Overview

The Team Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 39 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71339) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and performance. This specialist component is manufactured to exacting standards using hardened steel, ensuring durability through countless hours of high-speed running and competitive racing. Whether you're building a competition-grade RC car, upgrading an existing setup, or maintaining your fleet of remote control vehicles, this pinion gear delivers the quality and consistency that serious hobbyists expect from Team Corally.

Pinion gears are essential components in any RC car's drivetrain, responsible for transferring power from the motor to the spur gear and ultimately to the wheels. The 39-tooth configuration offers a specific gear ratio that suits particular motor and spur gear combinations, making it ideal for racers and bashers who need fine-tuned acceleration and top-speed characteristics. With a 64 diametral pitch (DP) specification, this pinion is compatible with matching 64DP spur gears, giving you flexibility in building or modifying your RC setup. Team Corally's reputation for quality means you can trust this component to perform consistently, lap after lap, whether you're competing in organised RC racing events or enjoying weekend bashing sessions across the UK.

The short-length design of this pinion gear makes it suitable for a wide range of RC car platforms and motor mounting configurations. By choosing the correct tooth count from Team Corally's comprehensive range of 64DP pinions—available from 17 teeth through to 40 teeth—you can dial in the perfect performance characteristics for your specific vehicle, motor power, track conditions, or driving style. This 39-tooth variant represents a mid-range option that many experienced RC racers favour for balanced performance.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from hardened steel, a material that resists wear, stripping, and damage from the constant meshing and power transmission that occurs during RC car operation. This ensures longevity and reliability, reducing the need for frequent replacements and saving you money over time.
  • 64 Diametral Pitch (DP) Specification — The 64DP standard ensures this pinion meshes perfectly with matching 64DP spur gears, maintaining smooth power delivery and minimising vibration during acceleration and high-speed running. This precision specification is essential for competitive racers who need predictable performance.
  • 39-Tooth Configuration — The 39-tooth count provides a specific gear ratio that suits particular combinations of motor KV, vehicle weight, and intended use. This mid-range tooth count is popular among RC car racers seeking balanced acceleration and top-speed characteristics, making it versatile for both competition and recreational driving.
  • 3.17mm Shaft Diameter — The shaft diameter of 3.17mm is a standard size in RC car applications, ensuring compatibility with most modern brushless and brushed RC motors. This standardised specification means you can confidently order knowing it will fit your motor pinion shaft without adapters or modifications.
  • Short-Length Design — The short pinion design accommodates various motor mounting configurations and vehicle platforms, providing flexibility when building or upgrading RC cars. This compact profile helps reduce drivetrain stress and improves overall system efficiency.
  • Team Corally Quality Assurance — Team Corally is renowned throughout the RC community for manufacturing high-quality components that meet strict tolerances. Every pinion is precision-machined to ensure consistent mesh with spur gears, reliable power transmission, and predictable handling characteristics.

Technical Performance

The Team Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel represents the pinnacle of precision gear manufacturing for RC cars. The 39-tooth count, combined with the 3.17mm shaft diameter, places this pinion in a versatile performance bracket suitable for a wide variety of RC car types and motor configurations. The hardened steel material undergoes specialised heat treatment processes that increase surface hardness and wear resistance, allowing the pinion to withstand the enormous forces generated during acceleration, braking, and cornering in competitive RC racing environments. The 64DP pitch specification means this pinion works in harmony with matching 64DP spur gears, maintaining precise mesh alignment and minimising backlash—the small amount of play between meshing teeth. Excessive backlash leads to poor power delivery, vibration, and eventual gear damage; Team Corally's precision manufacturing keeps this to a minimum. The short-length profile is engineered to work with both direct-drive motor systems and offset motor mounts, giving you flexibility in chassis design. Whether you're running a sensored or sensorless brushless motor, or a traditional brushed motor system, this pinion gear will integrate seamlessly into your drivetrain. The 3.17mm shaft diameter is industry-standard for most modern RC motor shafts, eliminating compatibility concerns. For UK RC car racers competing in 1/10-scale buggy, truck, or touring car classes, or for hobbyists building custom RC setups, this pinion offers the reliability and performance characteristics needed for consistent, predictable driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need it in my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted on the motor shaft that meshes with a larger spur gear in the transmission. Together, they create a gear ratio that determines how much the motor's rotational speed is reduced before being transferred to the wheels. A lower tooth count pinion (like 39 teeth) results in higher top speed but lower acceleration, whilst a higher tooth count provides better acceleration but lower top speed. Choosing the correct pinion is essential for tuning your RC car's performance.
  • What does 64DP mean, and why is it important? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, a measurement that defines the size and spacing of gear teeth. 64DP is a standard specification in RC car racing, meaning the gear teeth are precisely sized to mesh with other 64DP components. Using a 64DP pinion with a non-64DP spur gear will result in poor mesh, vibration, and potential damage. Always match your pinion and spur gear specifications.
  • Will this 39-tooth pinion work with my RC car? — The 39-tooth pinion will work with any RC car that has a motor with a 3.17mm pinion shaft and a matching 64DP spur gear in the transmission. Before purchasing, check your vehicle's documentation or contact the manufacturer to confirm these specifications. Team Corally offers pinions ranging from 17 to 40 teeth, allowing you to find the perfect tooth count for your specific setup and driving style.
  • How do I know which tooth count pinion to choose? — The correct pinion tooth count depends on your motor KV rating, vehicle weight, intended use (racing or bashing), track surface, and personal driving preferences. Generally, lower tooth count pinions (17-25 teeth) are used for high-speed applications and lightweight vehicles, mid-range counts (26-35 teeth) offer balanced performance, and higher counts (36-40 teeth) provide better acceleration and torque. Consult your vehicle manual or speak with experienced RC racers in your local community for recommendations specific to your setup.
  • Is the Team Corally pinion gear suitable for beginners? — Yes, Team Corally pinion gears are suitable for RC enthusiasts of all skill levels. Beginners should focus on choosing the correct tooth count for their specific vehicle and motor combination; once installed, the pinion requires no special knowledge to operate. However, understanding gear ratios and how to select the appropriate pinion will help you get the best performance from your RC car.
  • How long does a hardened steel pinion gear last? — With proper maintenance and correct mesh adjustment, a hardened steel pinion gear like this Team Corally component should last hundreds of hours of use. The lifespan depends on driving intensity, maintenance frequency, and whether the gear teeth remain properly meshed with the spur gear. Regularly inspect your gears for signs of wear, and replace if teeth become damaged or significantly worn.
  • Can I use this pinion gear in different RC vehicles? — Yes, this pinion gear can be used in any RC car that has a motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter and a 64DP transmission system. This includes 1/10-scale buggies, trucks, touring cars, and many other RC car types from various manufacturers, provided they use standard 64DP gears. Always verify compatibility before purchasing.
