Overview

The Team Associated 16mm Front Springs Green 4.85 lb/in represent a significant advancement in RC suspension tuning, specifically engineered for the RC8B4.1 platform and compatible with RC8B4 and older models. These high-performance springs are part of Team Associated's brand new 1.5mm wire diameter lineup, launched in June 2024 after extensive development by the A-Team. If you're serious about RC car performance in the UK and want to upgrade your suspension for ungroomed and bumpy track surfaces, these springs deliver the technical excellence that competitive RC enthusiasts demand.

Developed through rigorous testing at events such as DNC and Silver State, these springs address a critical performance gap that Team Associated engineers identified with their previous 1.6mm wire springs. The team discovered that whilst their existing springs excelled on high-grip, fast-prepared layouts, they struggled to maintain consistent grip on ungroomed surfaces where traction is at a premium. The solution was to redesign the entire spring range with a thinner 1.5mm wire diameter, fundamentally changing how the spring behaves under compression and stress. This innovation opens up new possibilities for RC enthusiasts across the UK who regularly compete on challenging, lower-grip tracks where bump handling and conformity to the surface are essential for winning performance.

These aren't just springs—they're the result of detailed 1:8 scale development work that understands the nuances of suspension geometry and track conditions. Whether you're a seasoned competitor looking to gain that competitive edge, or an ambitious hobbyist wanting to maximise your RC car's potential on difficult terrain, the AS81659 green springs offer precisely calibrated performance that makes a measurable difference in lap times and overall drivability.

Key Features

  • 1.5mm Wire Diameter (1.5D) Technology — The thinner wire profile compared to the previous 1.6mm standard gives the spring a completely different natural frequency and stress characteristics, allowing it to compress and conform more readily to ungroomed track surfaces where grip is lower. This engineering breakthrough means your RC car will follow the terrain more naturally, improving traction and reducing wheel slip on bumpy surfaces.
  • 4.85 lb/in Spring Rate — This medium-soft rate sits perfectly in the range of new 1.5D options (4.45 to 5.05 lb/in) and provides softer compliance than the standard kit white spring (5.1 lb/in). The green colour marking helps you quickly identify this specific rate in your spare parts collection.
  • 68mm Free Length — Shortened from the previous 70mm front spring specification to perfectly complement the lower RC8B4.1 shock towers introduced in the latest generation platform. This optimisation ensures ideal geometry and prevents binding, whilst maintaining proper suspension travel.
  • 8.0 Turn Count — The precise 8.0 turn count is engineered to deliver the exact spring characteristics needed for this rate and wire diameter combination, ensuring repeatable performance across multiple springs in your setup.
  • Tightly Grouped 0.25 Coil Variation — All springs are manufactured within 0.25 coil tolerance, meaning front and rear springs are tightly controlled for fine-tuning the rate to match exact grip levels. This precision manufacturing ensures consistent performance across both front wheels and allows you to make granular adjustments to your suspension tuning without guess-work.
  • Dual Colour-Marked Ends — Each spring is colour-marked on both ends, making identification quick and foolproof. This dual-end marking system distinguishes the new 1.5D springs from the previous 1.6D wire springs (which only had single-end marking), preventing accidental mixing of spring types in your pit box.
  • Ideal for Ungroomed Conditions — Specifically developed for the bumpy, lower-grip surfaces encountered at major events, these springs excel at gaining traction and improving bump handling where most competitors struggle. This makes them essential equipment for serious RC car racers in the UK.
  • Compatible with Multiple Platforms — Designed for 16mm shocks on RC8B4.1, RC8B4, and older Team Associated models, providing broad compatibility across the current and previous generation platforms.
  • Part of Complete System Design — These front springs work in concert with the matching 1.5D rear spring range (3.40 to 3.75 lb/in rates with 83mm length) to create a complete suspension package optimised for low-grip track conditions.

