Whether you're a weekend racer, a competition driver, or an RC car UK enthusiast looking to optimise your buggy's performance, these shock pistons represent a worthwhile upgrade to your suspension tuning arsenal.
Key Features
- Tapered design — The tapered piston geometry creates varying resistance depending on direction, delivering less resistance when the shaft travels in the taper angle direction, which means less resistance in rebound and more resistance during compression when the taper angle is set downward, making these pistons ideal for rough surface driving where suspension compliance and controlled rebound are essential.
- 5x1.3mm hole configuration — This specific hole pattern is engineered for the RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e and their equivalent models, providing the precise damping characteristics these platforms require, with the option to further customise by drilling holes to larger diameters for additional tuning flexibility.
- Premium Delrin construction — Machined from high-quality Delrin, an engineering polymer recognised for its excellent durability, consistent performance and resistance to the wear and tear of competitive RC racing, ensuring reliable performance across extended racing sessions.
- Factory Team quality — These are official Team Associated FT (Factory Team) components, meaning they meet the same exacting standards used by Team Associated's competition drivers and engineers, delivering the kind of precision tuning experienced racers expect.
- Advanced suspension tuning — By providing tapered piston options alongside flat alternatives, Team Associated enables drivers to fine-tune their suspension settings for specific track conditions, with the ability to further modify hole diameters for even more tuning options.
- Pack of four pistons — The four-pack provides enough pistons to setup your RC8B3 or RC8T3 buggy's front and rear shocks or maintain spares for competition use, with part number AS81206 for easy identification and reordering.
- Compatibility with 16mm shock bodies — These pistons fit 16mm shock bodies across the RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e, RC8T3.2, RC8T3.2e and other compatible 1/8 scale vehicles, ensuring broad compatibility within the Team Associated ecosystem.
Technical Performance
The Team Associated RC8B3 FT 16mm Shock Piston 5x1.3mm Tapered (4) represents precision engineering at its finest for 1/8 scale RC buggy suspension systems. These pistons are engineered with a tapered profile that fundamentally changes how your shocks behave compared to flat pistons. Where flat pistons deliver equal compression and rebound characteristics ideal for smoother surfaces, tapered pistons operate on a different principle entirely. The taper angle creates directional resistance variation, meaning when set downward, the piston experiences less resistance during rebound and more resistance during compression. This engineering approach makes tapered pistons substantially more effective on rough, unpredictable terrain where suspension compliance becomes the difference between maintaining control and losing grip. The 5x1.3mm hole configuration is specifically matched to the RC8B3.2 and RC8B3.2e front shock requirement, engineered by Team Associated's technical team to deliver optimal damping curves for these platforms. Machined from Delrin, a material selected across the entire professional RC industry for its combination of consistent performance, dimensional stability and durability under the intense pressures generated by compression and rebound cycles, these pistons maintain their performance characteristics through extended racing sessions without degradation. The four-piston pack provides sufficient coverage for full vehicle setup or spares maintenance, ensuring you're always prepared for competition use. For drivers seeking even finer tuning precision, Team Associated engineers note in their pro setup tips that the piston holes can be drilled to larger diameters for additional damping adjustment, transforming these already versatile pistons into a complete suspension tuning platform. This level of fine-tuning capability is typical of competition-grade RC components and reflects the engineering standards Team Associated applies across their Factory Team product line.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between tapered and flat shock pistons for RC cars? — Flat pistons provide equal compression and rebound resistance, making them ideal for smoother track surfaces where consistent damping is required. Tapered pistons, like this AS81206 model, create directional resistance variation where the shaft experiences less resistance when travelling in the taper angle direction. When set downward, tapered pistons deliver less rebound resistance and more compression resistance, making them substantially more effective on rough, uneven terrain where suspension compliance and controlled rebound are critical to maintaining traction and control.
- Are these shock pistons compatible with my RC8B3? — Yes, these pistons are specifically engineered for RC8B3.2 and RC8B3.2e front shocks, with the 5x1.3mm configuration designed as the front piston specification for these platforms. They also fit RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e and equivalent model variations, making them broadly compatible across the RC8B3 series. If you're running an RC8T3 platform, you would require the 6x1.3mm configuration instead.
- Can I further customise these shock pistons? — Yes, Team Associated engineers specifically note in their pro setup tips that these piston holes can be drilled to larger diameters for additional tuning options, allowing you to fine-tune damping characteristics even further. This advanced customisation capability transforms these pistons into a complete suspension tuning platform, enabling racers to dial in their shock behaviour with precision typically found only in professional competition setups.
- What suspension tuning options does this pack provide? — The four-piston pack provides sufficient pistons for full RC buggy setup (front and rear pairs) with options to maintain spares for competition use. Team Associated provides professional setup guidance indicating that RC8B3.2 vehicles with emulsion shock caps use 5x1.3mm front and 5x1.4mm rear configurations, whilst bladder shock cap variants use 5x1.5mm front and a 3x1.5 plus 2x1.6 mixed configuration rear, giving you multiple tuning pathways.
- Are these Factory Team components? — Yes, the FT designation indicates these are official Team Associated Factory Team components, manufactured to the same exacting standards used by Team Associated's competition drivers and engineers, ensuring authentic quality and performance.
- What material are these pistons manufactured from? — These shock pistons are machined from high-quality Delrin, a premium engineering polymer widely recognised throughout the RC industry for its combination of durability, dimensional stability, consistent performance and resistance to the wear generated by continuous compression and rebound cycles during competitive racing.
