Key Features

  • Real-Time Current Monitoring — The SBS-01S measures servo current draw up to approximately 10.0 amperes DC, allowing you to monitor electrical load and detect servo strain or mechanical binding before damage occurs. This is invaluable for identifying overloaded servos that could fail during critical manoeuvres.
  • Temperature Telemetry — Track servo temperature across a wide operating range from -10°C to 115°C, enabling you to identify overheating issues caused by continuous high-load operation, inadequate cooling or servo damage. Temperature monitoring prevents thermal shutdown and extends servo longevity.
  • Operational Status Feedback — Beyond raw current and temperature data, the sensor provides operational status information transmitted directly to your S.Bus2 compatible Futaba transmitter, giving you complete visibility of servo health throughout your flight, drive or operation.
  • S.Bus2 Protocol Integration — This sensor operates exclusively on Futaba's advanced S.Bus2 digital protocol, which offers superior data bandwidth and reliability compared to analogue systems. S.Bus2 telemetry integration means all data flows seamlessly through your existing radio link without requiring additional receivers or complex wiring.
  • Lightweight and Compact Design — At just 9.6 grams with a 300 mm (11.8 inch) connection lead, the SBS-01S adds negligible weight and bulk to your RC model whilst remaining durable enough for intensive use. The compact form factor makes installation straightforward in tight airframe or chassis spaces.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility — Operating across a voltage range of DC 3.7 to 7.4 volts, the SBS-01S is compatible with both 1S and 2S LiPo batteries as well as NiMH pack systems, making it suitable for a vast range of RC servo installations across different model types.
  • Professional-Grade Reliability — Manufactured by Futaba, a company that has been leading radio control since 1962, the SBS-01S embodies decades of engineering expertise and commitment to quality. This is not an experimental gadget but a proven telemetry solution trusted by serious RC pilots and racers.

Technical Performance

The Futaba SBS-01S represents the pinnacle of servo telemetry monitoring for modern S.Bus2 radio systems. With a maximum current measurement capacity of approximately 10.0 amperes DC, the sensor accurately tracks the electrical load flowing through your servo under all operating conditions, from light control inputs to full deflection under load. This capability is particularly valuable for RC car racers, helicopter pilots and fixed-wing aircraft operators who push their equipment to performance limits. The sensor's temperature measurement range from -10°C to 115°C covers virtually every real-world operating environment, from cold winter flying sessions in the UK to intensive high-speed racing in summer conditions. The sophisticated engineering behind the SBS-01S ensures that telemetry data is sampled at sufficient frequency and transmitted with the reliability that S.Bus2 protocol delivers, eliminating the data dropouts and inaccuracies that plague older analogue sensor systems. Construction quality is exceptional throughout, with robust connectors, reliable electronics and a weather-resistant design suitable for outdoor RC operation. The 300 mm lead length provides excellent routing flexibility whether you're installing the sensor in a compact 1/10 scale RC car, a mid-size RC truck buggy or an aircraft model. Operating voltage specification of DC 3.7 to 7.4 volts ensures compatibility across the full spectrum of modern RC power systems, from single-cell LiPo batteries through to dual-cell configurations and traditional NiMH batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is S.Bus2 and why does my telemetry sensor need to support it? — S.Bus2 is Futaba's advanced digital protocol for radio control, offering superior data transmission, reduced latency and the bandwidth necessary for comprehensive telemetry feedback. The SBS-01S uses S.Bus2 to transmit servo current, temperature and operational data from your RC model directly to your transmitter display. You must have a Futaba S.Bus2 compatible radio system with a receiver that supports telemetry to use this sensor; it will not work with conventional PWM or older digital protocols.
  • Can I use the SBS-01S with any servo? — The sensor is compatible with all S.Bus2 servos except S.Bus2 760 microsecond neutral servos, which use a different pulse width specification. This limitation affects only a small subset of servos, and the vast majority of modern Futaba S.Bus2 servos will work perfectly with the SBS-01S. Consult your servo documentation to confirm compatibility if you are uncertain.
  • How do I install the SBS-01S in my RC model? — Installation is straightforward: connect the sensor's 300 mm lead between your S.Bus2 servo and receiver, ensuring polarity is correct (typically marked on connectors). The sensor measures current and temperature as servo commands pass through it, transmitting data continuously to your S.Bus2 receiver and hence to your transmitter display. No additional power supply or configuration is required beyond ensuring your transmitter supports S.Bus2 telemetry display.
  • What is the maximum current the SBS-01S can measure safely? — The sensor is rated to measure approximately 10.0 amperes DC, making it suitable for monitoring standard RC servos. If you are operating extremely high-torque servos or digital servo arrays with combined currents exceeding 10 amperes, you may exceed the sensor's measurement range, though it will not be damaged by such overloads.
  • Will the SBS-01S work with my existing Futaba receiver and transmitter? — The sensor requires a Futaba receiver and transmitter that both support S.Bus2 telemetry. Most modern Futaba systems include this capability, but older radio gear may not. Check your transmitter manual for S.Bus2 telemetry support before purchasing this sensor.
  • How accurate is the temperature measurement? — The sensor monitors servo temperature across the range -10°C to 115°C, covering all normal operating conditions. Accuracy is engineering-grade, suitable for identifying thermal issues and preventing overheating, though the sensor is not a laboratory thermometer and should not be used for scientific temperature measurement.
  • Can I use multiple SBS-01S sensors on one RC model? — Yes, if your receiver supports multiple S.Bus2 telemetry sensors, you can install one on each servo (or each group of servos) to monitor multiple servo channels simultaneously. This advanced setup is useful for large aircraft or complex models where monitoring multiple critical servos is important.
  • What battery voltage does the SBS-01S require? — The sensor operates across DC 3.7 to 7.4 volts, accommodating both 1S LiPo (3.7V nominal) and 2S LiPo (7.4V nominal) batteries as well as NiMH packs. Power is derived from the servo line itself, so no separate battery connection is necessary.
