Understanding spring rate and its role in suspension tuning is fundamental to getting the most from your RC model. The springs in your shock absorbers work in concert with damping force to create a suspension system that absorbs bumps smoothly, maintains traction, and prevents excessive body roll during cornering. These Traxxas springs are the result of meticulous engineering and testing to ensure they integrate seamlessly with the rest of your suspension setup.
Key Features
- Progressive-rate design — Unlike traditional fixed-rate springs, progressive-rate springs feature a design that allows small bumps and impacts to compress the spring with minimal resistance, providing exceptional small-bump compliance that improves ride quality on rough terrain. However, when the suspension encounters larger hits or landing jumps, the spring rate increases progressively, giving you the big-hit capability needed to protect your chassis and components from damage and bottoming out.
- Custom-wound engineering — Traxxas engineers have specifically wound these springs for your model, ensuring they work in perfect harmony with the shock absorbers and damping settings that come factory-installed on your RC vehicle. This level of customisation means you're getting springs that are matched to your specific model's weight distribution, suspension geometry, and intended use.
- Durable white powdercoat finish — The protective powdercoated finish on these springs provides resistance to corrosion, mud, and the general wear that comes from regular RC use. This ensures your springs maintain their appearance and structural integrity through countless bashing sessions and race days, whether you're driving on dry asphalt or wet grass.
- Colour-coded identification — Each spring rate comes with its own colour code, making it incredibly easy to identify which springs are installed in your shocks at a glance. This is invaluable when you're experimenting with different spring rates or when working with multiple vehicles, as you can quickly verify your setup without needing to measure or consult documentation.
- Sold in pairs — This package includes two springs as a matched pair, specifically designed for rear shock placement. Having a complete pair ensures consistent suspension geometry and performance across the rear axle, which is essential for maintaining balanced handling and traction.
- Multiple rate options — Traxxas offers these progressive springs in four different rates to suit any setup and driving style. You can choose springs that are 20% softer than stock, 10% softer, 10% stiffer, or 20% stiffer, giving you the flexibility to dial in your suspension precisely for your preferred handling characteristics.
Technical Performance
Spring rate is a critical suspension tuning parameter that represents the stiffness of a spring, measured in pounds per inch of compression. The greater the rate number, the stiffer the spring will be. Understanding this concept is essential when tuning your RC vehicle's suspension. A spring's stiffness directly influences how your vehicle responds to terrain, how it handles through corners, and how comfortably it rides over bumps. When springs and damping are properly matched, your suspension will support your vehicle's weight without being too stiff—which results in a bumpy, harsh ride and reduced traction due to the tyres losing contact with the ground—or too soft, which causes excessive chassis roll during cornering and makes the suspension prone to bottoming out when hitting large bumps or landing jumps.
The progressive-rate design employed in these Traxxas springs is a sophisticated engineering solution that addresses one of the fundamental compromises in suspension tuning. Traditional fixed-rate springs force you to choose between small-bump compliance and big-hit capability; you cannot have both. With a progressive-rate spring, the rate actually increases as the spring compresses more, meaning light impacts compress the spring easily with minimal resistance, whilst heavier impacts or larger compression distances experience progressively stiffer resistance. This technology allows your chassis to absorb small rocks, bumps, and undulations smoothly, maintaining traction and comfort, whilst still protecting your vehicle's chassis and components from damage when you land large jumps or hit substantial obstacles.
The damping characteristics work in tandem with spring rate to create a well-balanced suspension. Damping is created by a piston displacing oil within the shock cylinder—the more resistance the piston encounters, the greater the damping force. When properly tuned, your suspension will quickly compress to absorb a bump or jump landing, then extend to return to its normal position, and resist any further oscillation. If damping and spring rate are not well matched, you may experience packing up in bumpy terrain—where the suspension loses travel because the damping is too high for the springs to overcome—or excessive bouncing where the suspension keeps oscillating long after the initial impact. Traxxas carefully selects springs and damping settings for each model to provide versatile performance across all terrain types, but these progressive-rate springs allow you to fine-tune that balance to match your specific driving style and local track conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does progressive-rate spring design mean and how does it benefit my RC vehicle? — Progressive-rate springs are engineered so that their stiffness increases as they compress further. This unique design provides small-bump compliance—meaning light impacts and small undulations are absorbed smoothly without harsh vibrations—whilst simultaneously offering big-hit capability to protect your chassis and prevent bottoming out when landing jumps or hitting large obstacles. This represents a significant advantage over traditional fixed-rate springs, which force you to compromise between these two characteristics.
- How do I know which spring rate is right for my setup? — Traxxas offers four progressive spring rates: 20% softer than stock, 10% softer, 10% stiffer, and 20% stiffer. Your model's factory settings are always the best place to start, and from there you can experiment based on your terrain and driving conditions. If you're racing on smooth, high-grip surfaces, stiffer springs can improve handling and reduce body roll. For rougher terrain and looser conditions, softer springs provide better compliance and ground clearance. The key is adjusting and testing systematically to find what works best for you.
- Can I mix and match spring rates between front and rear? — Absolutely, and experienced RC tuners frequently do this. Many racers use different spring rates at the front and rear to achieve specific handling characteristics. For example, you might run softer springs at the front for better steering response and compliance, whilst using stiffer springs at the rear for stability. However, your model's stock settings are a good reference point, and it's recommended to make adjustments one step at a time to identify which changes produce the desired results.
- How does spring rate relate to damping, and why do they need to work together? — Spring rate and damping are fundamental partners in suspension tuning. If you increase damping beyond what the springs can quickly overcome, the suspension will pack up and lose travel in bumpy terrain, limiting your vehicle's ability to absorb impacts. Conversely, if damping is too light for your springs, the suspension will continue bouncing after each bump rather than settling quickly. Proper spring rate and damping matching ensures your suspension responds quickly to impacts, absorbs energy smoothly, and returns to its starting position without excessive oscillation.
- Will these springs work with my Traxxas model? — These springs are specifically designed as rear springs for Traxxas models. You should verify that TRX7457 is compatible with your specific vehicle model before purchasing. Traxxas provides detailed compatibility information for all suspension components, and RC Model Shop can advise you on whether these springs are suitable for your particular model.
- What is spring preload and how does it affect ride height? — Spring preload refers to the compression applied to the springs to support your vehicle's weight. All Traxxas models allow you to adjust ride height by adding spacers above the spring retainer or threading the spring retainer up and down the shock body. Adjusting preload changes the distance between your chassis and the running surface. Setting ride height close to the middle of suspension travel provides the best balance, allowing adequate up-travel for large hits and down-travel for drops and dips. Lower ride heights lower your centre of gravity for improved cornering, whilst higher settings provide better ground clearance on rough terrain.
- What colour is the code for these springs? — The TRX7457 rear springs come in white powdercoat finish with colour coding to indicate the rate. Each of the four available rates has its own colour code for easy identification: the softer rates are marked with orange (20% softer) and green (10% softer), whilst the stiffer rates are marked with blue (20% stiffer) and pink (10% stiffer).
- How do I maintain these springs? — These white powdercoated springs are designed to resist corrosion and wear through regular RC use. Simply rinse them with water after muddy sessions to remove dirt, and dry them thoroughly. The durable finish protects them from rust and discolouration, ensuring they maintain their appearance and structural integrity through countless hours of bashing and racing.
