Overview
The Traxxas 17-Tooth Hardened Steel Pinion Gear with 5x6 GS (1pc) TRX6017 is an essential replacement component for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and performance from their RC cars. Whether you're running a Traxxas model truck, buggy, or other RC vehicle, this precision-engineered pinion gear is designed to deliver consistent power transfer and durability during intense off-road or on-road driving sessions. RC car UK owners trust Traxxas components for their proven engineering and longevity, and this hardened steel pinion is no exception.
Pinion gears are critical drivetrain components that mesh with the spur gear to transfer engine or motor power to the wheels, making them essential for maintaining top performance and reliability in any RC setup. The 17-tooth configuration offers a specific gear ratio that balances acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for various driving styles and terrain types. Whether you're a weekend basher enjoying outdoor RC adventures or a dedicated racer pushing your vehicle to its limits, having quality replacement gears on hand ensures you can keep your RC machine running at peak performance.
This single-piece Traxxas pinion gear comes ready to install as a direct replacement or upgrade component, offering RC model enthusiasts a straightforward way to maintain or fine-tune their drivetrain performance. The hardened steel construction provides superior strength and wear resistance compared to standard materials, extending the lifespan of your drivetrain and reducing the risk of gear stripping during aggressive driving or high-torque situations.
Key Features
- Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which provides exceptional durability and wear resistance, ensuring that your drivetrain can withstand the demands of intense RC driving sessions without premature tooth wear or failure.
- 17-Tooth Configuration — The 17-tooth count is engineered to provide a balanced gear ratio that works across multiple Traxxas models and driving applications, offering a good compromise between acceleration and top-end speed for both recreational and competitive use.
- 5x6 GS Specification — This pinion gear features a 5x6 GS fitting, which is a standard Traxxas specification that ensures proper meshing with compatible spur gears and reliable power transfer throughout your RC vehicle's drivetrain.
- Single Piece Supply — This pack contains one pinion gear, making it ideal for replacement purposes or as a backup component to keep in your RC spares box for quick repairs and maintenance.
- Direct Traxxas Compatibility — As an authentic Traxxas part, this pinion gear is engineered to exact specifications and integrates seamlessly with compatible Traxxas RC models, ensuring proper fit and performance without modification.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas 17-Tooth Hardened Steel Pinion Gear TRX6017 represents precision engineering in miniature drivetrain components. The hardened steel material undergoes specialist heat treatment to achieve superior hardness and toughness compared to standard pinion gears, allowing it to resist the shearing forces generated during acceleration, cornering, and high-speed driving. The 17-tooth count places this pinion in the mid-range of Traxxas gear options, providing versatility across different vehicle types and driving conditions. The 5x6 GS specification refers to the gear bore and shaft fitting dimensions, ensuring precise alignment and engagement with the corresponding spur gear in your vehicle's transmission. For UK RC car enthusiasts, this component represents the kind of quality engineering that has made Traxxas a household name in the RC hobby. The individual tooth profile has been meticulously designed to provide smooth engagement, minimal backlash, and efficient power transfer, whilst the hardened surface resists deformation and pitting that can occur under repeated load cycles. Whether you're using this as a replacement for a worn component or as an upgrade to your existing drivetrain, this pinion gear will maintain consistent performance throughout extended driving sessions and challenging terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need to replace it? — A pinion gear is a small gear in your RC vehicle's drivetrain that meshes with the larger spur gear to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. Over time, pinion gears can become worn, stripped, or damaged through normal use or aggressive driving, which reduces drivetrain efficiency and can cause grinding noises or loss of power delivery. Replacing a worn pinion gear with a quality Traxxas component like the TRX6017 restores performance and prevents further damage to your drivetrain.
- What does the 17-tooth count mean? — The tooth count on a pinion gear directly affects your RC vehicle's gear ratio and performance characteristics. A 17-tooth pinion offers a moderate gear ratio that balances acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for general-purpose RC driving on various terrains. Higher tooth counts (like 19T or 21T) provide more top speed but less acceleration, whilst lower counts (like 15T or 16T) deliver stronger acceleration but lower maximum speed.
- Is the TRX6017 compatible with all Traxxas models? — The TRX6017 is compatible with Traxxas models that use the 5x6 GS pinion specification. We recommend checking your vehicle's manual or the parts listing for your specific Traxxas model to confirm compatibility before purchasing. If you're unsure which pinion gear your vehicle requires, our experienced team at RC Model Shop can assist you in identifying the correct component.
- What is the 5x6 GS specification? — The 5x6 GS refers to the physical dimensions of the pinion gear's bore and shaft fitting. The 5mm shaft diameter and 6mm bore size ensure that the pinion gear fits precisely onto your vehicle's motor shaft and seats properly in the transmission case, allowing for efficient engagement with the spur gear and reliable power transfer.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Pinion gear replacement depends on your driving style and conditions. Recreational drivers might replace them every 12-18 months of regular use, whilst competitive racers or aggressive bashers may need replacements more frequently. Inspect your pinion regularly for signs of wear, chipping, or tooth damage. If you notice reduced performance, grinding sounds, or difficulty in gear engagement, it's time to replace the pinion.
- Why choose hardened steel over other materials? — Hardened steel pinion gears offer superior durability compared to softer materials or standard steel. The hardening process increases hardness and wear resistance, allowing the gear to withstand higher loads, resist deformation, and maintain its tooth profile through many hundreds of hours of driving. This translates to longer service life, better performance consistency, and ultimately better value for money.
