Overview

The Traxxas Big Bore Shocks (X-Long) (2 pcs) TRX2661 represent a significant upgrade for anyone serious about RC car performance and handling. Whether you're running a Traxxas RC monster truck, stadium truck, or other compatible platform, these professionally engineered suspension components deliver the damping control and reliability that separates competitive racers from casual bashers. Big bore shocks are a recognised upgrade path for RC enthusiasts across the UK who want to fine-tune their vehicle's suspension geometry and response characteristics without replacing their entire platform.

These shocks are engineered with serious attention to detail and built using high-quality materials that withstand the demanding world of RC racing and bashing. If you're looking to upgrade your RC car's suspension in the UK, or you're a seasoned competitor preparing for the next event, the Traxxas Big Bore Shocks provide the performance foundation you need. The X-Long variant is specifically designed for models that require extended suspension travel, making them ideal for buggies, trucks, and high-performance RC vehicles that demand responsive handling and consistent performance across varied terrain.

Available now from RC Model Shop, these genuine Traxxas components come pre-assembled, which means you can get straight to upgrading your RC car setup without spending hours on workshop preparation. The shocks arrive ready to install, saving you time and reducing the chance of assembly errors that could compromise performance.

Key Features

  • Hard-anodised Shock Bodies — The shock cylinders are hard-anodised, which is a specialised surface treatment that significantly increases durability, wear resistance, and corrosion protection compared to standard aluminium. This treatment ensures your shocks will withstand thousands of impacts and repeated use without degrading, making them a long-term investment in your RC car's performance.
  • PTFE-Coated Cylinders — PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating applied to the shock cylinders creates an ultra-smooth surface that reduces friction during compression and extension cycles. This coating is crucial for maintaining consistent damping performance throughout your driving sessions and extends the lifespan of internal seals and pistons.
  • Large Cylinders for Greater Oil Capacity — The big bore design features significantly larger diameter shock cylinders compared to standard shocks. This larger volume allows for more shock oil to be stored, which improves heat dissipation during intense driving, provides more stable damping characteristics, and reduces the likelihood of performance loss due to oil temperature changes during extended use.
  • Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated Shock Shafts — The internal shock shafts feature an advanced titanium nitride coating that provides exceptional hardness, low friction properties, and extended wear resistance. TiN coating is the same technology used in precision racing components and ensures smooth piston movement throughout the full range of suspension travel while resisting scoring and wear that could cause oil leakage.
  • Super Smooth Long-Wearing Shafts — Combined with the TiN coating, these shafts are engineered for smooth operation and durability, meaning your suspension will maintain consistent performance lap after lap, whether you're racing competitively or bashing casually at the local RC track.
  • Clip-On Spring Pre-Load Spacers — Adjustments are quick and intuitive thanks to the clip-on spring pre-load spacers. Rather than requiring disassembly or special tools, you can modify the spring pre-load by simply attaching or removing spacers. This feature is particularly valuable for racers who need to make suspension adjustments between heats or for bashers who want to dial in their setup for different driving conditions without specialist knowledge.
  • Pre-Assembled and Ready to Install — These shocks arrive fully assembled and tested from the factory, eliminating the need for time-consuming assembly work. You won't need to worry about properly seating internal components or achieving correct oil levels—simply remove them from the box and install them on your RC car. This significantly reduces installation time and ensures every component is correctly configured from day one.
  • X-Long Variant for Extended Suspension Travel — The X-Long specification provides extended shock length, which is essential for vehicles designed with longer suspension geometry. This allows for greater vertical suspension travel, better ground clearance articulation, and improved bump absorption when driving over rocky terrain, jumps, or rough ground typical of RC bashing and racing in the UK.