Overview
If you own a Traxxas X-Maxx, you know what's coming. At 19+ lbs (8.6+ kgs), this monster truck is built to bash hard and fly high, which means inverted slides, roof impacts and body damage are inevitable. The thin lexan body panels can be expensive to replace, with stock Traxxas bodies costing between £75 and £110. That's where RPM Roof Skid Rails step in to save the day. These protective rails are designed specifically for X-Maxx owners who want to keep their RC truck in top condition whilst enjoying aggressive driving without worrying about catastrophic body damage. Whether you're a weekend basher, a competitive racer, or just someone who loves pushing their RC car UK to the limits, these rails are an essential investment in protecting your machine.
The RPM Roof Skid Rails represent the kind of thoughtful engineering that serious RC enthusiasts have come to expect from RPM. Rather than trying to absorb impact through rigid materials, RPM uses proven nylon construction that flexes and absorbs energy during slides and roof contact. This isn't a luxury upgrade—it's smart damage prevention for anyone serious about their brushless RC monster truck. Installation takes just minutes, and the added peace of mind is invaluable. Once installed, you'll be able to push your X-Maxx harder knowing your expensive body is protected from the inevitable roof drags that come with running such a powerful, high-performance RC vehicle.
The design philosophy behind these roof skid rails is simple but effective. Rather than letting the roof scrape directly against concrete, gravel or grass during slides, the rails take the contact instead. The proven RPM nylons absorb the energy from these impacts, dissipating it safely rather than transferring it directly to the thin lexan body. This means less damage to your body shell, fewer repair costs, and more time actually driving your truck instead of fixing it. For anyone running a Traxxas X-Maxx in the UK or anywhere else, RPM Roof Skid Rails are a no-brainer accessory that pays for itself after just one or two serious crashes.
Key Features
- Proven RPM Nylon Construction — The rails are manufactured from RPM's proven nylon material, which is specifically engineered to absorb impact energy during slides and roof contact, protecting your expensive lexan body from damage far more effectively than rigid materials would.
- Simple Bolt-On Installation — Installation requires no modifications to your truck. Each rail is secured using just 3 screws per rail, making this an easy upgrade that takes minutes to install and can be removed or adjusted as needed.
- Full-Length Under-Body Support Plates — Included in the package are full-length support plates that mount underneath the rails, preventing them from being yanked off during aggressive flips and ensuring the rails stay firmly attached even when you flip your monster truck.
- Two Rails per Package — The kit includes both roof rails needed to protect your truck's entire roof area, providing balanced protection from side to side.
- Tested Compatibility — These rails have been extensively tested to work perfectly with specific Traxxas X-Maxx bodies including the #7711, #7711A, #7717G, #7711R and #7711X models, ensuring proper fit and function.
- Inexpensive Damage Prevention — At a fraction of the cost of a replacement body, these rails represent exceptional value for protecting a £75–£110 investment in lexan bodywork.
- Installation Screws Included — Everything needed for installation comes in the box, so you can fit them immediately without searching for additional hardware.
Technical Performance
The RPM Roof Skid Rails are engineered with a focus on protective performance rather than power specs. What matters here is durability, material quality and impact absorption. RPM has leveraged decades of experience building durable nylon suspension arms and other chassis components to create rails that won't crack, split or fail under the kind of punishment that an 8.6kg monster truck generates. The nylon construction is significantly more forgiving than rigid plastic or aluminium alternatives, flexing slightly under impact to absorb energy rather than transferring that force directly to your body. The full-length under-body support plates are equally critical—they're engineered to distribute forces across a wide area, preventing the rails from becoming leverage points that could crack the roof or rip the mounting points clean off. Installation is straightforward, using standard screws that come included in the package. These rails work specifically with Traxxas X-Maxx bodies and have been tested only with the listed body variants, so compatibility is guaranteed when you use a supported body type. The design takes into account the unique stresses and impact angles that occur when a 19+ lb brushless RC monster truck flips and slides on its roof, making this a purposeful solution rather than a generic protective add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will RPM Roof Skid Rails protect my expensive X-Maxx body? — Yes, absolutely. These rails are specifically designed to take the contact during roof slides and flips, with proven RPM nylon construction that absorbs impact energy and prevents damage to your lexan body. Rather than your expensive body touching the ground during inverted slides, the rails make contact first, protecting your £75–£110 investment in bodywork.
- Which Traxxas bodies are compatible with these roof skid rails? — These rails have been tested exclusively with Traxxas #7711, #7711A, #7717G, #7711R and #7711X bodies. RPM does not guarantee compatibility with any other Traxxas bodies or aftermarket alternatives, so checking your body part number before purchasing is important.
- How difficult is installation on my RC monster truck? — Installation is very straightforward and takes only a few minutes. Each rail bolts to the roof using 3 screws per rail (6 screws total), with all necessary hardware included in the package. No modifications to your truck are required, and the rails can be removed or adjusted as needed.
- What prevents these rails from getting torn off during a flip? — Full-length under-body support plates are included in the package. These plates mount underneath the rails and distribute force across a large area, preventing the rails from becoming a leverage point that could rip them off when you flip your X-Maxx.
- Why nylon instead of plastic or aluminium? — RPM chose nylon because it flexes and absorbs impact energy rather than transmitting it rigidly to your body. This proven material has been used in RPM suspension arms and other components for years, providing an optimal balance of durability and impact absorption that protects your expensive body from damage.
- Is this suitable for bashers and casual drivers? — Absolutely. If you own an X-Maxx and drive it regularly, you'll eventually flip it or slide on the roof. These rails make sense for anyone who wants to protect their bodywork and reduce repair costs over time, whether you're racing competitively or just enjoying weekend bashing sessions.
