Key Features
- Chromium Steel Construction — Manufactured from chromium steel rather than standard steel, this pinion gear offers exceptional durability and strength under the stresses of acceleration, braking, and cornering, ensuring your drivetrain can handle aggressive driving without premature wear or tooth damage.
- Corrosion-Resistant Black Finish — The black chromium coating provides excellent protection against rust and corrosion, particularly important if you regularly run your RC car in wet conditions or store it in humid environments, maintaining the gear's appearance and functionality over time.
- M0.5 Module Pitch — The 0.5 module pitch is specifically engineered to work seamlessly with M0.5 spur gears, ensuring perfect meshing angles and minimal backlash for smooth, efficient power delivery and reduced noise during operation.
- 2.3mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — Designed with a 2.3mm bore to fit brushed motors with 2.3mm shafts, this pinion is a direct replacement for ARRMA Grom-series vehicles and other RC cars using this standard motor shaft diameter, making installation straightforward and hassle-free.
- Direct OEM Replacement — These gears are engineered as direct replacements to the stock brushed Grom pinions, meaning you can swap them out with confidence knowing they'll work perfectly with your existing spur gear without any modifications or compatibility issues.
- Included M3 x 4mm Set Screw — Each pinion comes with a quality M3 x 4mm set screw, ensuring you have all the hardware needed for secure installation onto your motor shaft without having to source additional fasteners.
Technical Performance
The RC Overhaul Pinion 20T represents a significant upgrade over standard pinion gears in terms of material science and engineering precision. The chromium steel construction provides a hardness rating that exceeds typical brass or mild steel alternatives, resulting in reduced gear wear, longer service life, and more consistent performance across extended driving sessions. The 20-tooth configuration, combined with the M0.5 module pitch, delivers optimal gear ratios for mid-range speed and acceleration characteristics, making this pinion ideal for general-purpose RC car use rather than extreme speed or crawling applications. The 2.3mm bore diameter is manufactured to tight tolerances, ensuring a secure fit on motor shafts with minimal play whilst still allowing easy installation and removal. The black finish isn't merely cosmetic; the chromium coating provides a sacrificial layer that protects the underlying steel from moisture and oxidation, crucial for maintaining precision and preventing corrosion in the UK's variable climate. When paired with a matching M0.5 spur gear, this pinion creates smooth engagement with minimal backlash, reducing drivetrain noise and improving overall efficiency. Whether you're running your RC car on tarmac, grass, or dirt tracks, this pinion gear will maintain consistent performance and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the RCO Pinion 20T compatible with my ARRMA Grom RC car? — Yes, this pinion is specifically designed as a direct replacement for stock brushed Grom pinions across the entire ARRMA Grom range, including the Granite GROM, Typhon GROM, Mojave GROM, Gorgon GROM, and Quake GROM models. If your vehicle uses a 2.3mm motor shaft and M0.5 gearing, this pinion will fit perfectly without any modifications.
- What is the difference between the 20T pinion and other tooth counts? — The number of teeth on a pinion gear directly affects your vehicle's gearing ratio and performance characteristics. The 20-tooth configuration offers a balanced compromise between top speed and acceleration; lower tooth counts (like 18T or 19T) will increase top speed but reduce acceleration, whilst higher tooth counts (22T or 24T) will boost acceleration at the cost of top speed. Choose based on your driving style and track conditions.
- Why is chromium steel better than standard steel for RC gears? — Chromium steel is harder and more wear-resistant than standard steel, meaning the teeth will maintain their profile longer and deliver more consistent performance over time. The added durability means fewer replacements, better meshing with your spur gear, and ultimately a more reliable drivetrain that can handle aggressive driving without premature failure.
- How do I install this pinion gear on my motor shaft? — Simply slide the pinion gear onto your 2.3mm motor shaft until it reaches the desired position, then use the included M3 x 4mm set screw to secure it firmly against the shaft. Ensure the set screw is tightened properly to prevent the pinion from slipping during operation, but avoid over-tightening which could damage the motor shaft.
- Will this pinion work with my existing spur gear? — Yes, provided your spur gear is also M0.5 module pitch, this pinion will mesh smoothly with it. The M0.5 specification ensures compatibility across all gears with the same module rating, giving you flexibility to mix and match components from different manufacturers.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on driving intensity, track surface, and maintenance practices. With quality chromium steel like this RCO pinion, you can expect significantly longer life than stock gears. Regular inspection for tooth damage or wear will tell you when replacement is needed; typically high-volume bashers might replace gears every 50-100 hours of use, whilst casual drivers might go much longer.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. If you own an ARRMA Grom-series RC car, upgrading to this quality aftermarket pinion is one of the smartest investments a beginner can make. It's a straightforward swap that requires minimal mechanical skill, and the improved durability means you'll spend less time on repairs and more time enjoying your RC car.
