Overview

The Traxxas Gear, 20-T pinion (machined, hardened steel) (1.0 metric pitch) (fits 5mm shaft) with set screw is an essential performance tuning component for enthusiasts running Traxxas RC cars and trucks across the UK. Whether you're a seasoned racer fine-tuning your competition rig or a weekend basher looking to optimise your RC model's acceleration and top speed, this precision-engineered pinion gear gives you the control you need to match your driving style and terrain conditions. Traxxas pinion gears are recognised worldwide as the gold standard for performance upgrades in the RC hobby, and this 20-tooth variant is no exception. By changing your gear ratio with quality Traxxas components, you can strike the perfect balance between raw acceleration and maximum velocity, ensuring your RC car or truck performs exactly how you want it to in any running conditions.

This machined pinion gear is crafted from hardened steel, which means it's built to withstand the constant stresses and impacts of intense RC driving without stripping teeth or losing performance. The 5mm bore ensures perfect compatibility with standard Traxxas motor shafts, and the included set screw makes installation straightforward and secure. Whether you're racing on tarmac, bashing through grass, or tackling technical terrain, upgrading your drivetrain components with authentic Traxxas gears is one of the most effective ways to unlock your RC model's true potential.

For RC enthusiasts in the UK seeking to customise their Traxxas vehicles, this pinion gear offers an affordable yet high-impact upgrade that doesn't require extensive mechanical knowledge to fit. Simply consult your model's owner's manual to identify the recommended gearing options for your specific vehicle, and you'll be able to dial in the perfect performance characteristics in just minutes.

Key Features

  • Machined hardened steel construction — The gear is precision-engineered from hardened steel rather than softer materials, which dramatically increases durability and prevents tooth stripping during aggressive driving, hill climbing, or competitive racing, ensuring your investment lasts through countless hours of use.
  • 20-tooth configuration — This tooth count provides a balanced approach to gear ratios, allowing you to fine-tune your RC model's performance between acceleration and top speed depending on your running conditions and driving preferences.
  • 1.0 metric pitch (Mod 1) — The 1.0 metric pitch specification ensures compatibility with Traxxas drivetrain components and guarantees smooth, efficient power transfer from your brushless motor to the spur gear and ultimately to the wheels.
  • 5mm bore diameter — The 5mm shaft bore is the industry-standard size for Traxxas motor shafts, ensuring a perfect fit without modification and allowing quick gear swaps for performance testing and tuning.
  • Included set screw — The precision set screw is engineered to lock the pinion gear securely onto your motor shaft, preventing unwanted slippage during acceleration, braking, or cornering, which is critical for maintaining consistent drivetrain performance.
  • Performance tuning flexibility — By swapping different tooth count pinion gears, you can adjust your RC car's overall gear ratio to suit different tracks, weather conditions, and driving styles, making this a versatile tool for every RC enthusiast.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 20-T pinion gear represents the pinnacle of precision engineering for RC drivetrain components. Manufactured from hardened steel using precision machining processes, this gear delivers superior durability and longevity compared to plastic or softer metal alternatives commonly found in budget components. The 1.0 metric pitch specification, also known as Mod 1, is carefully engineered to mesh perfectly with Traxxas spur gears, ensuring smooth power delivery with minimal backlash and maximum efficiency. The 5mm bore diameter accommodates standard Traxxas brushless and brushed motor shafts, making this gear compatible with a wide range of RC cars, trucks, and buggies in the Traxxas lineup. When installed with the included precision set screw, the pinion gear locks securely in place, preventing rotational slippage that could compromise acceleration response and drivetrain consistency. The hardened steel composition ensures that even under the extreme stresses of high-powered brushless systems, competitive racing, or aggressive bashing, the gear teeth maintain their profile and engage cleanly with the spur gear. This technical excellence translates directly to more responsive handling, faster acceleration off the line, improved hill-climbing ability, and overall better performance for your RC model. By carefully selecting the appropriate pinion gear tooth count for your specific vehicle and driving conditions, you can optimise your RC car's performance characteristics to match your preferences and maximise enjoyment from your hobby.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does changing the pinion gear tooth count do to my RC car's performance? — The tooth count of your pinion gear directly affects your vehicle's overall gear ratio. A lower tooth count pinion (smaller gear) reduces the overall gear ratio, which increases acceleration and torque but reduces top speed. A higher tooth count pinion (larger gear) increases the overall gear ratio, which reduces acceleration but allows for higher top speed. The 20-tooth pinion provides a balanced mid-range option suitable for most driving conditions.
  • How do I know which pinion gear tooth count is right for my Traxxas model? — Your Traxxas model's owner's manual contains recommended gearing options for different running conditions and terrains. These guidelines help you select the ideal pinion tooth count for your preferred driving style, whether you prioritise acceleration for technical courses or top speed for open terrain.
  • What is the difference between a machined hardened steel pinion and cheaper plastic alternatives? — Machined hardened steel gears like this Traxxas component offer significantly superior durability, strength, and longevity compared to plastic gears. Steel gears resist tooth stripping, maintain their profile under extreme stresses, and provide consistent performance throughout their lifespan, making them essential for serious RC enthusiasts and competitive racers.
  • Will this pinion gear fit my Traxxas RC model? — This pinion gear features a 5mm bore diameter designed for standard Traxxas motor shafts. However, not all Traxxas models use the same shaft size, so you should verify that your specific model uses a 5mm motor shaft before purchasing. Consult your owner's manual or contact our knowledgeable team at RC Model Shop for compatibility confirmation.
  • What is the set screw and why is it important? — The precision set screw is used to secure the pinion gear onto your motor shaft, preventing rotational slippage during operation. Proper installation and tightening of the set screw is critical for maintaining consistent drivetrain performance and preventing damage to both the gear and motor shaft.
  • Can I use this pinion gear with any Traxxas spur gear? — This 20-tooth pinion with 1.0 metric pitch will mesh with any compatible Traxxas spur gear that uses the same 1.0 metric pitch specification. The tooth count of the spur gear determines your vehicle's overall gear ratio in combination with this 20-tooth pinion, so selecting the correct matching spur gear is important for achieving your desired performance characteristics.
