Overview
The Associated AS81200 RC8B3 Shock Pistons represent an essential upgrade and replacement part for serious RC enthusiasts operating Team Associated buggies in the UK RC racing community. Whether you're maintaining your RC8B3, RC8B3.1, or RC8B3.2 buggy or fine-tuning your suspension setup for competitive racing, this comprehensive shock piston set provides the variety needed to dial in your vehicle's performance characteristics. Team Associated is recognised globally as a leading manufacturer of competition-grade RC buggies, and genuine replacement parts like the AS81200 are crucial for maintaining optimal handling and suspension response.
Shock pistons play a vital role in your RC buggy's suspension system, directly influencing how effectively your shocks absorb impacts, manage energy transfer, and maintain consistent performance across varying track conditions. The AS81200 mixed pack supplies six quality pistons in three different configurations, allowing you to experiment with different damping characteristics and find the perfect balance for your specific driving style and local track conditions. For UK RC car enthusiasts competing in club races or casual weekend bashing sessions, having a selection of piston options means you're always prepared to make suspension adjustments without waiting for spare parts to arrive.
This is genuine Team Associated equipment manufactured to exacting standards, ensuring compatibility and reliability. The set's variety makes it an economical choice compared to purchasing individual piston options, and it represents excellent value for money whether you're a seasoned RC buggy racer or an enthusiastic hobbyist looking to maintain and improve your vehicle's performance.
Key Features
- 16mm Piston Diameter — These 16mm pistons are specifically designed for the RC8B3 series shocks, ensuring perfect fitment and optimal hydraulic performance within your vehicle's suspension system.
- Mixed Configuration Pack — The set includes both flat and tapered piston profiles in multiple hole sizes, giving you genuine flexibility to adjust your shock's damping rate and response characteristics without purchasing separate products.
- Two Flat Profile Pistons 6 x 1.3 — These flat-faced pistons deliver consistent damping with minimal fluid bypass, ideal for providing stable suspension characteristics on more predictable track surfaces.
- Four Tapered Profile Pistons — The set includes both 6 x 1.3 and 8 x 1.2 tapered pistons, which allow progressive damping as the piston compresses, providing a more sophisticated suspension response that adapts to impact severity.
- Quality Precision Engineering — Team Associated components are manufactured to stringent tolerances, ensuring each piston functions reliably and maintains consistent performance throughout the season.
- Compatible Across Multiple RC8B3 Variants — Whether you're running the standard RC8B3, the RC8B3.1 revision, or the latest RC8B3.2 specification buggy, these pistons provide full compatibility and interchangeability.
- Total of Six Pistons Supplied — The complete set contains six pistons in various configurations, providing excellent value and ensuring you have spares available if one piston requires replacement or if you want to maintain multiple shock configurations simultaneously.
Technical Performance
Shock pistons are precision-engineered hydraulic components that directly influence how your RC buggy's suspension responds to track conditions. The AS81200 set demonstrates genuine engineering quality through its use of precisely drilled orifices and carefully profiled piston faces. The flat-profile pistons (6 x 1.3) provide linear damping characteristics, meaning the resistance increases proportionally with compression speed, delivering predictable handling across a range of impacts. The tapered pistons offer progressive damping, where the relationship between compression speed and resistance becomes increasingly non-linear as the piston travels deeper into the shock body. This allows early-compression impacts to be managed gently whilst high-speed bottom-out events are cushioned more firmly, protecting both your RC car and the shock components from damage. The 8 x 1.2 tapered configuration provides slightly different damping characteristics compared to the 6 x 1.3 option, allowing experienced racers to fine-tune their suspension setup to exact specifications. The varying hole sizes (1.2mm and 1.3mm) create different flow rates through the shock fluid, directly affecting how quickly damping force builds. For competitive RC buggy racing in the UK, having these multiple options available means you can optimise your setup for different weather conditions, track surfaces, and your specific driving techniques. These are genuine Team Associated components manufactured to the same quality standards as the shocks themselves, ensuring reliability and consistent performance lap after lap.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between flat and tapered shock pistons? — Flat-profile pistons provide linear damping where resistance increases proportionally with compression speed, offering predictable and consistent suspension response. Tapered pistons deliver progressive damping, providing softer initial response for small impacts whilst building firmer resistance for larger impacts. For most UK RC racers, tapered pistons offer more sophisticated handling characteristics, particularly on challenging track surfaces with varied obstacles.
- Which piston configuration should I use for my RC8B3? — The choice depends on your track conditions and driving style. The 6 x 1.3 flat pistons suit drivers preferring linear, predictable handling. The 6 x 1.3 tapered pistons provide balanced progressive damping for general-purpose racing. The 8 x 1.2 tapered pistons offer slightly different damping rates and are preferred for more aggressive racing environments. We recommend trying different configurations at your local UK RC track to find what suits your vehicle and technique best.
- Are these pistons compatible with all RC8B3 variants? — Yes, these AS81200 pistons are specifically designed for and fully compatible with the Team Associated RC8B3, RC8B3.1, and RC8B3.2 models. The 16mm diameter and specifications are consistent across all three variants.
- How often should shock pistons be replaced? — Regular inspection is recommended, particularly if you notice changes in suspension response or if your shocks have experienced significant impacts. The pistons in this set are high-quality components, but like all consumable parts in competitive RC racing, they may require replacement after extended use or if damaged.
- What tools do I need to replace shock pistons? — You'll need basic shock service tools including a shock removal tool and shock disassembly tools specific to the RC8B3 series. Team Associated provides detailed manuals covering shock maintenance and piston replacement procedures for UK racers.
