Technical Performance
The Hobbywing XERUN 17.5T G4R represents a significant leap forward in brushless motor engineering for 1/10th scale RC racing. With a 3150KV rating and 2-pole configuration, this sensored brushless motor delivers 213 watts of maximum power output with a peak current of 49.4 amps. The motor draws just 4.6 amps at no-load, demonstrating exceptional efficiency from the moment you apply throttle. The 17.5T winding specification strikes the perfect balance between acceleration and top speed for competitive stock class racing, whether on tight indoor carpeted tracks or faster outdoor facilities. Built to work with 2-3S LiPo battery packs, the motor maintains consistent performance across the typical 7.4V to 11.1V operating range that racers rely on. The physical dimensions—35.8mm outer diameter, 51.4mm length with a 3.175mm shaft diameter—ensure perfect fitment in any 1/10th scale stock class chassis. At just 148 grams, the motor maintains an ideal weight distribution for balanced handling and stability. The precision-engineered bearings (D9×D4×T4 front and D8×D3×T4 rear) combined with Hobbywing's proprietary rotor heat dissipation design ensure the motor runs cool even during extended racing sessions or multiple heats. The internal resistance is substantially lower than comparable motors, meaning more of your battery's energy translates directly into acceleration and top speed rather than being wasted as heat. This efficiency gain is particularly noticeable in close racing situations where every fraction of a second counts. The G4R platform has been proven in thousands of competitive racing environments across the UK and worldwide, making it the trusted choice for anyone serious about stock class success.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Hobbywing G4R 17.5T motor suitable for beginners or only advanced racers? — While the G4R is engineered for competitive racing, it is not overly complex for intermediate RC enthusiasts with some experience. The motor is sensored, which provides smooth, linear power delivery that newer drivers will appreciate. However, proper ESC tuning and racing technique are needed to fully exploit the motor's capabilities. If you are brand new to RC cars, you might start with a simpler brushless setup, but the G4R becomes an excellent choice once you have a few months of driving experience.
- What battery does the Hobbywing XERUN 17.5T G4R motor need? — The motor is designed to work with 2-3S LiPo battery packs, meaning either a 2S pack (7.4V nominal) or a 3S pack (11.1V nominal). The 3S configuration will provide more power and speed, whilst 2S offers slightly longer runtime and easier handling for newer drivers. You will need a dedicated LiPo battery charger, as these batteries require specific charging protocols for safety and longevity.
- How does the G4R 17.5T compare to other 17.5T competition motors? — The Hobbywing G4R shows measurable improvements over competing 17.5T motors of the same specification. The new stator and rotor design deliver up to 7% more speed and 9% more power under identical test loads compared to popular non-Hobbywing alternatives. The internal resistance is lower, efficiency is higher, and heat dissipation is superior, all whilst maintaining full compliance with IFMAR and EFRA spec class rules. The G4R platform simply extracts more performance from the same winding specification.
- Can I use this motor in 1/12th scale cars as well as 1/10th? — This particular standard version (HW30401748) is optimised for 1/10th scale stock class racing. However, the G4R 21.5T variant is rated for both 1/10th and 1/12th scale applications. For 1/12th racing, you would be better served by the higher-turn variants rather than the 17.5T.
- What makes the G4R heat management superior to previous generation motors? — The combination of the open core can design, optimised rotor heat dissipation (which is a patent design), and the higher temperature-rated enamelled wire all work together. The open core can allows direct cooling of the stator by airflow, whilst the can and rotor geometry maximises internal airflow. The new rotor design includes a large opening heat dissipation structure at the motor tail specifically to cool the sensor components. These features work together to reduce temperature rise and maintain consistent internal resistance during extended racing.
- Is this motor legal for ROAR competition? — This is the standard version, designed and certified for IFMAR and EFRA rules. It is legal for IFMAR and EFRA sanctioned events. For ROAR competition, you would need the ROAR version (HW30401745), which uses thermally conductive winding epoxy for even greater heat dissipation and marginally lower operating temperatures. Always check your specific event rules before competing.
- What ESC should I pair this motor with? — Hobbywing recommends pairing the G4R motor with the XeRun XR10 G3 ESC for optimal performance and compatibility. This ESC-motor combination has been engineered and tested together to ensure perfect power delivery, smooth acceleration curves and reliable sensor communication. Whilst other quality ESCs will work with the motor, the XR10 G3 is the proven choice for maximum performance.
- Can I replace the rotor with a stronger magnetised version? — Yes, the motor is supplied with a standard rotor (part number 30820450) suitable for most blinky competition applications. An optional stronger magnetised rotor (part number 30820407) is available separately and is recommended for medium and large track blinky competitions or high-traction track applications where maximum torque is beneficial.
