Technical Performance

The Corally 48 DP Pinion 33T represents the pinnacle of pinion gear engineering, combining special hardened steel with precision CNC manufacturing to deliver uncompromising performance. At 33 teeth, this pinion strikes an excellent balance suited to a wide variety of RC car UK driving scenarios and track conditions. The 48 DP pitch specification is the industry standard for RC car powertrains, ensuring seamless integration with compatible spur gears and motor assemblies. With a 3.17mm shaft diameter bore, this pinion fits all motors designed for standard 1/10 scale and similar-sized RC vehicles. The pinion measures 9mm in length and features a 4mm teeth width, providing robust engagement with spur gears whilst minimising side-to-side play. The special hardened steel material undergoes precision heat treatment and CNC tooth shaping, resulting in tolerances so tight that concentricity is guaranteed. This means zero run-out, perfectly aligned teeth and vibration-free meshing with your spur gear. The result is smooth power delivery, minimal friction losses, reduced heat generation and extended component lifespan. Whether you're running brushless or brushed motors, competitive racing or casual bashing, this hardened pinion will handle the demands placed upon it, delivering consistent gear mesh and reliable performance lap after lap. The 1.5mm hex key size makes installation and removal straightforward with standard RC tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Corally 48 DP 33T pinion suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. This pinion is suitable for any RC hobbyist from complete beginner to experienced racer. The 33-tooth configuration provides a well-balanced gear ratio that works well on most tracks and driving styles. Beginners benefit from the precision engineering and durability, whilst competitive racers appreciate the consistency and reliability needed for winning performance. The only requirement is that your RC car uses 48DP gearing and has a 3.17mm motor shaft.
  • What is the difference between hardened steel and standard steel pinions? — Hardened steel pinions like this Corally component undergo specialised heat treatment that increases their material hardness and wear resistance. This means they last significantly longer under heavy use, resist deformation better and maintain their precise tooth geometry even after extended racing or bashing. Standard steel pinions wear faster, can deform under heavy loads and may develop run-out over time. For serious RC car UK enthusiasts, hardened steel is the clear choice for longevity and reliability.
  • How many teeth should I choose for my RC car? — The tooth count on your pinion determines your final gear ratio when paired with a specific spur gear. The 33-tooth configuration in this pinion offers a middle-ground option that works well on most track types and driving styles. Lower tooth counts (like 31T or 32T) provide faster acceleration but lower top speed, suitable for tight technical tracks. Higher tooth counts (like 34T or 35T) provide higher top speed but slower acceleration, better for open flowing tracks. Your choice depends on your track layout, driving style and what performance characteristics you prefer. Most competitive racers carry multiple pinions to experiment with different ratios.
  • What makes CNC-cut teeth better than other manufacturing methods? — CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines can cut teeth with extraordinary precision, ensuring every tooth on the pinion is identical in size, shape and positioning. This precision guarantees perfect concentricity (the teeth run true without wobble) and smooth meshing with spur gears. Traditional stamping or other methods cannot achieve this level of precision, resulting in slight variations between teeth that cause vibration, noise and accelerated wear. CNC-cut pinions like this Corally component deliver superior smoothness, efficiency and longevity.
  • Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion will fit any RC car that uses 48DP gearing (the standard for most 1/10 scale and similar-sized RC vehicles) and has a motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter. Check your RC car's specifications or consult with your manufacturer to confirm it uses 48DP gearing. If your car uses a different pitch specification (like 32DP or 64DP) or a different shaft diameter (like 5mm), you'll need a different pinion. The Corally range includes pinions for all common specifications.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With hardened steel pinions like this Corally component, replacement frequency depends heavily on use intensity. Casual recreational drivers might use the same pinion for a season or more, whilst competitive racers pushing maximum performance might rotate pinions every few months. Regular inspection is recommended — if you notice teeth becoming rounded, visible wear patterns or increased vibration during operation, it's time to replace the pinion. The investment in a quality hardened steel pinion means fewer replacements compared to cheaper alternatives.
  • Can I mix this Corally pinion with non-Corally spur gears? — Yes, this pinion will work with any quality 48DP spur gear from any manufacturer, as 48DP is an industry standard. However, for optimal performance and longevity, Team Corally recommends using Corally spur gears matched with Corally pinions, as they're engineered together for perfect tooth profile compatibility. Mixing quality components from reputable manufacturers generally works fine, but the most reliable results come from matched component sets.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion? — Installation is straightforward with basic RC tools. You'll need a 1.5mm hex key (included in most RC tool sets) to secure the pinion to your motor shaft set screw. You may also need wheel pullers or bearing pullers depending on your motor mount design if you're removing an existing pinion. Most RC car UK owners have these standard tools in their workshop.
  • Is this pinion waterproof for wet weather racing? — Pinion gears themselves are not affected by water since they're solid steel components. However, the overall drivetrain reliability in wet conditions depends on your motor, ESC and bearing protection. This hardened steel pinion will function perfectly in wet weather racing, though you should ensure your motor and bearings are appropriately sealed or protected if racing in wet conditions.
