Overview

The Traxxas 16-Tooth Pinion Gear (32-Pitch) 5 mm Bore is an essential performance tuning component for RC enthusiasts who want to maximise the potential of their Traxxas RC cars and trucks. Whether you're running a high-speed electric racer, a rugged RC monster truck, or any other Traxxas model with a 5mm motor shaft, this precision-engineered pinion gear lets you fine-tune acceleration and top speed to match your specific driving conditions and performance goals. As one of the UK's leading RC retailers, RC Model Shop stocks genuine Traxxas components that are engineered to exacting standards, ensuring reliability and durability every time you take your RC vehicle out for a run.

Changing your pinion gear ratio is one of the most effective and affordable ways to customise your Traxxas RC car's performance characteristics. By swapping to a different tooth count, you can shift the balance between blistering acceleration and maximum top speed—perfect for adapting your vehicle to tighter technical tracks, open-field racing, or recreational bashing. The 16-tooth configuration offers a mid-range option that works well across various driving scenarios. This genuine Traxxas part comes with everything you need for installation, including a set screw, making it simple to fit to your 5mm motor shaft without requiring additional tools or components.

For RC hobbyists in the UK seeking to upgrade or maintain their Traxxas fleet, this pinion gear represents excellent value and genuine quality. Traxxas pinion gears are manufactured to tolerances that ensure smooth engagement with your spur gear and reliable performance throughout extended running sessions, whether you're enjoying weekend bashings or competitive racing.

Key Features

  • 16-Tooth Configuration — This pinion provides a balanced gear ratio that works effectively across a wide range of Traxxas models and running conditions, making it an ideal choice for users who want a versatile, mid-range performance option without the extremes of very high or very low tooth counts.
  • 32-Pitch Specification — The 32-pitch gear standard ensures compatibility with the vast majority of Traxxas electric RC vehicles and guarantees precision meshing with compatible spur gears for smooth, efficient power delivery and minimal drivetrain wear.
  • 5mm Motor Shaft Bore — This bore size accommodates the 5mm motor shafts found on most Traxxas brushless and brushed motors, making this pinion suitable for numerous models across the Traxxas range including stadium trucks, buggies, and monster trucks.
  • Included Set Screw — The gear comes with a set screw that securely fastens the pinion to your motor shaft, preventing slippage during acceleration and ensuring consistent power transfer from motor to transmission throughout your running session.
  • Performance Tuning Capability — By changing your pinion gear ratio, you can optimise your RC car's performance for different track layouts and driving styles, allowing you to achieve either snappier acceleration for tight technical courses or higher top speeds for open racing areas.
  • Precision Engineering — Traxxas pinion gears are manufactured to exacting specifications, ensuring perfect tooth engagement with your spur gear, smooth operation, and extended component lifespan compared with lower-quality alternatives.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 16-Tooth Pinion Gear represents precision engineering at its finest for RC car gearing systems. This component is manufactured from durable materials capable of withstanding the constant rotational forces and power delivery demands placed upon it during aggressive acceleration and high-speed running. The 32-pitch specification is the industry-standard tooth profile used across most modern Traxxas electric RC vehicles, ensuring absolute compatibility and flawless meshing characteristics. The 5mm bore is precisely machined to provide a secure, wobble-free fit on standard Traxxas motor shafts, eliminating any potential for gear slippage under load. The included set screw provides positive mechanical locking, creating a rock-solid connection between pinion and motor shaft. For UK RC enthusiasts considering gearing changes, it's essential to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or contact our expert team at RC Model Shop, as different Traxxas models have different recommended gearing options. Swapping between tooth counts fundamentally alters your vehicle's performance envelope—fewer teeth increase top speed at the expense of acceleration, whilst more teeth deliver snappier acceleration with slightly reduced maximum velocity. The 16-tooth option strikes a well-balanced middle ground suitable for recreational driving and general purpose use.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why would I need to replace mine? — A pinion gear is the small gear mounted on your RC motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear in your transmission. Over time, pinion gears can wear out or become damaged through normal use, and replacing it restores smooth drivetrain operation. Additionally, many RC enthusiasts replace their pinion gears intentionally to change their vehicle's performance characteristics and adapt to different racing conditions.
  • How do I know what tooth count I need for my Traxxas RC car? — The recommended pinion tooth count for your specific Traxxas model is detailed in your vehicle's owner's manual. Different models have different optimal gearing ratios based on their motor, spur gear, and intended use. Before purchasing, we recommend checking your manual or contacting our RC Model Shop team for guidance on the best tooth count for your particular vehicle and driving style.
  • Will this pinion gear fit my Traxxas vehicle? — This 16-tooth pinion with 5mm bore and 32-pitch specification is compatible with most Traxxas electric RC vehicles that feature a 5mm motor shaft. However, compatibility varies by model, so always verify against your owner's manual before purchase. Our team can help confirm compatibility if you're unsure.
  • What is the difference between different tooth counts? — Pinion gears come in various tooth counts (typically ranging from 12 to 25 teeth). Lower tooth counts (12-16 teeth) increase your top speed but reduce acceleration. Higher tooth counts (18-25 teeth) provide snappier acceleration and lower top speed. The 16-tooth configuration offers a balanced, versatile middle ground suitable for most driving conditions and recreational use.
  • How do I install a new pinion gear? — Installation requires removing the motor from your vehicle, sliding the old pinion gear off the motor shaft, and sliding the new pinion gear onto the shaft. The included set screw then needs to be tightened securely to lock the pinion in place. Detailed installation instructions are typically found in your vehicle's assembly or maintenance manual. If you're unsure, our experienced team at RC Model Shop is happy to provide guidance.
  • Is this gear suitable for beginners? — Yes, this pinion gear is suitable for RC enthusiasts of all skill levels. It's a straightforward replacement component that requires no special knowledge to install, and the 16-tooth configuration offers balanced performance that works well across a wide range of driving styles and conditions, making it ideal for newcomers to the hobby.
