Overview
The Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 42 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71342) is a precision engineered pinion gear designed for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and performance. This hardened steel pinion gear is a critical component in any RC vehicle's drivetrain, responsible for transmitting power from your motor to the main transmission. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor fine-tuning your buggy, truggy, or monster truck, or an enthusiast looking to upgrade your RC car UK setup, this Corally pinion represents the quality engineering that serious RC hobbyists have come to expect from the brand.
Pinion gears are fundamental to RC vehicle performance, and selecting the right one can make the difference between smooth acceleration, optimal speed delivery, and overall drivetrain longevity. The 64 DP (diametral pitch) specification indicates this is a fine-pitch gear, commonly used in modern electric RC vehicles where precision and smooth power delivery are paramount. With 42 teeth and a 3.17mm shaft diameter, this pinion is engineered to work seamlessly with standard RC motor shafts and spur gear combinations, making it an excellent choice for builders and maintainers of ready to run RC cars and custom-built machines alike.
Corally, a recognised brand in the RC hobby space, manufactures this pinion using hardened steel construction, which provides superior durability compared to softer materials. This investment in material quality means your pinion will withstand repeated engagement cycles, high torque loads, and the demands of competitive RC racing or casual weekend bashing. If you're searching for a replacement pinion, upgrading your RC car's drivetrain, or building a custom RC setup, the Corally 64 DP pinion offers excellent value and proven reliability.
Key Features
- 64 DP Pitch Specification — The 64 DP (diametral pitch) rating ensures this pinion gear is compatible with standard 64 DP spur gears commonly found in modern electric RC vehicles, allowing you to fine-tune your gear ratio for optimal acceleration and top speed performance.
- 42 Teeth Configuration — With 42 teeth, this pinion offers a specific gear ratio when paired with various spur gear tooth counts, enabling you to customise your RC car's performance characteristics to match your driving style, track conditions, or competition requirements.
- Hardened Steel Construction — The use of hardened steel ensures superior strength and longevity compared to standard or brass alternatives, meaning the pinion resists wear, deformation, and tooth stripping even under sustained high-load conditions during aggressive driving or racing.
- 3.17mm Shaft Diameter — This standard shaft diameter is engineered to fit securely onto most RC motor shafts, ensuring reliable power transmission without slippage and maintaining the integrity of your drivetrain under acceleration and braking forces.
- Short Profile Design — The short pinion design minimises rotational mass and inertia, allowing for quicker acceleration response and more direct power delivery to your spur gear and transmission assembly, which translates to more responsive handling in your RC car.
- Precision Engineering — Corally's manufacturing process ensures tight tolerances and perfect tooth profile, meaning smooth engagement with your spur gear, reduced noise during operation, and minimal drivetrain backlash for improved overall vehicle control.
Technical Performance
The Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel represents precision engineering at its finest for RC vehicle drivetrains. Manufactured from hardened steel, this pinion gear delivers exceptional durability and resistance to the wear and tear that comes with regular RC car usage, whether you're running a brushless motor-powered vehicle or optimising a high-performance setup. The 64 DP specification is the industry standard for modern electric RC cars, buggies, trucks, and other competition-grade platforms, indicating this pinion will integrate seamlessly with your existing drivetrain components. The 42-tooth configuration provides a balanced approach to gear ratios — not too aggressive for speed-focused setups, yet not too conservative for acceleration-hungry builds. The 3.17mm shaft diameter is the standard for most modern RC motors, ensuring a secure fit without wobble or misalignment that could cause premature wear or power loss. At approximately 6.95 EUR (approximately £5.74 excl. VAT when ordering through authorised UK retailers), this pinion represents excellent value for a precision hardened steel component. The short profile reduces unnecessary weight and rotational inertia, allowing your motor to spool up more quickly and deliver power more directly to the drivetrain, resulting in snappier acceleration and more responsive vehicle behaviour on the track or trail. This pinion is ideal for racers and enthusiasts who understand that drivetrain optimisation, including precise gear selection, is key to unlocking their RC car's full potential.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does 64 DP mean and how do I know if this pinion is compatible with my RC car? — 64 DP stands for 64 diametral pitch, which is a standard gear measurement used in RC vehicles. If your RC car uses 64 DP gears (which is the standard for most modern brushless RC cars in the UK market), then this Corally pinion is compatible. Check your vehicle's manual or existing spur gear to confirm the DP rating before purchasing.
- What is the difference between 42 teeth and other tooth counts like 44, 46, or 48? — The tooth count directly affects your vehicle's gear ratio. A 42-tooth pinion will provide more aggressive acceleration compared to higher tooth counts like 44, 46, or 48, but will result in lower top speed. Conversely, fewer teeth would provide higher top speed but less acceleration. Choose based on your driving preferences and track conditions — 42 teeth is a popular mid-range option suitable for general-purpose RC driving.
- Is hardened steel better than other materials for pinion gears? — Yes, hardened steel offers superior durability and resistance to wear compared to softer materials or plastic alternatives. For regular RC car use, racing, or high-performance driving, a hardened steel pinion like this Corally unit will maintain its tooth integrity longer and provide more consistent performance throughout its lifespan.
- Can I use this pinion with any 3.17mm motor shaft? — The 3.17mm shaft diameter is a standard specification for most modern RC motors, including brushless options used in ready to run RC cars and custom builds. However, you should always verify that your motor has a 3.17mm shaft before purchasing. Some older vehicles or speciality builds may use different shaft sizes such as 2.0mm, 2.3mm, or other specifications.
- What is the short profile, and why does it matter? — The short profile means the pinion gear has a reduced axial width (the dimension along the motor shaft), which minimises rotational mass and inertia. This results in faster acceleration response and more direct power delivery, making your RC car feel more responsive and lively during acceleration.
- Will I need to replace my pinion gear regularly? — With proper maintenance, a hardened steel pinion like this should provide extended service life. However, high-mileage vehicles, racing applications, or aggressive driving may require replacement if teeth become worn or damaged. Always inspect your pinion regularly and look for signs of wear, such as rounded tooth edges or visible damage.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a precision component rather than a complete vehicle or ready to run RC car, it is suitable for beginners who are learning about RC drivetrain maintenance and customisation. If you're just starting with RC vehicles, begin with a ready to run kit, then learn about gear selection and drivetrain tuning as you gain experience.
- What is the difference between this and Corally's other pinion options? — Corally offers this same 64 DP hardened steel pinion in various tooth counts (42, 44, 46, 48, 50 teeth), allowing you to select the exact gear ratio for your performance needs. The primary difference between models is the tooth count, which affects acceleration and top speed characteristics.
