Technical Performance
The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo represents a significant engineering achievement in compact trail crawling. The brushed motor design provides reliable, high-torque power delivery that excels at low-speed crawling where brushless motors can struggle with throttle control. The 130 motor size, paired with the dual-ratio transmission, enables extreme low-speed crawl capability through the 98:1 first gear ratio, dropping to a manageable 24.5:1 second gear for faster running on flatter sections. Full internal metal gearing throughout the transmission and portal axles ensures durability and allows future motor upgrades (180, 240 or 270 size) without risking gearbox failure. The transmission's reverse rotation of the rear driveshaft minimises chassis torque twist, improving stability during extreme articulation. The integrated 4-channel ESC/RX combination delivers responsive control with particular emphasis on smooth low-speed throttle response, crucial for precision crawling work. Water resistance to PPX 4 standard provides reasonable protection for splashing and wet conditions, though submersion should be avoided. The aluminium rail chassis offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, whilst the 1.2mm thick painted lexan body provides authentic scale appearance with genuine durability. Runtime of up to 45 minutes on the included 600 mAh 2S LiPo battery provides practical session lengths, with the included USB charger enabling field recharging. The redesigned weight bias, placing heavier components further forward and lower in the chassis, significantly improves articulation and crawling performance compared to earlier models.

This dual-mode flexibility ensures the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo remains responsive and capable across varied environments, giving users full control over torque and pace without compromising drivetrain integrity.
Why are portal axles critical for small scale crawlers?
Front and rear portal axles on the FTX FTX5484S elevate the axle housing above the wheel centreline, significantly increasing ground clearance. This design allows the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo to traverse rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces without snagging or bottoming out. The portal configuration also contributes to reduced torque twist, thanks to the reverse rotation of the rear driveshaft. Combined with the low centre of gravity and forward-biased weight distribution, the portal axles make the FTX 1/18 Unitrak crawler a formidable performer in tight, technical trail conditions.
What makes the aluminum rail chassis ideal for off-road use?
The aluminum rail chassis of the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Unitrak provides a rigid and lightweight backbone for the entire vehicle. This structural integrity ensures minimal flex under load, maintaining consistent suspension geometry and drivetrain alignment. The chassis layout also supports the front-mounted motor and panhard bar steering system, contributing to the low centre of gravity and tight turning radius of 80cm. Whether navigating steep inclines or side-hill traverses, the aluminum rails deliver the durability and stability required for confident off-road exploration.
How does the oversized 130 brushed motor improve torque delivery?
Equipped with a 130 size 100T brushed motor, the FTX FTX5484S Outback Mini XP Evo offers sustained torque output for demanding crawl scenarios. This motor size is oversized relative to typical 1/18 scale platforms, allowing for longer run times and improved throttle response. The motor pairs seamlessly with the high torque transmission and metal gear internals, ensuring reliable power delivery without overheating or gear slippage.
