Overview
The Traxxas Springs, Rear (White) (progressive rate) (2 pcs) TRX5858 are precision-engineered suspension components designed to optimise the handling and performance of your RC vehicle. Whether you're a serious racer looking to fine-tune your setup or an enthusiast enjoying weekend bashing with your RC car or truck, these progressive rate rear springs are essential tuning parts that will directly impact how your model performs across different terrains. Available as a pair, these white-marked springs represent Traxxas's commitment to quality and precision engineering that has made them a trusted choice for RC enthusiasts throughout the UK and beyond.
Spring rate is one of the most fundamental aspects of suspension tuning in RC vehicles. The Traxxas Springs, Rear offer a progressive rate design, which means the spring stiffness increases as compression increases. This intelligent design provides a smoother initial ride quality whilst maintaining support during larger impacts and more aggressive driving. Understanding and optimising your spring rate is crucial for unlocking the full potential of your RC model, and these genuine Traxxas components are engineered to deliver consistent, predictable performance every time you take your vehicle to the track or the backyard.
These rear springs are compatible with several popular Traxxas models including the Mini Maxx BL-2S and Slash HD XL-5 1:10 2WD RTR Short Course Truck, making them an excellent upgrade or replacement option for owners of these vehicles. The progressive rate characteristic makes these springs particularly versatile, allowing drivers to achieve better performance across varying track conditions and driving styles without constantly swapping between different spring rates.
Key Features
- Progressive Rate Design — The springs feature a progressive rate characteristic, meaning the spring stiffness gradually increases as the spring compresses further. This design philosophy provides several performance advantages: the suspension responds smoothly to small bumps and normal cornering, whilst still providing adequate support during larger impacts, jumps, and aggressive driving. Progressive springs help eliminate the harshness of stiffer springs whilst avoiding the excessive body roll and bottoming-out issues associated with softer springs.
- Genuine Traxxas Engineering — Manufactured by Traxxas, these springs are engineered to the same exacting standards as the vehicles they support. Traxxas carefully chooses spring rates and damping settings specifically for each model, optimising for versatile performance across all types of terrain. When you choose genuine Traxxas components, you're investing in engineering expertise backed by years of RC racing and bashing experience.
- Colour-Coded Identification — The white marking on these springs makes them immediately identifiable and easy to distinguish from other spring rates in your spare parts collection. Traxxas uses colour coding throughout their suspension components to ensure drivers can quickly identify the correct springs for their setup, reducing confusion and ensuring you install the right parts every time.
- Pair Pack — This product contains two springs (one pair), providing both rear suspension points with matching components. Using a matched pair ensures consistent suspension behaviour across both sides of your vehicle, which is essential for balanced handling and predictable performance.
- Critical Suspension Component — Springs are one of the two essential parts of any shock absorber system, the other being the damper. The spring absorbs jolts, stores the energy, and releases it to return the suspension to its starting point. Without proper springs matched to your driving style and terrain, even the best damping settings cannot deliver optimal performance. These springs are a fundamental suspension tuning tool that directly affects ride quality, traction, cornering performance, and overall vehicle control.
Technical Performance
Understanding how these springs function within your RC suspension system is key to appreciating their value. In RC vehicles, all Traxxas shocks use the coil-over design—a coil spring placed over a damper—and these springs are engineered to work in harmony with the damping characteristics of your shocks. The spring rate, measured as the amount of force required to compress the spring one inch, directly influences how your vehicle responds to bumps, jumps, and cornering forces. Progressive rate springs like these TRX5858 components offer a sophisticated solution to the age-old suspension compromise: they provide a smooth, compliant ride over small bumps whilst maintaining adequate support during larger impacts.