Technical Performance

The AS81659 green springs represent precision engineering at its finest, with every dimension carefully calculated to deliver performance gains on real-world RC tracks. The fundamental design change from 1.6mm to 1.5mm wire diameter alters the material stress distribution throughout the coil, enabling faster, more progressive compression characteristics that adapt smoothly to track irregularities. At 4.85 lb/in rate, these springs provide medium compliance whilst the 68mm free length ensures compatibility with the optimised RC8B4.1 shock tower design introduced in 2024. The 8.0 turn count combined with the thinner wire diameter creates a spring that maintains excellent durability under repeated compression cycles whilst delivering the consistency that competitive racing demands. The 0.25 coil variation specification is particularly important for discerning racers—it means whether you're installing the first spring or the fifth from the same batch, you can trust the performance to be virtually identical. This level of manufacturing precision is essential when you're tuning a competition RC car UK and making incremental adjustments to find the sweet spot for your local track conditions. The springs have been tested extensively by Team Associated's development team on the exact types of surfaces you'll encounter—ungroomed, bumpy terrain where most standard springs fail to maintain consistent contact with the track.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between 1.5D and 1.6D wire springs? — The 1.5mm (1.5D) wire diameter is thinner than the previous 1.6mm (1.6D) standard, creating a fundamentally different spring characteristic. The thinner wire changes the natural frequency and stress distribution, allowing the spring to compress and conform more readily to ungroomed track surfaces. This makes 1.5D springs ideal for lower-grip conditions where you need maximum traction and bump compliance. All 1.5D springs are colour-marked on both ends to distinguish them from 1.6D springs, which only have single-end colour marking.
  • Which Team Associated RC cars are these springs compatible with? — These 68mm front springs fit 16mm shocks on RC8B4.1, RC8B4, and older Team Associated models. They were specifically developed to work with the optimised lower shock towers on the RC8B4.1, so that platform benefits from the intended suspension geometry. The shorter 68mm length (compared to the previous 70mm) is optimised for these newer tower designs.
  • How do I choose between the different 1.5D spring rates? — Team Associated offers five different 1.5D front spring rates ranging from 4.45 to 5.05 lb/in: white 5.05 lb/in (AS81658), green 4.85 lb/in (AS81659), black 4.65 lb/in (AS81660), and brown 4.45 lb/in (AS81661). Choose softer springs (lower rate numbers like 4.45) if you need more compliance and bump absorption on particularly rough surfaces, or stiffer springs (higher rate numbers like 5.05) if you prefer a firmer, more responsive feel. The green 4.85 lb/in springs offer an excellent middle ground with softer compliance than the standard kit white spring.
  • What makes these springs better for ungroomed tracks? — The thinner 1.5mm wire diameter and softer rate options (all below the kit 5.1 lb/in white spring) work together to improve performance on bumpy, lower-grip surfaces. The spring can compress more readily and conform to track imperfections, maintaining wheel contact and traction where stiffer springs would bounce and lose grip. This is why Team Associated developed this lineup specifically after observing performance at DNC and Silver State events on ungroomed surfaces.
  • What is the 0.25 coil variation specification? — This means all springs in the batch are manufactured within 0.25 coil tolerance of each other. This extremely tight grouping ensures that when you install multiple springs in your setup, they all deliver virtually identical performance, eliminating inconsistencies that could unbalance your RC car. This precision is essential for competitive racing where even tiny variations in suspension can affect handling.
  • Are these springs available in other rates? — Yes, Team Associated offers a complete range of 1.5D front springs: white 5.05 lb/in, green 4.85 lb/in, black 4.65 lb/in, and brown 4.45 lb/in, all in 68mm length with 16mm shock compatibility. This gives you precise tuning options within the 1.5D range.
  • Why are these springs colour-marked on both ends? — The dual-end colour marking system distinguishes the new 1.5D springs from the previous 1.6D springs, which only had single-end marking. This prevents accidental mixing of spring types, which would result in unbalanced suspension performance. When you're at a race and need to quickly grab the right springs, the double marking is immediately obvious.
