Overview
The Team Associated AS81665 16mm Rear Springs represent a significant advancement in suspension tuning for competitive 1/8 scale RC buggy racing in the UK and beyond. These brown-coded rear springs are part of Team Associated's revolutionary new 1.5D wire range, specifically engineered to optimise the RC8B4.1 platform for ungroomed, lower-grip off-road tracks where consistent traction and bump handling are paramount. Whether you're competing at challenging venues like DNC or Silver State, or simply want to improve your RC car's performance on rough, bumpy terrain, these springs deliver the precision tuning that serious RC enthusiasts demand.
As part of ongoing 1:8 scale development, Team Associated identified that their previous generation 1.6mm wire springs performed excellently on high-grip, fast layouts but struggled to maintain consistent grip on ungroomed tracks. The engineering team recognised that changing the wire diameter to 1.5mm creates a different natural frequency and stress distribution on the wire, allowing the spring to compress and conform more readily to track surfaces in lower-grip conditions. This breakthrough innovation, combined with new softer spring rates, makes the 1.5D range ideal for UK RC enthusiasts seeking superior traction and reliability on challenging terrain.
This particular rear spring offers a 3.4 lb/in rate in brown colour coding, with an 83mm free length optimised for the updated lower shock towers on modern RC8B4.1 platforms. With colour markings on both ends to distinguish these springs from previous 1.6D wire options, trackside identification is quick and easy during competitive events or practice sessions.
Key Features
- 1.5mm Wire Diameter (1.5D) — The reduced wire thickness from the previous 1.6mm standard gives this spring a different natural frequency, allowing it to compress and conform more effectively to bumpy surfaces. This engineering advancement is crucial for maintaining traction on ungroomed tracks where lower grip levels demand superior suspension compliance.
- 3.4 lb/in Spring Rate — This softer rear spring rate sits within the new 1.5D rear lineup (ranging from 3.40 to 3.75 lb/in) and is positioned below the standard kit 3.7 lb/in pink spring. The 3.4 rating makes this ideal for drivers seeking maximum compliance on rough terrain without sacrificing stability.
- 83mm Free Length — Shortened from the previous 86mm standard, the 83mm free length is specifically optimised to work with the new lower RC8B4.1 shock towers, ensuring perfect geometry and suspension performance with your 16mm shock absorbers.
- Brown Colour Coding — The brown colour marking on both ends of the spring provides instant visual identification at the track, eliminating confusion between different spring rates and the older 1.6D generation. This trackside convenience is essential during competitive events where quick setup changes are needed.
- Tightly Grouped Specifications — With only 0.25 coil variation between springs in the 1.5D lineup, each spring is precisely manufactured to ensure consistent spring rates. This tight tolerance grouping allows drivers to fine-tune suspension performance to match exact grip levels and track conditions.
- Compatibility with 16mm Shocks — These rear springs fit standard 16mm shock absorbers on RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4, and older RC8 models, making them accessible to a wide range of competitive RC buggy drivers in the UK RC racing scene.
- Optimised for Lower-Grip Surfaces — The entire 1.5D range was developed specifically for ungroomed, bumpy tracks where traction is at a premium. The combination of reduced wire diameter and softer rates creates superior bump handling compared to previous spring generations.
Technical Performance
The Team Associated AS81665 rear spring represents the pinnacle of suspension engineering for competitive 1/8 scale RC buggy racing. The 1.5mm wire diameter delivers a fundamentally different stress distribution compared to conventional 1.6mm wire springs, resulting in improved compliance on rough, ungroomed surfaces. The 3.4 lb/in rate is positioned at the softer end of the new 1.5D rear range, making it ideal for drivers prioritising maximum traction and bump absorption over maximum cornering stiffness. At 83mm free length, this spring integrates perfectly with the newly optimised lower shock tower geometry of the RC8B4.1 platform, ensuring correct ride height and suspension travel without binding or excessive extension. The manufacturing tolerance of ±0.25 coils ensures that each spring maintains precise spring rate characteristics, essential for repeatable performance across multiple sessions and track variations. These springs are manufactured to Team Associated's exacting quality standards, with colour markings on both ends providing unmistakable identification and enabling quick setup adjustments during competitive events. The 1.5D technology addresses a genuine weakness in previous RC8 generations—their struggle to maintain consistent grip on rough, lower-grip terrain—making these springs a thoughtful engineering solution rather than a marketing gimmick.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between 1.5D and 1.6D springs? — The main difference is the wire diameter: 1.5D springs have a 1.5mm wire thickness compared to the previous 1.6mm standard. This reduced diameter creates a different natural frequency and stress on the wire, allowing 1.5D springs to compress and conform more effectively to lower-grip, bumpy surfaces. The 1.5D range also features shorter free lengths (83mm rear vs 86mm previously) to optimise geometry with new lower shock towers. Colour markings on both ends of 1.5D springs distinguish them from older 1.6D generations.
- Which RC buggy models are these springs compatible with? — These 16mm rear springs are designed for RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4, and older RC8 models. The 83mm free length is optimised specifically for the RC8B4.1 platform with its updated lower shock towers, though they will also fit other models using 16mm shock absorbers from the RC8 family.
- Why would I choose a 3.4 lb/in spring rate? — The 3.4 lb/in rate is the softest option in the new 1.5D rear spring range (which spans 3.40 to 3.75 lb/in) and sits below the standard kit 3.7 lb/in pink spring. Drivers should choose this rate when racing on ungroomed, lower-grip tracks where maximum suspension compliance and bump absorption are prioritised over cornering stiffness. The softer rate allows the rear suspension to conform more readily to track imperfections, improving traction and consistency.
- What does 0.25 coil variation mean for my setup? — Team Associated manufactures the 1.5D spring range with tight tolerances, maintaining only 0.25 coil variation between springs. This precision manufacturing ensures consistent spring rates across the range, allowing drivers to confidently mix springs in their front and rear suspension to achieve exact tuning without unexpected rate variations. This tight grouping is essential for competitive RC buggy racing where repeatable performance is crucial.
- Are these springs suitable for beginners? — Whilst these springs are engineered for competitive racing on ungroomed surfaces, they represent a replacement component rather than a complete suspension system. Beginners would need a complete RC8B4.1 buggy chassis, shock absorbers, and other components before these springs become useful. However, once you own a compatible RC buggy, these springs offer straightforward bolt-on tuning that any driver can use to improve performance.
- How do 1.5D springs improve performance on bumpy tracks? — Team Associated's testing revealed that previous 1.6mm wire springs struggled for consistent grip on ungroomed tracks. The 1.5mm wire diameter of the 1.5D range gives the spring a different natural frequency, allowing it to compress and conform to bumpy surfaces more effectively. Combined with softer rates in the front and rear, this creates superior traction and bump handling on rough terrain where grip levels are lower than groomed racing surfaces.
