Key Features
- High-Quality Hardened Multi-Layered Hobby Plywood Construction — This obstacle is manufactured from exceptional multi-layered hobby plywood that has been specifically hardened for longevity and durability, ensuring your course component will withstand years of climbing attempts, weather exposure, and repeated use without warping, splitting or deteriorating. The choice of hardened plywood over standard timber means you're investing in a component that will maintain its structural integrity and aesthetic appearance throughout many seasons of RC crawling.
- Suitable for 1/24 and 1/18 Scale Crawlers — This obstacle is precisely scaled and engineered to work perfectly with both 1/24 and 1/18 scale RC crawlers, making it compatible with a vast range of popular crawler models available in the UK RC market today. Whether you're running a compact 1/24 scale mini crawler or a more substantial 1/18 scale rig, this obstacle provides the appropriate challenge and physical proportions for realistic, engaging terrain interaction.
- Challenging Up'N'Over Design — The distinctive up and over profile creates a genuine technical challenge that requires skilled throttle modulation, precise line selection, and careful weight management to navigate successfully. This isn't a simple ramp—it's a strategically designed obstacle that rewards smooth driving technique and punishes aggressive approaches, making every successful crossing a genuine achievement worth celebrating.
- Intermediate Assembly Difficulty (4 out of 5) — With a skill rating of 4/5, this kit is aimed at hobbyists who want a rewarding and genuinely engaging build experience that goes beyond basic snapping together. You'll need to invest time and attention during assembly, but the result is a custom-built obstacle that you can take genuine pride in, knowing you've constructed it with your own hands using proper techniques.
- Keyed Hardwood Pieces for Precise Alignment — The obstacle includes keyed hardwood pieces that ensure precise alignment during assembly, preventing misalignment issues and guaranteeing that your finished obstacle is perfectly square, level, and structurally sound. These keyed components take the guesswork out of assembly and ensure professional-grade results.
- Self-Tapping Screws for Secure Assembly — Heavy-duty self-tapping screws are included for every fastening point, providing quick, reliable assembly without the need for pre-drilling whilst ensuring a permanent, vibration-resistant connection that won't loosen over time or with repeated use.
- Steel Angle Brackets for Rock-Solid Construction — Professional-grade angle brackets provide additional structural support and rigidity at all critical joints, preventing flexing or movement under load and ensuring your obstacle remains perfectly stable even when supporting heavier 1/18 crawlers making repeated climbing attempts.
Technical Performance
This obstacle represents a significant step up in build complexity and quality compared to basic cardboard or foam alternatives commonly available in the budget RC market. The hardened multi-layered hobby plywood specification indicates engineering-grade materials that have been specifically selected for the unique stresses encountered during RC crawler courses. The combination of keyed hardwood pieces, self-tapping screws, and steel angle brackets creates a construction system that guarantees alignment accuracy, assembly simplicity, and long-term durability. The obstacle is engineered to withstand repeated climbing impacts from both 1/24 and 1/18 scale RC crawlers without degradation, flexing, or surface splintering that would occur with inferior materials. The up and over profile creates specific performance challenges: the initial climbing phase requires sustained throttle and body roll management, the apex demands smooth weight distribution, and the descent phase tests your braking control and line precision. Unlike simple ramps that can be conquered with raw power, this obstacle profile demands technical skill and forces drivers to develop the smooth, controlled driving techniques that define accomplished RC crawler pilots. For UK-based RC enthusiasts building dedicated crawler courses, this Type A variant offers a distinct challenge profile that pairs excellently with other FASTRAX obstacles to create varied, engaging terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FASTRAX Up'N'Over Climbing Bridge suitable for beginners? — The obstacle itself is suitable for both experienced and beginner crawlers—the challenge level is determined by your driving technique rather than the obstacle itself. However, the kit assembly requires intermediate hobbyist skills rated at 4/5, so you should be comfortable working with hand tools, following detailed instructions, and understanding basic woodworking techniques. Beginners who have assembled RC models before should manage the build process successfully.
- What scale crawlers will this obstacle fit? — This obstacle is specifically designed and scaled for 1/24 and 1/18 scale RC crawlers. Smaller or larger scale models may not interact with the obstacle proportionally, so scale compatibility is essential when incorporating this into your course.
- How long does assembly take? — With a skill rating of 4/5, assembly typically requires 2-4 hours depending on your experience with similar projects and how carefully you work to achieve perfect alignment. Taking your time to ensure all keyed pieces fit precisely and all screws are properly seated will result in the strongest, most durable finished product.
- What makes Type A different from other FASTRAX obstacles? — The Type A variant features a distinctive up and over climbing profile that creates different technical challenges compared to other obstacle types in the FASTRAX range. This variation allows you to build diverse, engaging courses that test different driving skills and maintain interest for multiple sessions.
- Can this obstacle be used outdoors? — The hardened multi-layered hobby plywood is designed to withstand outdoor conditions, though like all wooden structures it benefits from occasional inspection and maintenance. If using outdoors regularly, you may wish to apply wood sealant (not included) to extend the lifespan further, particularly in high-rainfall UK climates.
- Is this a ready-to-use obstacle or does it require assembly? — This is a kit that requires assembly. All necessary components and fasteners are included, but you must assemble the obstacle according to the detailed instructions provided. This hands-on approach means you control the build quality and can ensure perfect alignment and sturdy construction.
