Technical Performance
The Traxxas GTR composite shocks represent the pinnacle of suspension engineering for 1/10-scale RC vehicles. The composite shell construction delivers a significant weight saving compared to traditional aluminium shocks, which directly improves your RC car's acceleration, deceleration, and overall responsiveness. The precision-engineered internal architecture includes a sophisticated piston design with strategically-drilled orifices that regulate oil flow during both compression and rebound strokes, enabling fine control over suspension stiffness and response characteristics. The factory-fitted volume-compensating bladders automatically adjust internal air volume as the shock moves through its range, maintaining consistent damping pressure and preventing the performance degradation that can occur with traditional open-chamber designs. These shocks are engineered with threaded bodies that allow endless length adjustment from a base setting of 96mm (end-to-end), permitting safe adjustment up to 98mm for additional fine-tuning. The X-ring seal system, pre-lubricated at the factory, provides a superior barrier against contamination whilst minimizing friction between the shock shaft and seal, resulting in smoother, more consistent suspension action. Shock oil viscosity dramatically affects damping performance, with lighter oils (15-25 weight) allowing faster suspension response on rough, bumpy tracks, whilst heavier oils (35-50 weight) provide more resistance and stability on smooth surfaces. The baseline recommendation for most UK track conditions is 30-weight oil in the front shocks and 25-weight in the rear, though individual preference and local conditions may warrant adjustment. The preload collar allows infinite ride height adjustment, which is critical for optimising chassis geometry and ensuring your vehicle maintains proper ground clearance over jumps whilst keeping the suspension operating within its optimal range. Together, these engineering features make the GTR composite shocks an exceptionally versatile platform for serious RC racers and dedicated hobbyists seeking maximum suspension tuning capability.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What viscosity shock oil should I use in my Traxxas GTR shocks? — Shock oil viscosity is critical to suspension performance. For most UK track conditions, Traxxas recommends starting with 30-weight oil in the front shocks and 25-weight in the rear shocks. Lighter oils (15-25 weight) allow faster suspension response on rough, bumpy surfaces, whilst heavier oils (35-50 weight) provide more resistance and stability on smooth tracks. Weather conditions also affect oil performance — hotter weather causes oil to feel thinner and allows faster shaft movement, so you may need slightly thicker oil on warmer days. Most serious racers stock oils ranging from 15-weight through 50-weight to cover all driving conditions they might encounter.
- Can I adjust the ride height and suspension stiffness easily? — Yes, the GTR composite shocks offer extensive tuning capability. Ride height is adjusted by threading the preload collar up or down on the shock body — simply adjust until the vehicle rebounds to your desired height on a flat surface. Never use shock length to adjust ride height, as this creates unpredictable handling. Suspension stiffness is adjusted by changing shock oil viscosity (lighter oil = softer feel, heavier oil = firmer feel) or by selecting different spring rates. The threaded shock bodies also allow minor length adjustments of up to 2mm for fine-tuning down travel without changing mounting position.
- Are these shocks suitable for both racing and casual bashing? — Absolutely. The GTR composite shocks are incredibly versatile and work exceptionally well for both competitive racing and casual weekend driving. Their lightweight construction and responsive damping characteristics make them ideal for racing applications, but their durability and resistance to abuse make them equally suitable for rough, high-impact bashing. Many UK RC enthusiasts use the same shocks for both purposes, simply adjusting spring rate and oil viscosity to match their current driving style and venue.
- What is the difference between composite and aluminium GTR shocks? — The primary differences are weight and durability. Composite GTR shocks are significantly lighter than aluminium versions, which improves your vehicle's acceleration, handling, and overall response. This weight saving is particularly beneficial for 1/10-scale vehicles, which are much lighter than larger-scale models and benefit substantially from suspension weight reduction. Composite shocks are also exceptionally durable despite their lighter weight, offering excellent abuse resistance. Traxxas notes that the stock composite GTR shocks withstand plenty of abuse whilst delivering superior performance compared to heavier alternatives.
- Do these shocks come with springs? — No, the TRX9360 is sold without springs. This allows you to select the exact spring rate that matches your vehicle weight, driving style, and local track conditions. Traxxas offers eight different spring rates for their shock systems, ranging from very soft options for bumpy, slick tracks through to firmer options for high-speed, jump-heavy circuits. The threaded shock bodies accept all standard Traxxas spring options, giving you complete freedom to dial in your suspension precisely.
- How do I assemble and maintain these shocks? — These shocks arrive fully assembled and ready to install on your vehicle. Maintenance is straightforward — periodically check that X-rings remain lubricated and seal properly, and refresh the shock oil if it becomes contaminated or discoloured. When rebuilding shocks, always pre-lubricate X-rings with shock oil before installation, pre-lube the shock bladder before threading the cap to prevent tearing, and fill the shock body nearly to the top with your chosen oil. Move the shaft slowly to release air bubbles, then thread the cap carefully until oil seeps from the bleed hole. Hold the shock at an angle with the bleed hole facing upward to help air escape during assembly.
- What spring rates should I choose for my local UK track? — Spring selection depends heavily on track surface and personal preference. For rough, bumpy tracks, softer springs allow more suspension travel and improved traction, making them easier to drive and providing more time to correct the vehicle when it gets out of shape. For smooth tracks or those with large, high-speed jumps, firmer springs help prevent the chassis from bottoming out excessively. Traxxas offers eight spring rate options, with most competitive racers finding that softer springs work particularly well for off-road racing in typical UK conditions. Remember that if you change spring rates, you may also need to adjust shock oil viscosity to maintain optimal damping characteristics.
- Can I use these shocks on different vehicle types? — These GTR composite shocks are designed specifically for 1/10-scale stadium trucks and compatible Traxxas vehicles such as the Jato and Revo. Whilst the basic design is shared across multiple models, fitment and performance may vary on other vehicle types. Check your specific vehicle's manual to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
