Overview
The Associated Rear Springs V2 Grey 4.2 lb/in (AS81230) are genuine precision tuning components designed specifically for the RC8B3 series of 1/10 scale RC buggies. These colour-coded grey rear springs represent the V2 evolution of Associated's suspension engineering, offering competitive racers and enthusiast drivers an essential upgrade for fine-tuning rear-end performance. Whether you're dialling in your RC car UK setup for a specific track surface, adjusting for weather conditions, or simply exploring how suspension geometry affects your vehicle's handling characteristics, these springs deliver the controlled response needed for consistent lap times and predictable cornering behaviour.
As a genuine Associated spare part, the AS81230 springs embody the precision manufacturing standards you'd expect from one of the RC hobby's most respected manufacturers. The V2 design represents iterative improvements over previous generations, incorporating lessons learned from countless hours of competition and track testing. The distinctive grey colour finish makes it straightforward to identify your suspension setup at a glance, which proves invaluable when you're running multiple spring rates or comparing performance differences during trackside testing sessions. For RC enthusiasts in the UK looking to extract maximum performance from their RC8B3 platform, these springs are an absolute essential component for serious tuning work.
The 4.2 lb/in spring rate strikes a balanced middle ground in the Associated spring rate lineup, making it versatile across a range of track conditions and driving styles. This moderate rate provides sufficient rear-end support to maintain consistent traction through corners whilst remaining compliant enough to absorb track imperfections and maintain contact with uneven surfaces. Whether you're on tarmac, carpet, dirt, or mixed terrain, the 4.2 lb/in specification offers the flexibility needed for methodical suspension tuning and helping you discover the optimal setup for your specific driving environment.
Key Features
- Genuine Associated V2 Design — These springs incorporate the latest generation V2 engineering from Associated, representing the refinement of suspension technology through competitive racing and extensive track testing, ensuring you're getting authentic performance improvements.
- Precise 4.2 lb/in Spring Rate — The 4.2 pound-force-per-inch rate provides a balanced compromise between ride compliance and suspension stiffness, delivering controlled handling across diverse track surfaces whilst maintaining rear-end traction and support through aggressive cornering.
- Colour-Coded Grey Finish — The distinctive grey colour identification system makes it simple to track which spring rates you're running in your setup, eliminating confusion during trackside maintenance and helping you methodically log your suspension configurations.
- Rear Shock Application — Purpose-designed for rear shock use on the RC8B3 platform, these springs are engineered to work in harmony with the RC8B3's suspension geometry and damping characteristics for optimal performance integration.
- Broad Model Compatibility — Compatible across the entire RC8B3 family including the RC8B3, RC8B3.1, and RC8B3.2 variants, providing flexibility if you run multiple versions of this popular chassis.
- Essential Tuning Component — Perfect for competitive racers and serious hobbyists who understand that suspension tuning is fundamental to unlocking your RC buggy's true potential on track.
Technical Performance
The Associated AS81230 rear springs represent precision-engineered suspension components manufactured to exacting standards. The 4.2 lb/in spring rate delivers a specific stiffness characteristic that directly influences how your RC8B3 buggy responds to track inputs, bump absorption, and weight transfer during acceleration, braking, and cornering. This moderate spring rate sits in the sweet spot for general-purpose competition and hobby use, providing sufficient compliance to absorb track surface variations whilst maintaining the rear-end platform stability needed for consistent lap times. The V2 design incorporates material science and spring geometry refinements that translate to improved consistency, reduced performance variability, and more predictable handling transitions. These are genuine Associated components manufactured to the same quality standards as the chassis itself, ensuring that suspension tuning efforts deliver genuine, measurable performance improvements rather than placebo effects. The springs work in conjunction with your RC buggy's damping system (shocks and shock oil) to create a complete suspension package; adjusting spring rate is one half of the tuning equation, with damping characteristics forming the other half. UK RC enthusiasts understand that professional-level performance requires attention to these details, and investing in quality genuine spares like the AS81230 is how you systematically improve your RC car's performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between V2 and original Associated springs? — The V2 represents the second generation of Associated spring design, incorporating refinements based on competitive racing feedback and extensive track testing. The V2 design delivers improved consistency and performance characteristics compared to earlier generations, making it the recommended choice for current-generation RC8B3 buggies.
- How do I know if 4.2 lb/in is the right spring rate for my RC8B3? — Spring rate selection depends on your track surface (carpet, dirt, tarmac), driving style, and ambient conditions. The 4.2 lb/in rate is a popular middle-ground choice suitable for most conditions. Associated offers a range of spring rates; if your buggy feels too soft (rolling excessively in corners), try a stiffer rate; if it feels too stiff and bouncy, try a softer rate. Methodical testing of different rates is how you discover your optimal setup.
- Can I use these springs on other RC buggies? — These springs are specifically engineered for the RC8B3 platform and its shock geometry. Whilst the actual spring might physically fit other vehicles, you won't achieve proper performance integration. Always use suspension components matched to your specific chassis for best results.
- Do I need to replace both rear springs at the same time? — Yes, it's essential to run matching spring rates on both rear shocks. Mismatched rates will create handling imbalances and unpredictable weight transfer during cornering and acceleration. Always purchase and install springs in pairs.
- What tools do I need to install these springs? — Spring installation requires access to your RC8B3's rear shocks, which typically involves removing the rear body and accessing the shock mounts. You'll need basic tools like wrenches or Allen keys (depending on your shock design) and a workspace where you can safely work on your buggy. Always consult your RC8B3 manual for detailed disassembly instructions.
- Are these springs suitable for beginners? — These are genuine performance-tuning components intended for hobbyists who understand suspension principles and are actively working to optimise their RC buggy's handling. Beginners are welcome to use them, but you'll get maximum benefit if you also invest time in learning how spring rate affects handling characteristics and how to systematically test and compare different setups.
