Key Features
- MOD1 Profile — MOD1 (Module 1) gearing ensures compatibility with a wide range of RC vehicle platforms and transmissions, making this a versatile replacement option that works with many standard RC cars and trucks across different manufacturers' specifications.
- 15-Tooth Configuration — The 15-tooth count provides the optimal balance between acceleration response and top-end speed, making this gear count suitable for various driving conditions and vehicle types without requiring a complete drivetrain rebuild.
- Steel Construction — Unlike plastic or aluminium pinion gears, the hardened steel material resists stripping, cracking and wear, ensuring that your motor power is transmitted efficiently to the spur gear without loss of teeth or performance degradation over extended use.
- 5mm Bore Diameter — The standard 5mm shaft bore accommodates most common electric motor shafts used in modern RC vehicles, ensuring a secure fit and preventing slippage during high-torque situations that could damage both the gear and motor.
- Precise Tolerances — Fastrax engineers each gear to exacting manufacturing standards, ensuring smooth meshing action with your existing spur gear, reduced vibration, quieter operation, and improved overall drivetrain efficiency compared to lower-grade alternatives.
Technical Performance
The Fastrax M1 15T Steel Pinion Gear represents precision engineering focused on reliability and durability. Steel offers superior hardness and resistance to the wear and damage that commonly affects plastic pinion gears during sustained high-torque operation. The MOD1 profile is the industry standard for many RC cars, trucks, and crawlers, making this gear a drop-in replacement for countless popular vehicles available to UK RC enthusiasts. The 5mm bore is a universal standard that fits most brushless and brushed electric motor shafts found in 1/10 scale and smaller electric RC vehicles. When selecting a pinion gear, tooth count directly affects your vehicle's performance characteristics: this 15-tooth configuration strikes a balance suitable for mixed-use driving, offering reasonable acceleration whilst maintaining manageable top speed without excessive strain on the motor. For vehicles requiring more aggressive acceleration, a lower tooth count might be preferred; conversely, vehicles designed for higher-speed running might utilise higher tooth counts. The precise manufacturing tolerances ensure minimal backlash and smooth, quiet operation during both casual bashing and competitive driving. This gear is an investment in your RC vehicle's longevity and performance, particularly important if you've experienced premature gear failure with plastic alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this pinion gear compatible with my RC car? — The MOD1 profile and 5mm bore make this gear compatible with most electric RC cars, trucks, and crawlers that use M1 gearing systems. However, compatibility depends on your vehicle's existing spur gear and drivetrain specifications. Check your vehicle's manual or manufacturer website to confirm MOD1 compatibility before ordering. If you're unsure, contact our expert team at RC Model Shop and we'll help identify the correct gear for your model.
- Why choose steel over plastic pinion gears? — Steel pinion gears offer substantially greater durability and resistance to stripping, particularly during high-torque acceleration or in vehicles powered by brushless motors. Whilst plastic gears are lighter, steel provides superior longevity and consistent performance, making them ideal for serious hobbyists and competitive drivers who demand reliability from their RC equipment.
- What tooth count do I need for my vehicle? — Tooth count determines your vehicle's acceleration and top speed. The 15-tooth configuration offers balanced performance suitable for mixed driving conditions. Lower tooth counts (such as 13T) provide quicker acceleration but lower top speed, whilst higher counts (17T, 19T) favour speed over acceleration. Your vehicle's manufacturer typically recommends specific gear ratios in the manual.
- Will this gear fit my existing motor shaft? — The 5mm bore is the universal standard for most electric RC motors in 1/10 scale and smaller vehicles. If your motor has a 5mm shaft, this gear will fit securely. Some specialty motors use different shaft sizes (such as 3.17mm or 6mm), so always verify your motor shaft diameter before ordering.
- How long will a steel pinion gear last? — With proper maintenance, a quality steel pinion gear can outlast multiple plastic alternatives. Lifespan depends on driving style, vehicle weight, motor power, and gearing ratio. Regular inspection for wear and proper lubrication of the gear mesh will maximise longevity and maintain smooth operation.
