Overview

The Team Associated RC8B4.1/e FT Rear Gearbox in carbon is a genuine Factory Team replacement component designed specifically for the RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e 1/8-scale electric off-road buggies. This carbon-constructed rear gearbox represents the latest generation of Team Associated engineering, incorporating hard material technology proven on their competition RC8T4 platform. Whether you're maintaining your existing buggy, upgrading from a standard gearbox, or building a race-ready setup, this Factory Team component delivers the precision and durability demanded by serious RC enthusiasts across the UK.

As a key drivetrain component in the RC8B4.1/e platform, the rear gearbox works in conjunction with Team Associated's innovative RWB/FWB adjustable weight bias chassis design to deliver exceptional traction and handling on ungroomed outdoor tracks. The RC8B4 series has established itself as a leading choice for competitive 1/8-scale electric RC buggy racing, and Factory Team parts like this gearbox are essential for maintaining peak performance or customising your setup for specific track conditions. If you're looking for quality OEM components for your RC car UK setup, this is a trusted option from an authorised Team Associated supplier.

This is a component part only and requires installation into your existing RC8B4.1 or RC8B4.1e buggy chassis. It is not a ready-to-run vehicle but forms a critical part of the drivetrain system that connects your motor power to the wheels through the differential and ring-and-pinion gears.

Key Features

  • Carbon Fibre Construction — The rear gearbox is manufactured from carbon fibre, providing an excellent balance of strength and weight reduction compared to standard materials, which helps keep your RC buggy's centre of gravity lower and improves overall handling characteristics.
  • Factory Team (FT) Specification — This is an official Factory Team component from Team Associated, the premium upgrade line that uses advanced materials and manufacturing techniques to deliver competition-grade durability and precision.
  • Hard Material Technology — The gearbox employs the same hard material construction used on the RC8T4 platform, ensuring the gears and internal components are engineered to withstand the stresses of high-speed competitive racing and rough terrain.
  • Large Bearing Sizes — The RC8B4 gearboxes feature 6x13x5mm flanged bearings as standard, which are significantly larger than typical designs and provide extended service life for both the bearings themselves and the ring-and-pinion gears.
  • 3.5 Degree Inclined Pinion Gear Angle — The rear gearbox incorporates a precisely engineered pinion gear angle that straightens the centre driveshaft, improving drivetrain efficiency and reducing mechanical phasing and vibration during acceleration and cornering.
  • Centrally Mounted Design — The rear gearbox mounting is positioned centrally within the chassis, allowing the rear brace to mount directly through it and offering multiple screw locations through the chassis to fine-tune chassis flex characteristics for different track conditions.
  • 44/13 Bevel Gear Compatibility — This gearbox is engineered to work with the 44-tooth ring gear and 13-tooth pinion bevel gear set, delivering a 3.38:1 internal gear ratio that provides optimal grip and smooth power delivery on ungroomed outdoor tracks.
  • Genuine Team Associated Part — Part number AS81653 is the official OEM component, ensuring perfect fitment and compatibility with RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e chassis, with proper tolerances for smooth operation.

Technical Performance

The RC8B4.1/e rear gearbox represents the culmination of Team Associated's engineering expertise in 1/8-scale electric buggy design. Manufactured from carbon fibre, this component combines lightweight construction with exceptional rigidity, which is critical for maintaining consistent performance across the full range of driving conditions. The hard material technology inherited from the competition RC8T4 ensures that internal gears and bearing surfaces are extremely durable, resisting wear even during extended competitive use. The 6x13x5mm flanged bearings are a significant engineering feature, as their larger diameter compared to standard designs distributes loads more effectively and dramatically extends the service life of the drivetrain. The precision-engineered 3.5-degree inclined pinion gear angle is particularly important for efficiency — by straightening the centre driveshaft, it reduces the mechanical losses that occur when power is transmitted through an angled driveshaft, resulting in improved energy delivery to the wheels and less vibration through the chassis during acceleration. The gearbox is designed around the 44/13 bevel gear set, which produces a 3.38:1 gear ratio optimised for the 92mm universal driveshafts and 17mm outdrives used in the RC8B4.1/e system. This ratio has been proven through extensive factory testing and driver feedback to deliver the right balance of acceleration and top-speed capability for contemporary ungroomed outdoor track layouts. The central mounting position of the gearbox allows it to function as an integral structural element, with the rear chassis brace mounting directly through it, which means its rigidity directly affects how the entire rear suspension responds to inputs. Build quality throughout is consistent with Factory Team standards, employing large-diameter, low-profile socket cap screws instead of traditional screw-and-washer combinations, which minimise fastener loosening and potential mechanical play.

What You Need to Complete

This is a component part designed for use as a replacement or upgrade gearbox in an existing RC8B4.1 or RC8B4.1e buggy. To install this gearbox, you will need the following items:

  • Existing RC8B4.1 or RC8B4.1e chassis (this gearbox is a replacement/upgrade component)
  • 44/13 bevel gear set (included with new buggy kits but may need separate purchase for upgrades)
  • 92mm universal driveshafts with 17mm outdrives
  • Appropriate silicone diff fluid for lubrication
  • Standard hex tools compatible with Team Associated components

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the RC8B4.1/e FT Rear Gearbox compatible with my RC buggy? — This gearbox is designed specifically for the Team Associated RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e 1/8-scale electric buggies. It will not fit other brands or older RC8B3 models. Check your chassis compatibility before ordering, as fitment is model-specific.
  • What is the advantage of a carbon fibre rear gearbox over the standard aluminium version? — Carbon fibre construction provides a significant weight saving compared to aluminium, which helps lower the overall centre of gravity of your RC buggy and can improve handling. The carbon material is also extremely rigid, ensuring accurate gear mesh and reducing flex that could cause drivetrain vibration or inefficiency.
  • What internal gear ratio does this gearbox provide? — With the standard 44/13 bevel gear set, this gearbox delivers a 3.38:1 internal gear ratio, which is optimised for ungroomed outdoor track racing with the RC8B4.1/e platform.
  • How does the 3.5-degree pinion angle improve performance? — The inclined pinion gear angle straightens the centre driveshaft, which reduces mechanical phasing (the side-to-side motion that occurs when power is transmitted at an angle). This improvement increases drivetrain efficiency, reduces vibration, and means more of your motor's power reaches the wheels instead of being lost to mechanical inefficiency.
  • Will this gearbox require any special maintenance? — You should keep the gearbox properly lubricated with silicone diff fluid appropriate for your climate and track conditions. The large 6x13x5mm flanged bearings are very durable, but bearing life will be maximised by regular maintenance and cleaning after wet or dusty track sessions.
  • Can I swap between Factory Team (FT) carbon and standard aluminium rear gearboxes easily? — Yes, both designs mount identically into the RC8B4.1/e chassis. However, the carbon fibre version is lighter, so switching will affect your vehicle's weight distribution and centre of gravity. The FT carbon option is generally preferred for competitive racing where every gramme counts.
  • What is the difference between this FT rear gearbox and the standard RC8B4 gearbox? — The Factory Team version uses carbon fibre construction instead of aluminium, reducing weight while maintaining rigidity. Both use the same hard material technology, large bearings, and 3.5-degree pinion angle design. The FT carbon option is the premium upgrade choice for racing applications.
