Technical Performance
The Savox SV0220MG+ delivers impressive torque and speed specifications that make it suitable for a diverse range of RC applications across the UK hobby landscape. At 6.0V operation, the servo produces 6.5kg of torque with a response speed of 0.16 seconds per 60 degrees of movement, providing adequate power for light to medium control surface deflection in aircraft and most RC car steering applications. When operating at higher 7.4V, performance increases significantly to 8.0kg of torque with an impressive 0.13 second response time per 60 degrees, making it capable of snappy, responsive control suitable for faster RC cars, responsive helicopters and aerobatic aircraft that demand quick servo movement. The servo's brushed motor operates at a 240Hz refresh rate, ensuring smooth, continuous position updates from your radio receiver without visible jitter or hesitation in servo movement.
Construction quality is excellent throughout the SV0220MG+, with the metal gear train providing genuine durability advantages over plastic gear alternatives commonly found in budget servos. The servo case is constructed from durable plastic composite materials that resist impacts and vibration whilst keeping overall weight to just 59 grams. Operating current draw is minimal at idle, consuming just 5mA whether on 6.0V or 7.4V, making this an efficient choice for battery-powered RC models where power consumption matters. Under no-load running conditions, current consumption is a modest 100mA at 6.0V and 120mA at 7.4V, whilst at full stall (maximum load conditions), the servo draws up to 1500mA at 6.0V or 1800mA at 7.4V. The servo maintains stable operation across the full temperature range of -10°C to +50°C, covering everything from cool UK winter flying to summer operating sessions, and features a 120-degree operating travel range with a neutral position at 1500 microseconds, whilst maximum travel extends to approximately 164 degrees at pulse widths between 800 and 2200 microseconds.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Savox SV0220MG+ suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. This servo is straightforward to install and operate, requiring only a standard servo connection to your receiver. The metal gear construction means it's more durable than plastic-geared alternatives, and the pricing makes it accessible for newcomers to the RC hobby without requiring a significant investment. If you're building your first RC aircraft, helicopter or car in the UK, this is a sensible choice.
- What are the differences between 6V and 7.4V operation? — At 6.0V operation, the servo produces 6.5kg of torque with a response speed of 0.16 seconds per 60 degrees. When you increase voltage to 7.4V, torque increases to 8.0kg and speed improves to 0.13 seconds per 60 degrees, making the servo noticeably faster and more powerful. Most RC enthusiasts running 2S LiPo batteries or equivalent 7.4V packs will operate at the higher voltage for maximum performance.
- What battery voltage does this servo need? — The SV0220MG+ is rated for operation between 6.0V and 7.4V. Common options include two-cell lithium polymer (2S LiPo) batteries, NiMH battery packs, or standard receiver batteries. Do not exceed 7.4V as this will damage the servo's electronics.
- How does this servo compare to other standard servos? — The key differentiator is the metal gear train, which provides superior durability compared to plastic-geared budget servos, whilst the digital control delivers better accuracy than analogue servos. At 59 grams, it's lightweight enough for aircraft and helicopters, yet the torque specification makes it suitable for RC car steering and control applications. The addition of Soft Start Mode and Sanwa SSR compatibility in the Plus variant makes it more modern than basic servo alternatives.
- What is the servo's power consumption? — Idle current draw is minimal at just 5mA on either voltage, whilst no-load running draws 100mA at 6.0V or 120mA at 7.4V. Under full load (stall condition), current rises to 1500mA at 6.0V or 1800mA at 7.4V. For most applications, current draw is well within the capacity of standard RC batteries and receivers.
- Is this servo waterproof? — The SV0220MG+ features a plastic case design that provides basic moisture resistance suitable for typical RC applications. However, it is not fully sealed or waterproof, so it's best avoided in situations involving submersion or heavy water spray. For boat applications, ensure adequate ventilation and avoid splashing into the servo itself.
- What is the servo's weight and size? — The servo measures 40.3mm long, 20.2mm wide and 37.0mm high, with a weight of just 59 grams. This compact, lightweight design makes it ideal for aircraft, helicopters, small RC cars and boats where weight and space are considerations.
- What servo horn does it use? — The servo features a standard 25-tooth spline output, which is compatible with a wide variety of universal servo horns available from most UK RC retailers. This standardisation means you have plenty of options when setting up your control linkages.
