Overview

The Team Associated RC8B4 Spur Gear 48T Mod 1 Metal is a premium replacement spur gear designed for Team Associated RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 1/8-scale nitro-powered off-road buggies. This is an essential spare part for competitive racing and serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand precision engineering and reliability. Whether you're preparing for a championship event, tuning your setup for different track conditions, or simply replacing a worn component, this metal spur gear delivers the performance characteristics needed for high-level competition.

As part of Team Associated's extensive parts catalogue, the 48T spur gear is manufactured to exacting specifications using metal construction, ensuring durability and consistent power delivery across varied track conditions. The Mod 1 pitch specification ensures perfect compatibility with RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 drivetrain components, making this an essential upgrade and replacement option for racers and hobbyists alike. For RC enthusiasts in the UK seeking quality aftermarket parts and spares, this gear represents the genuine Team Associated quality you can trust.

The RC8B4 platform has been proven as a dominant force in international 1/8-scale buggy racing, with the 2022 IFMAR World Champion-winning design setting the standard for off-road performance. The RC8B4.1 evolution brought further refinements with lower centre of gravity, reduced weight, and improved handling on ungroomed outdoor tracks. Choosing the correct spur gear is fundamental to optimizing your buggy's performance, and this 48-tooth metal option provides the gear ratio tuning flexibility that competition-level drivers need.

Key Features

  • Metal Construction — Manufactured from durable metal material, this spur gear withstands the demands of competitive racing and high-speed acceleration better than plastic alternatives, providing longer service life and consistent performance through multiple race sessions.
  • 48-Tooth Configuration — The 48T tooth count is specifically engineered for RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 buggies, allowing drivers to fine-tune their gear ratio and adjust acceleration versus top-speed characteristics based on track conditions and racing strategy.
  • Mod 1 Pitch Specification — The Mod 1 (Module 1) pitch ensures precise meshing with the ring and pinion bevel gear sets supplied with RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 chassis, guaranteeing smooth power delivery and minimizing drivetrain noise and vibration.
  • Team Associated Genuine Part — As an official Team Associated component (part number AS81599), this spur gear is manufactured to the same exacting standards as components supplied with factory kits, ensuring quality and compatibility you can depend on.
  • Drop-In Replacement — This spur gear provides a like-for-like specification replacement when a 48T Mod 1 spur gear is required on Team Associated RC8B4 or RC8B4.1 builds, simplifying maintenance and setup adjustments.
  • Competition-Grade Engineering — Designed for racers who demand precision and reliability, this component reflects Team Associated's commitment to supporting competitive off-road racing at all levels, from club racing to international championships.

Technical Performance

The RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 buggies are engineered as 4WD, 1/8-scale nitro-powered machines with internal gear ratios of 3.38:1, designed for serious outdoor off-road racing. The spur gear works in conjunction with the 44/13 ring and pinion bevel gear sets that are standard on RC8B4.1 builds, which themselves are engineered using large bearing sizes of 6x13x5mm flanged bearings for extended component lifespan. By selecting the 48-tooth spur gear option, you are adjusting the overall drivetrain ratio to suit specific track conditions—a lower tooth count increases top-end speed whilst a higher tooth count like this 48T configuration emphasizes acceleration and mid-range torque delivery. The metal construction ensures the gear maintains its tooth profile under the extreme stresses of nitro engine power delivery, particularly during hard acceleration from standing starts and high-speed jumps where plastic gears would wear prematurely. Team Associated's engineering focuses on minimizing drivetrain phasing and vibration through precision manufacturing, and this spur gear contributes to that objective by maintaining perfect mesh geometry with the pinion gear. Whether you're running on high-grip oiled outdoor surfaces, sandy or dusty off-road tracks, or rough indoor dirt venues, having the correct spur gear specification is critical to extracting maximum performance from your RC8B4 or RC8B4.1 whilst protecting your drivetrain components.

What You Need to Complete

This is a replacement spur gear component and does not include a complete buggy. If you are building an RC8B4 or RC8B4.1 from scratch, you will need to acquire the complete chassis kit along with an engine, radio system, servos, receiver battery, fuel system, wheels, tyres, and all assembly hardware. For drivers looking to swap out an existing spur gear, this 48T option is a direct drop-in replacement assuming your RC8B4 or RC8B4.1 uses Mod 1 pitch gearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the 47T and 48T spur gear options for RC8B4 buggies? — The RC8B4.1 factory kit is supplied with a 47T machined spur gear as standard, configured for maximum grip and smooth power delivery on ungroomed outdoor tracks. The 48T option provides slightly more aggressive acceleration characteristics and may be preferred on higher-grip track surfaces where maximum acceleration is beneficial. Drivers typically test both specifications to determine which suits their particular track conditions and driving style best.
  • Is this spur gear compatible with both RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 models? — Yes, this 48T Mod 1 metal spur gear is compatible with both RC8B4 and RC8B4.1 chassis designs. Both models utilize Mod 1 pitch gearing and identical drivetrain geometry, making this a universal replacement option for either platform.
  • Why would I need to replace my spur gear? — Spur gears experience wear through normal racing and practice operation. Visible tooth wear, flat spots on the gear teeth, or noisy drivetrain operation when the engine is running typically indicate that gear replacement is needed. Additionally, drivers often swap between different tooth count gears to optimize performance for specific track conditions, making spare spur gears an essential part of a racer's toolkit.
  • Is the metal construction really necessary, or would a plastic gear work? — The metal construction is highly recommended for competitive driving and high-performance applications. Nitro engines produce significant power and acceleration forces that quickly wear plastic gears. The metal spur gear maintains tooth profile consistency, resists deformation under extreme loads, and delivers longer overall lifespan between replacements, making it the proven choice for serious racers in the UK and internationally.
  • What maintenance does this spur gear require? — The spur gear itself requires no special maintenance beyond visual inspection for tooth wear. Keep the gear mesh clean and free from fuel residue and dirt, and ensure the pinion gear is properly adjusted for correct mesh depth to prevent premature wear. Regular inspection during routine buggy maintenance will identify when replacement becomes necessary.
  • How do I know if this is the right tooth count for my racing? — The choice between different spur gear tooth counts (typically 46T, 47T, 48T, and 49T for RC8B4 variants) depends on your track conditions. Higher-grip surfaces and acceleration-focused driving favour higher tooth counts like this 48T option, whilst lower tooth counts emphasize top-speed capabilities. Most competitive drivers maintain several spur gears and test different ratios during practice to determine the optimal setup for championship events.
