Overview
The MIP 5.5MM Nut Driver Wrench Gen 2 (MIP9803) represents the latest evolution of one of the most iconic and trusted tools in the RC hobby industry. For nearly 30 years, MIP tools have been the go-to choice for RC enthusiasts across the UK and worldwide, from casual weekend bashers to World Championship competitors. This premium nut driver has been refined and enhanced with the new Gen 2 specification, bringing improved durability, enhanced visibility, and superior corrosion resistance while maintaining the legendary build quality and precision that MIP is renowned for. Whether you're maintaining an RC car UK setup, performing track-side adjustments, or undertaking detailed bench work, the MIP 5.5mm nut driver is an essential tool in any serious RC modeller's toolbox.
The Gen 2 update isn't a complete redesign—it's an intelligent evolution that builds upon the proven formula that has made MIP the #1 tool choice in the RC industry. The iconic amber polycarbonate handle remains, immediately recognisable in your tool collection, but now features laser-etched size markings and a protective black oxide coating instead of the previous nickel plating. These refinements address real-world wear and tear, ensuring your investment remains protected and performing like new for years to come. Every tool is hand-assembled and manufactured entirely in the USA, guaranteeing the precision tolerances and quality control that RC Model Shop customers have come to expect.
The 5.5mm size is one of the most versatile and frequently used nut driver sizes in RC maintenance, making it ideal for working on a wide range of popular RC models and platforms. The deep, thin-wall socket design allows you to reach nuts located on longer screws and access tight spaces where standard tools simply won't fit, a crucial advantage when working on complex RC car setups. If you're serious about maintaining your RC collection properly and want tools used by World Champions, the MIP 5.5MM Nut Driver Wrench Gen 2 is the professional choice.
Key Features
- Laser-Etched Size Markings — The Gen 2 upgrade includes clear, crisp laser-engraved size identification that is impossible to miss and far more durable than printed markings, ensuring quick and accurate tool selection even after years of heavy use in your RC workshop.
- Black Oxide Coating — Each tool now features a tough black oxide coating instead of nickel plating, providing superior protection against scratches, oxidation, and corrosion, which significantly extends the lifespan and performance of the tool in the demanding environment of regular RC maintenance and track use.
- Deep Thin-Wall Socket Head — The specially designed socket reaches nuts located on longer screws and fits into tight spaces that would be inaccessible with standard nut drivers, a critical advantage when performing detailed adjustments and maintenance on complex RC models.
- Colour-Coded Ring — The integrated colour-coded identification ring makes it instantly simple to distinguish this 5.5mm size from other MIP nut drivers in your collection, saving valuable time during setup and maintenance sessions.
- Optimised Tool Length — The shortened overall length of the Gen 2 driver provides improved ergonomics and superior control, making it more comfortable to use for extended periods and allowing better access to confined spaces on your RC car.
- Premium Polycarbonate Handle — The iconic amber handle is crafted from super-comfortable polycarbonate material that remains resilient in both hot and cold weather conditions, ensuring it won't become brittle, crack, or cause hand fatigue regardless of your workshop environment.
- Steel Construction — The tool is manufactured from high-quality steel optimised for durability and long-term wear characteristics, guaranteeing reliable performance through thousands of adjustments without deformation or failure.
- Hand-Assembled and USA-Made — Every MIP tool is individually hand-assembled and manufactured 100% in the USA, ensuring the precision tolerances, quality control, and attention to detail that have made MIP the trusted choice of RC World Champions and serious hobbyists for three decades.
- Iconic MIP Design Language — The Gen 2 tools maintain the recognisable amber handle aesthetic that has become synonymous with professional RC maintenance, while the subtle design refinements create a cohesive look and feel across your entire MIP tool collection.
Technical Performance
The MIP 5.5mm Nut Driver Wrench Gen 2 exemplifies professional-grade tool engineering designed specifically for the demands of RC car maintenance and setup. The tool features a robust steel construction optimised for durability and long-term wear characteristics, ensuring it will withstand thousands of applications without deformation, stripping, or performance degradation. The new black oxide coating represents a significant upgrade over traditional nickel plating, providing enhanced resistance to oxidation and corrosion whilst also offering superior scratch resistance during daily bench or track use. The deep, thin-wall socket head design is engineered to accommodate nuts located on longer fasteners whilst fitting into tight spaces where standard nut drivers cannot reach, a critical advantage for detailed RC work. The laser-etched size markings are precisely applied to the tool body and will remain crisp and legible indefinitely, unlike printed markings which fade with use. The optimised shorter length improves overall ergonomics, reducing hand fatigue during extended setup sessions and providing superior control when working on delicate RC components. The colour-coded ring system allows instantaneous visual identification, eliminating the need to inspect markings when selecting the correct size during rapid pit work or track adjustments. The polycarbonate handle material has been specifically selected for resilience across temperature extremes, ensuring it won't become brittle in cold weather or lose its structural integrity in hot conditions. This tool represents three decades of refinement in the professional RC tool sector, with engineering validated by World Championship competitors and trusted by RC hobbyists globally.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the MIP 5.5mm nut driver suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. While the MIP 5.5mm nut driver is used by World Champions and professional RC competitors, it is equally essential for beginners learning proper RC car maintenance. The ergonomic design and precise construction make it easier for newcomers to learn correct fastener techniques, and the durable construction means it will remain in your toolbox for years as your RC hobby progresses from casual basher to competition racer.
- What makes the Gen 2 upgrade worth purchasing if I already own a Gen 1 MIP nut driver? — The Gen 2 improvements address real-world durability concerns identified over decades of field use. The black oxide coating significantly extends tool lifespan compared to nickel plating by better resisting oxidation, corrosion, and scratching during daily workshop and trackside use. The laser-etched size markings are permanent and crisp, whereas printed markings fade with extended use. The shortened length and refined ergonomics make it more comfortable for extended use. If you perform regular RC maintenance or attend track days, these incremental improvements justify upgrading.
- What size nuts does the 5.5mm nut driver fit? — The 5.5mm specification indicates this tool is designed to securely grip and turn 5.5mm fasteners commonly used on popular RC car platforms, including a wide range of RC vehicle types and brands used in the UK RC hobby community.
- Will the black oxide coating scratch and wear off? — The black oxide coating is significantly more scratch-resistant than the previous nickel plating, though no coating is completely immune to heavy wear. The advantage of black oxide is that minor scratches are less visually apparent than on bright nickel plating, and the coating provides superior corrosion protection where the base steel is exposed, preventing rust formation that would compromise tool function.
- Can this nut driver access tight spaces on my RC car? — Yes. The thin-wall socket design and optimised shorter length make this tool specifically engineered to fit into confined spaces where standard tools cannot reach. The deep socket head allows you to access nuts located on longer fasteners, which is particularly valuable when working on complex RC car setups with multiple layers of components.
- Is this tool made in China like other affordable tools? — No. This is manufactured and hand-assembled 100% in the USA, ensuring the precision tolerances, quality control standards, and manufacturing integrity that distinguish professional-grade tools. MIP's USA manufacturing is a key reason these tools are trusted by World Championship competitors and serious RC hobbyists who cannot afford tool failure during critical competition or high-value repair work.
- How does the colour-coded ring help during maintenance? — The colour-coded ring provides instantaneous visual identification without requiring you to read the laser-etched markings, which is valuable during rapid pit work or trackside adjustments where speed is essential. When you have multiple MIP nut drivers in your collection (5.5mm, 5.8mm, etc.), the colour coding allows you to grab the correct tool immediately without pausing to check size specifications.