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas Big Bore Shocks TRX2661 represent serious engineering excellence designed to meet the demands of competitive RC racing and enthusiast-level bashing. The hard-anodised aluminium construction combined with PTFE coating creates a surface treatment approach that reduces stiction (static friction) and maintains consistent damping performance even after thousands of compression cycles. The large bore design—a hallmark of premium shock engineering—provides approximately 40-50% greater oil capacity than standard shocks, which is critical for thermal stability during extended driving sessions on hot days or during back-to-back races. The titanium nitride coating on the shock shafts operates at a hardness level comparable to diamond, which means these components can withstand millions of piston strokes without visible wear. The 2-piece configuration means you're receiving a pair of shocks (front and rear, or for dual-shock setups), providing complete suspension performance across your RC vehicle's wheelbase. Build quality is evidenced by the precision engineering required to achieve the smooth operation and durability these shocks are known for, and they integrate seamlessly with Traxxas vehicles that accept this shock specification. Whether you're running 2WD or 4WD models, or whether your RC car is a stadium truck, buggy, or monster truck configuration, these shocks deliver the controlled damping response that separates consistent lap times from erratic handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Traxxas RC models are compatible with the TRX2661 Big Bore Shocks X-Long? — The TRX2661 is specifically designed for Traxxas models that require X-Long shock specifications. Check your vehicle's manual or specifications to confirm compatibility, as Traxxas produces different shock variants for different models. These are commonly used in larger platform RC vehicles and models designed with extended suspension geometry. If you're unsure whether these shocks are correct for your specific RC car, the expert team at RC Model Shop can help identify the right suspension components for your setup.
  • What is the difference between standard shocks and big bore shocks? — Big bore shocks feature significantly larger diameter cylinders than standard shocks, which provides several critical advantages. The larger volume allows for greater oil capacity, which improves heat management during intense driving, provides more stable damping across temperature variations, and typically delivers smoother, more progressive suspension response. The hard-anodised and PTFE-coated construction of these big bore shocks also reduces friction and wear compared to standard shocks, extending component lifespan and maintaining performance consistency.
  • Why are the shocks pre-assembled? — Traxxas ships these shocks fully assembled to save you time and reduce potential assembly errors. Shock assembly requires precision to ensure correct oil levels, proper piston seating, and correct internal component alignment. Factory pre-assembly eliminates these variables and ensures every shock meets Traxxas quality standards from the moment you receive it. This allows you to move directly to installation rather than spending hours in workshop preparation.
  • How do I adjust the spring pre-load on these shocks? — The TRX2661 features convenient clip-on spring pre-load spacers that allow quick adjustments without tools or disassembly. You simply clip spacers onto the shock shaft above the spring to increase pre-load, or remove them to decrease pre-load. This makes it easy to fine-tune suspension stiffness for different track conditions, weather, or driving styles, and allows competitive racers to make adjustments between heats.
  • What makes the titanium nitride coating important? — Titanium nitride (TiN) is an advanced ceramic coating that provides extraordinary hardness—second only to diamond—and exceptional low-friction properties. On shock shafts, TiN coating prevents scoring, wear, and metal-to-metal contact that could compromise the seal integrity and cause oil leakage. The smooth, hard surface ensures consistent piston movement throughout millions of compression cycles, maintaining predictable damping response throughout the lifespan of the shocks.
  • Are these shocks suitable for RC racing in the UK? — Yes, these are professional-grade suspension components used by competitive RC racers across the UK. The big bore design, hard-anodised construction, and TiN-coated shafts are specifically engineered for high-performance racing applications where consistency and reliability are paramount. Whether you're competing in stadium truck racing, buggy racing, or other RC racing formats, these shocks provide the suspension performance characteristics needed for competitive driving.
  • Can I use these shocks for bashing and casual RC car use? — Absolutely. While these shocks are suitable for racing, they're equally effective for enthusiasts who enjoy bashing and recreational RC car driving. The durable construction and advanced surface treatments mean they'll provide consistent performance whether you're driving casually or competitively, and they'll likely outlast standard shocks if you're driving regularly.
  • What is the difference between the X-Long and other shock length variants? — The X-Long specification provides extended shock length to accommodate vehicles with longer suspension geometry. This allows for greater vertical travel, better ground clearance when articulating, and improved bump absorption. If your Traxxas RC vehicle is designed for extended suspension geometry, the X-Long variant is essential for achieving correct ride height and suspension performance. Standard or XXL variants may be available for different platform requirements.
