Overview

The Associated 3x27.5 Shock Shaft V2 Chrome (AS91620) is a premium replacement shock shaft designed for serious RC enthusiasts who demand smooth, consistent damping performance from their 1/10 scale buggy or truck. Whether you're running an Associated RC10B5, RC10B5M, RC10T5M or B44.3, this Factory Team Chrome shock shaft delivers the refined performance that competitive RC car UK drivers expect. The V2 design represents the latest evolution in Associated's shock technology, offering a perfect balance between durability and responsiveness that makes it an essential spare part for anyone maintaining their RC buggy or truck at peak performance levels.

This is not simply a replacement component—it's an upgrade opportunity. The Factory Team Chrome surface finish is engineered for the smoothest possible shock action, helping you achieve the consistent damping response needed for controlled cornering, smooth acceleration and predictable handling characteristics across different track surfaces. If you're experiencing worn shocks or uneven damping in your Associated RC10 or B-series buggy, this genuine OEM shock shaft will restore your vehicle's suspension performance to factory specification or better. For RC car enthusiasts in the UK who take their racing seriously, having spare shock shafts in your spares box is essential—especially when you've invested in a competitive platform like the RC10B5 or T5M.

Key Features

  • 3mm Diameter Precision Shaft — The 3mm diameter provides the ideal balance between shaft rigidity and piston sealing contact, ensuring consistent damping throughout the full stroke range without binding or play that could compromise handling precision.
  • 27.5mm Stroke Length — The 27.5mm stroke dimension is matched specifically to corresponding shock bodies and must be paired correctly for optimal suspension geometry and ride height performance on your RC buggy or truck.
  • V2 Design with Screw-Secured Piston — The latest V2 generation features a screw-mounted piston design that provides secure, rattle-free attachment and prevents piston slip during aggressive driving or high-speed cornering.
  • Factory Team Chrome Surface Finish — The premium Chrome coating reduces friction between shaft and seal, delivering smoother damping action compared to standard finishes and helping maintain consistent performance throughout extended driving sessions.
  • Genuine Associated OEM Component — This is an authentic Factory Team part, not an aftermarket alternative, ensuring perfect fitment and compatibility with your Associated shock bodies and maintaining the integrity of your suspension system.
  • Range of Coating Options Available — Associated offers both TiN (Titanium Nitride) and Factory Team Chrome versions of this shaft—the Chrome version AS91620 prioritises smoothest action, while TiN options are available for drivers seeking maximum shaft longevity.
  • Not Compatible with E-Clip Style Shafts — This screw-mounted design requires matching shock bodies with screw-secured piston design and cannot be mixed with E-clip retention systems, so verification of compatibility is essential before purchase.

Technical Performance

The Associated AS91620 shock shaft represents precision engineering at the component level. At 3mm diameter and 27.5mm stroke, this shaft is optimised for 1/10 scale platform vehicles including the RC10B5, RC10B5M, RC10T5M, B44.3 and compatible shock bodies AS91577 and AS91578. The Factory Team Chrome surface treatment is not merely cosmetic—it's a functional coating that reduces friction coefficient between the shaft and the internal seal geometry of the shock body. This reduction in friction directly translates to smoother damping curves, more linear response to suspension inputs, and more predictable handling characteristics during cornering, acceleration and braking. The V2 design evolution improves upon previous generations through refined piston mounting methodology and tighter tolerances that eliminate rattle and maintain consistent seal contact pressure throughout the suspension stroke cycle. Build quality is exceptional—this is a genuine Associated Factory Team component manufactured to the same standards as parts used in competitive racing environments. For UK RC car racers and serious hobbyists, this shock shaft represents the kind of marginal performance gain that matters in competition, where smooth suspension action can mean the difference between predictable, fast lines and unpredictable mid-corner behaviour. The screw-secured piston design provides positive lock-down that prevents the piston from loosening during high-frequency suspension movements or hard impacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between Factory Team Chrome and TiN coating options for Associated shock shafts? — Associated offers two coating options: Factory Team Chrome (AS91620, this product) prioritises the smoothest damping action through reduced friction, making it ideal for drivers who value responsive, predictable handling. TiN (Titanium Nitride) versions prioritise maximum shaft longevity and wear resistance, making them better for high-volume drivers or those running in abrasive conditions. The choice depends on whether you prioritise performance feel or durability—Chrome for racing enthusiasts, TiN for weekend bashers with heavy use patterns.
  • Which Associated vehicles use the 3x27.5 shock shaft? — This shaft is specifically designed for Associated RC10B5, RC10B5M, RC10T5M and B44.3 models, and is compatible with shock bodies AS91577 and AS91578. Always verify your shock body model number before purchasing to ensure compatibility, as other Associated models may use different shaft diameters or stroke lengths.
  • Can I use this shaft with E-clip style shock bodies? — No, this is critical: the AS91620 uses a screw-mounted piston design and is not compatible with E-clip style shafts or shock bodies. Attempting to use this shaft with E-clip retention systems will result in poor fitment and suspension failure. Verify your shock body design before installation.
  • Why does my Associated shock feel less responsive than it used to? — Worn shock shafts can develop surface degradation, scratches or corrosion that increases friction between the shaft and seal, reducing damping smoothness and consistency. Replacing a worn shaft with a new Factory Team Chrome version will restore the original smooth damping characteristics and responsiveness of your suspension system.
  • Is this a genuine Associated part or a clone? — This is a genuine Associated Factory Team component (AS91620), verified by the official part number. Purchasing from authorised UK retailers like RC Model Shop ensures you receive authentic OEM parts rather than counterfeit alternatives that may have inconsistent dimensions or poor surface quality.
  • Do I need to replace both front and rear shock shafts at the same time? — Best practice for suspension consistency is to replace shock shafts in pairs (front and rear) so both ends of your vehicle benefit from the same damping characteristics. However, if only one shock is damaged, replacing that single shaft is acceptable as an interim solution.
