Key Features
- Complete Two-Shock Rebuild Kit — This kit contains all the necessary components to rebuild two complete shock absorbers, allowing you to perform a full suspension refresh on your RC vehicle in one go. Having both shocks rebuilt together ensures consistent damping characteristics across your suspension, which is essential for balanced handling and predictable vehicle dynamics.
- Premium X-ring Seals — The kit includes high-quality X-ring seals that provide superior sealing performance compared to standard O-rings. These premium seals deliver long-lasting smoothness and are engineered to resist oil leakage, keeping your shocks functioning reliably even during intense off-road sessions.
- Hard-Chrome Shafts — Designed to work with Traxxas Ultra Shocks, these hard-chrome shafts offer exceptional durability and a smooth finish that minimises friction and reduces wear over time. The chrome plating helps prevent corrosion and maintains the shaft's ability to seal properly with the X-ring seals.
- O-rings Included — The kit features replacement O-rings that are critical components of the shock sealing system. These consumable parts are the first items to wear out and require regular replacement to prevent oil leakage.
- Bladder Components — The bladder components (diaphragms) are included to replace worn units. These air-filled separators maintain consistent pressure inside the shock and are essential for proper shock operation and rebound characteristics.
- Piston Assemblies — New pistons are provided to restore proper damping characteristics. Even though pistons wear more slowly than seals, replacing them during a full rebuild ensures optimal shock performance and smooth compression and extension cycles.
- Shaft Guides — These precision-engineered components help keep the shock shaft properly aligned and stable during compression and extension, ensuring smooth operation and preventing binding or rough feel in the suspension.
- E-Clips — Multiple E-clips are included to secure the piston assembly on the shock shaft. These small but critical fasteners prevent the piston from coming loose during operation.
- Shock Caps — New shock caps are included to seal the top of the shock body and secure the diaphragm in place. These caps are essential for maintaining proper internal pressure and preventing oil leakage.
- Shock Rod Ends — The kit includes replacement rod ends (ball joints) that connect the shock shaft to your RC vehicle's suspension arms. Fresh rod ends ensure smooth articulation and eliminate play in the suspension linkage.
- Easy Dual-Cap Design — Traxxas Ultra Shocks feature a user-friendly dual-cap design that makes disassembly and reassembly straightforward. This thoughtful engineering means you don't need specialised tools or advanced technical skills to complete a successful rebuild at home.
- Compatible with Multiple Models — This rebuild kit is designed to work with a wide range of Traxxas vehicles including the Rustler, Slash, Stampede 2WD and 4WD models, and the Hoss 4X4. If you run multiple Traxxas RC cars, this versatile kit adds excellent value.
- Affordable Preventative Maintenance — Rebuild kits cost significantly less than replacing entire shock assemblies, making regular maintenance an economical way to extend the life of your RC suspension components and keep your vehicles performing at peak efficiency.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas Rebuild Kit TRX7662 is engineered specifically for Traxxas Ultra Shocks, which are the most common damper type found on Traxxas RC vehicles including their popular 2WD and 4WD off-road models. The premium X-ring seals and hard-chrome shafts work together to deliver exceptional sealing performance and durability. When properly rebuilt using this kit, Ultra Shocks will maintain smooth, consistent damping throughout the full range of compression and extension, providing the responsive handling characteristics that RC enthusiasts expect from Traxxas vehicles. The kit includes low-friction white spacers that sit between the X-ring seals, reducing friction and extending the service life of your rebuilt shocks. The dual-cap design allows for easy access to both the top and bottom of the shock assembly, making the rebuild process intuitive without requiring the removal of other suspension components. When refilled with appropriate shock oil (typically 20-80 weight silicone shock oil), properly rebuilt shocks will rebound to approximately one-third to one-half of full extension when compressed and released, which is the ideal behaviour for balanced suspension performance across track and trail conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- When should I rebuild my Traxxas shocks? — You should inspect your shocks regularly for signs of wear and rebuild them when you notice they are very wet where the shaft exits the body, have visible oil leakage, display scored, scratched, or bent shafts, or feel rough, lumpy, or not smooth when compressed with the spring removed. Shocks subjected to harsh terrain and dusty, gritty surfaces will wear seals out more rapidly than shocks used in smoother, cleaner conditions. It's good practice to rebuild all shocks together, even if only one or two seem to be in need, to ensure all shocks operate equally well and provide balanced suspension performance.
- Is shock rebuilding difficult for beginners? — The Traxxas Ultra Shock rebuild process is designed to be accessible to RC hobbyists of all skill levels. The dual-cap design and easy-access seals make disassembly straightforward, and the process is well-documented with step-by-step instructions. You don't need advanced mechanical knowledge, just basic tools like hex wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. Taking your time with each step, particularly when refilling and air-purging the shock, will result in a successful rebuild that restores your suspension to like-new performance.
- What type of shock oil should I use? — The rebuild kit works with silicone shock oil, with 30 weight being the standard choice. Traxxas also offers a 20-80 weight shock oil set (5038X) that includes multiple viscosities, allowing you to adjust damping characteristics to suit your driving style and terrain. The proper oil level is critical: fill until approximately 3mm below the top of the body with the shock extended, then cycle the shaft to release air bubbles before final filling to 1.5mm from the top.
- Will this kit work on all my Traxxas vehicles? — This rebuild kit is designed for Traxxas Ultra Shocks, which are used on the majority of Traxxas vehicles including the Rustler, Slash, Stampede 2WD and 4WD, and Hoss 4X4. It also works with Big Bore shocks, which use C-clips and clear spacers instead of the standard components. Check your vehicle's manual or specification sheet to confirm you have Ultra Shocks before purchasing, though these are by far the most common shock type in the Traxxas line-up.
- Can I upgrade my shafts during rebuild? — Yes, the rebuild process allows you to optionally upgrade to titanium-nitride coated hardened steel shafts if desired. These TiN-coated shafts reduce friction and extend wear life compared to standard shafts, making them an excellent upgrade option if you want maximum durability and smoothness. They are sold separately but can be easily installed during the rebuild process.
- How long does a shock rebuild take? — A complete rebuild of two shocks typically takes one to two hours, depending on your familiarity with the process and how carefully you work through each step. The most time-consuming part is properly refilling and air-purging the shocks, which requires patience but is essential for optimal performance. Having all tools and components organised before you start will help streamline the process.
- Can I rebuild shocks without removing them from my RC car? — For easiest access, most rebuilders prefer to remove the shocks from the vehicle first. However, the dual-cap design of Traxxas Ultra Shocks does allow for some work to be done with the shock mounted, such as diaphragm replacement. Complete rebuilds involving seal replacement and oil refilling are much easier to perform with the shock removed.