When spring rate and damping force are properly matched to a car or truck, the suspension will support the vehicle without being too stiff (which results in a bumpy ride and reduced traction) or too soft (which results in excessive chassis roll and bottoming-out too easily). The relationship between spring rate and damping is crucial: if you've increased your shocks' damping beyond what the springs can quickly overcome, the shocks will "pack up" in bumpy terrain and limit suspension travel. Conversely, if the damping is too light, the suspension will bounce with each bump. These Traxxas springs are engineered to work within the carefully calibrated suspension systems of compatible models, ensuring that when installed on the correct vehicle, they'll deliver the balanced performance Traxxas designed into that platform. The white colour marking ensures you can easily identify the correct spring rate and maintain consistency across your suspension setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does progressive rate mean on RC springs? — A progressive rate spring has a stiffness that increases as the spring compresses further. Unlike linear springs that provide the same resistance throughout compression, progressive springs start soft to absorb small bumps smoothly, then become progressively stiffer as they compress more, providing better support during larger impacts. This design combines the best characteristics of both soft and stiff springs: smooth ride quality over small obstacles and resistance to bottoming-out during aggressive driving.
- Which Traxxas models are these springs compatible with? — These TRX5858 rear springs are specifically designed for the Traxxas Mini Maxx BL-2S (available in black, orange, green, and blue variants) and the Traxxas Slash HD XL-5 1:10 2WD RTR Short Course Truck (available in green, red, blue, and orange variants). Always verify compatibility with your specific model before purchasing, as using incorrect springs can negatively affect handling and suspension performance.
- Are these suitable for beginners? — Yes, these springs are suitable for beginners, particularly those who already own a compatible Traxxas model. Springs are fundamental suspension components that come pre-installed on all Traxxas vehicles at the factory. If you're experiencing handling issues, excessive bouncing, or bottoming-out, upgrading to a different spring rate (such as these progressive rate springs) is a straightforward tuning modification that doesn't require advanced mechanical skills. However, beginners should start with their model's factory spring settings before experimenting with alternatives, as the stock setup is optimised for general-purpose use across various terrains.
- How do I know if I need to change my springs? — Several signs indicate you might benefit from different springs. If your suspension constantly bobs up and down after hitting bumps (excessive oscillation), your current damping and springs may not be well-matched. If your vehicle bottoms out easily, you may need stiffer springs. If your ride feels too harsh and stiff, softer springs might help. If you're racing on particularly smooth or rough surfaces compared to your vehicle's designed purpose, or if you've significantly changed your driving style, experimenting with different spring rates can help optimise performance. Remember that Traxxas carefully optimises springs and damping settings for each model, so the factory settings are always a good starting point.
- What's the difference between progressive rate and linear rate springs? — Linear rate springs provide consistent stiffness throughout their entire range of compression, whilst progressive rate springs (like these TRX5858 components) gradually increase in stiffness as they compress. Linear springs are simpler and more predictable but force a compromise: they're either too soft for big impacts or too stiff for small bumps. Progressive springs elegantly solve this compromise by being compliant initially and stiffer under load, providing better overall performance across varying terrain and driving conditions.
- Do I need to change my damper (shock absorber) fluid when changing springs? — Not necessarily. Spring rate and damping are separate tuning parameters that work together. However, Traxxas recommends that spring rate and damping force be properly matched. If you're making a significant change to your spring rate, you may also need to adjust damping to maintain optimal performance. This can be done by changing shock piston openings (Traxxas Ultra Shocks use 2-hole or 3-hole pistons) or adjusting oil viscosity (most Traxxas models use 30-weight silicone oil, and you can adjust to different weights to fine-tune damping). If you're uncertain whether your damping matches your new springs, consult your model's tuning guide or contact an RC specialist.
- How often should I replace my springs? — RC springs don't wear out like damper oil does, but they can lose their rate over time through repeated compression. With normal recreational use, springs last for many months or even years. However, if you notice your vehicle handling differently than expected, springs may have lost their rate. Springs are also consumables in a racer's pit box—most serious competitors keep multiple spring rates available for different track conditions and will swap them regularly. For casual bashers, replacement is typically only needed when you want to tune your handling or when springs visibly lose their curve.
- Can I use these springs on other Traxxas models? — These springs are specifically engineered for the Traxxas models listed in the compatibility section. Using springs designed for a different model may result in poor handling, excessive body roll, bottoming-out issues, or an overly harsh ride. Traxxas designs each vehicle with specific suspension geometry, and springs are calibrated accordingly. Always verify compatibility before installation, and consult your model's manual if you're unsure whether these springs will work with your vehicle.
