Technical Performance
The Corally 32 DP pinion represents a fundamental component in your RC car's drivetrain architecture, and its quality directly impacts your vehicle's acceleration, top speed, efficiency and reliability. Built from special hardened steel, this pinion demonstrates superior material science compared to standard steel options, providing enhanced resistance to the shear forces and impact loads generated during acceleration and deceleration cycles. The hardened steel construction is particularly valuable for competitive RC racing in the UK, where drivers push their vehicles to the limit and demand components that can withstand sustained high-performance driving. The CNC-cut teeth ensure that every tooth profile matches the manufacturer's specifications precisely, eliminating the run-out and concentricity issues that can develop with standard stamped or moulded gears. This precision is critical because even minor variations in tooth spacing or profile can cause jerky power delivery, increased friction losses and accelerated wear patterns when the pinion meshes with your spur gear. With an overall length of just 13.00mm and a tooth width of 6.20mm, the pinion is compact and lightweight, minimising rotational inertia and contributing to responsive handling characteristics. The 2.0mm hex key sizing indicates a professional-grade component designed for secure installation and easy removal for maintenance or gear ratio changes. By selecting this pinion as part of your RC car setup, you're investing in a component that will deliver smooth, efficient power transmission, reduced vibration and exceptional durability across countless laps and driving sessions at your local RC track.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need one for my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear that mounts directly onto your RC car's motor shaft and meshes with the larger spur gear attached to the vehicle's main drivetrain. Together, these gears form the primary speed reduction system that converts the motor's high RPM output into usable torque and wheel speed. By selecting different pinion sizes (measured in tooth count), you can adjust your RC car's gear ratio to optimise acceleration versus top speed, allowing you to dial in the perfect setup for your specific track layout and driving style.
- What is 32 DP and why does it matter? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, which is a standardised measurement system that defines how the teeth on a gear are proportioned and spaced. 32 DP is one of the most common standards used in modern RC racing vehicles throughout the UK. By choosing a 32 DP pinion, you ensure compatibility with the full range of 32 DP spur gears available, giving you maximum flexibility when experimenting with different gear ratios.
- How do I know if this pinion will fit my RC car? — This pinion is designed for any RC car with a 32 DP drivetrain system and a 5.0mm motor shaft diameter. Check your vehicle's specifications or documentation to confirm it uses 32 DP gears and has a 5.0mm shaft on your motor. If you're uncertain, contact our experienced RC Model Shop team, and we'll help you identify the correct pinion for your specific vehicle.
- What is the difference between 16-tooth and other tooth count pinions? — The tooth count on a pinion directly determines your vehicle's gear ratio when paired with a specific spur gear. A 16-tooth pinion represents a mid-range option that offers a balanced compromise between acceleration and top speed. Lower tooth counts (like 15T) provide faster acceleration and better traction on tight technical courses, whilst higher tooth counts (like 17T or 18T) allow higher top speeds on flowing open tracks. Experimenting with different tooth counts is one of the most effective ways to optimise your RC car's performance for specific conditions.
- Why is hardened steel better than standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes a special heat treatment process that increases its hardness and strength, making it significantly more resistant to tooth stripping, impact damage and premature wear. This means a hardened steel pinion will maintain its tooth profile longer, deliver consistent performance over extended use and ultimately provide better value for money through its extended lifespan compared to standard steel alternatives.
- What does CNC-cut mean and why does it matter? — CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting means the teeth are precisely machined using automated computer-controlled equipment rather than stamped or moulded, which can introduce inconsistencies. CNC-cut teeth offer superior accuracy and concentricity, meaning there's virtually no run-out when the gear rotates. This translates to smoother mesh with your spur gear, less vibration, quieter operation and more efficient power transmission throughout your RC car's drivetrain.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst this is a professional-grade component designed for serious RC racers, it's equally suitable for beginners and casual RC enthusiasts. Understanding gear ratios is an important part of getting the most from your RC car, and this pinion offers an excellent introduction to gear ratio tuning at a reasonable price point. Whether you're just starting out with RC cars in the UK or you're a seasoned competitor, this pinion provides reliable performance and excellent value.
- Can I use this pinion with different spur gears? — Yes, as long as the spur gear is also 32 DP specification, this pinion will mesh correctly. The 16-tooth count on this pinion can be paired with various spur gear sizes (typically ranging from 48T to 86T depending on your vehicle), and by combining this pinion with different spur gears, you can create a range of gear ratio options. Our RC Model Shop team can help you calculate gear ratios and recommend compatible spur gear options for your specific vehicle and driving needs.
- What tools do I need to install this pinion? — You'll need a 2.0mm hex key (allen key) to secure this pinion onto your motor shaft. Most RC enthusiasts already have a set of hex keys in their maintenance kit, but if you don't have one, these are inexpensive and widely available. Installation is straightforward — slide the pinion onto your motor shaft, align it properly with your spur gear, and tighten the hex screw securely using the 2.0mm key.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion depends on how frequently you run your RC car, how aggressively you drive and the quality of maintenance you perform. A hardened steel pinion like this one should provide thousands of kilometres of reliable service. However, if you notice teeth becoming rounded, stripped or damaged, or if your RC car starts displaying jerky acceleration or grinding noises, it's time to replace the pinion. Inspecting your pinion regularly during maintenance sessions helps you catch wear before it becomes a problem.
