one. Your existing shocks will transfer directly to the new tower. No other parts or modifications are required.
