Overview
The Traxxas 26-T Pinion Gear (48-pitch) Set (fits 2.3mm shaft) TRX7040 is an essential replacement component for RC enthusiasts maintaining and upgrading their Traxxas RC vehicles. Whether you're a dedicated basher pushing your RC car UK to its limits, a weekend racer fine-tuning performance, or an experienced hobbyist building a custom setup, pinion gears are critical drivetrain components that directly influence your vehicle's acceleration, top speed and overall performance characteristics. This genuine Traxxas pinion gear delivers the reliability and precision engineering you'd expect from the world's leading RC manufacturer, ensuring smooth power delivery and consistent performance lap after lap.
Pinion gears are the smaller of two meshing gears in your RC car's drivetrain, working in conjunction with your spur gear to transfer engine power to the wheels. The tooth count directly determines your vehicle's gear ratio, which fundamentally affects how your ready to run RC or custom build accelerates and reaches top speed. A 26-tooth pinion like this TRX7040 offers a balanced setup suitable for a wide range of driving conditions, making it an ideal choice whether you're running on-road circuits, off-road courses or mixed terrain. The 48-pitch specification ensures compatibility with other quality components in the Traxxas ecosystem, while the 2.3mm shaft diameter matches the motor shafts found in compatible Traxxas platforms.
When you choose genuine Traxxas components like this pinion gear, you're investing in quality manufacturing standards, precise tolerances and proven reliability. Traxxas has earned its reputation as the world's fastest-growing RC brand through consistent innovation and uncompromising attention to detail, and this pinion gear exemplifies that commitment to excellence.
Key Features
- 26-tooth pinion gear — The tooth count is precisely engineered to deliver balanced acceleration and speed performance, making this a versatile choice for standard driving applications across various Traxxas RC models and configurations.
- 48-pitch specification — This industry-standard pitch measurement ensures perfect mesh compatibility with matching spur gears and drivetrain components, critical for smooth, efficient power delivery without grinding, slipping or premature wear.
- 2.3mm shaft diameter — This specification precisely matches the motor shafts on compatible Traxxas vehicles, guaranteeing secure fitment and reliable torque transfer from your motor to the wheels without slipping or play.
- Genuine Traxxas engineering — Manufactured to exacting Traxxas standards using quality materials and production processes, this pinion gear delivers the precision and reliability expected from an authorised Traxxas component.
- Replacement and upgrade flexibility — Whether you're replacing a worn pinion gear or fine-tuning your RC car's performance characteristics by changing tooth count, this genuine component gives you the reliability to experiment with confidence.
- Set included — This package includes a complete set, giving you spare gears for maintenance, experimentation or building multiple configurations without the expense of separate purchases.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas 26-T Pinion Gear represents precision engineering where every dimension matters. At 48-pitch, this gear specification is one of the most common in dedicated RC applications, particularly for 1/10-scale and smaller vehicles where compact drivetrains are essential. The 2.3mm shaft diameter is specifically designed to interface with brushless and brushed motors found in the compatible Traxxas Slash 1:16 platform and related vehicles. Pinion gears undergo significant rotational forces during operation, so Traxxas manufactures these components from hardened steel or similarly durable materials to resist wear, stripping and failure. The 26-tooth count positions this gear as a moderate ratio choice — not extreme in either direction — making it suitable for balanced setups where you're not prioritising maximum top speed (which would require fewer teeth) or explosive acceleration (which would use more teeth). The engineering precision ensures minimal backlash when meshed with your spur gear, which translates to more responsive handling, better power transfer efficiency and reduced drivetrain noise. Quality pinion gears like this TRX7040 are considered wear items in RC racing, with regular inspection and replacement being part of routine maintenance schedules for competitive drivers and serious enthusiasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What vehicles is the Traxxas 26-T Pinion Gear TRX7040 compatible with? — This 48-pitch pinion gear with 2.3mm shaft is specifically designed to fit the Traxxas Slash 1:16 4x4 RTR Short Course Truck and other Traxxas vehicles that use the same motor shaft specification. Always verify your vehicle's motor shaft diameter before purchasing to ensure proper fitment.
- What does the tooth count mean and how does it affect performance? — The 26-tooth count is the number of teeth on the pinion gear that mesh with your vehicle's spur gear. Together, these two gears create a gear ratio that determines acceleration versus top speed. A 26-tooth pinion is considered a moderate, balanced choice suitable for general driving. Fewer teeth (like 24 or 25) would provide slightly more acceleration but lower top speed, whilst more teeth (like 27 or 28) would increase top speed but reduce initial acceleration.
- What does 48-pitch mean and why does it matter? — Pitch refers to the gear tooth spacing standard. 48-pitch gears have teeth spaced at a specific interval that must match your spur gear pitch for proper meshing. Using mismatched pitches will result in poor engagement, grinding noises, slipping, and rapid wear or failure. Always ensure your spur gear is also 48-pitch when upgrading or replacing pinion gears.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Pinion gears are considered wear items and their lifespan depends on driving frequency, driving style and maintenance. Competitive racers might replace them every few months of regular use, whilst casual bashers might get a year or more from a single gear. Regular inspection for chipped teeth, worn edges or bent teeth indicates when replacement is needed. Always inspect and replace the spur gear simultaneously, as worn spur gears create excessive load on the pinion.
- Is this a genuine Traxxas part? — Yes, the TRX7040 is an official Traxxas component manufactured to Traxxas specifications using quality materials and precision engineering. Purchasing genuine parts from authorised retailers like RC Model Shop ensures you receive authentic components with full warranty support and guaranteed compatibility.
- What tools do I need to install a pinion gear? — Installation requires a small hex wrench or Allen key to remove the set screw from your motor shaft, allowing you to slide off the old pinion gear and slide on the new one. Different motors use different set screw sizes (commonly 1.5mm or 2mm), so check your specific vehicle's manual. A small amount of threadlocker can help secure the set screw permanently.
