As a UK RC hobbyist, you'll appreciate the quality engineering that Hobbywing brings to every component they manufacture.
Pinion gears are critical drivetrain components in RC cars, responsible for transferring power from your brushless motor to the main transmission. The Hobbywing Steel Pinion ensures smooth power delivery and precision gear mesh, making it an essential upgrade or replacement part for any serious RC car UK enthusiast. This particular model features 23 teeth and is specifically engineered to work with 48-pitch gear systems, making it compatible with a wide range of popular RC platforms.
Hobbywing has built a reputation as one of the leading manufacturers of RC electronics and components, and this pinion gear reflects their commitment to quality and precision. Whether you need a replacement after wear and tear or you're optimising your RC car's performance, this steel pinion delivers the reliability you expect from an authorised retailer's stock.
Key Features
- Steel Construction — This pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which provides superior durability and longevity compared to standard plastic alternatives, ensuring your RC car UK setup maintains consistent performance through multiple racing seasons and casual bashing sessions.
- 48-Pitch Specification — The 48P specification ensures compatibility with a wide range of popular RC car platforms and transmission systems, making this a versatile choice for builders and enthusiasts looking to upgrade or replace worn components.
- 23-Tooth Design — The 23-tooth configuration offers an optimal balance between acceleration and top-end speed, providing the right gear ratio for general-purpose driving across various RC car types and terrains.
- 5mm Bore — The 5mm bore diameter fits standard motor shafts found on most brushless RC motors, ensuring a secure and reliable fit that transmits power efficiently without slippage or binding.
- Precision Engineering — Hobbywing's manufacturing standards ensure that every pinion gear is cut to exact specifications, delivering smooth mesh with your main gear and eliminating the vibration and noise associated with inferior alternatives.
Technical Performance
The Hobbywing Steel Pinion 48P 23T represents the kind of precision engineering that separates quality RC car UK components from budget alternatives. Steel construction provides exceptional durability, resisting wear and deformation even under the high-stress conditions of competitive racing or aggressive bashing. The 5mm bore is engineered to fit standard brushless motor shafts precisely, ensuring zero play and maximum power transfer from your motor to the transmission system. This pinion gear works in conjunction with your RC car's main gear to establish the overall gear ratio, which directly affects acceleration, top speed and overall drivability. The 23-tooth specification strikes a balanced approach, neither sacrificing too much acceleration for speed nor limiting top-end performance. Hobbywing's commitment to manufacturing consistency means every tooth is cut to the same exacting standard, resulting in smooth, quiet operation and reduced wear on the main gear and differential components. For RC car UK enthusiasts running brushless setups, this replacement pinion ensures that power delivery remains consistent throughout your driving sessions, whether you're navigating technical courses or high-speed carpet racing.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need one? — A pinion gear is a small toothed wheel mounted directly on your RC motor shaft that meshes with the main gear to transfer power from the motor to the transmission. The pinion is essential to your RC car's drivetrain, and replacing a worn pinion can dramatically improve performance and restore smooth power delivery that degraded over time.
- Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion is designed for RC cars with a 5mm motor shaft bore and a 48-pitch gear system. You'll need to verify that your RC car uses these specifications before purchasing. Check your user manual or the specifications of your brushless motor and transmission to confirm compatibility.
- What's the difference between steel and plastic pinions? — Steel pinions offer superior durability, longer lifespan and more consistent performance compared to plastic alternatives. Whilst plastic pinions may be lighter and more affordable, steel gears resist wear far better under high-speed racing conditions and aggressive driving, making them the preferred choice for serious RC car UK enthusiasts.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Replacement frequency depends on how often you use your RC car and the intensity of your driving. Competitive racers might replace pinions every few months, whilst casual bashers may only need replacements once or twice yearly. Monitor your pinion for visible wear, teeth damage or signs of slippage.
- Is this pinion suitable for beginners? — Yes, this pinion is an excellent choice for any RC car UK enthusiast, regardless of experience level. Whether you're just starting out with your first brushless RC car or you're an experienced competitor, this Hobbywing component delivers the reliability and performance you need.
- Does this pinion require special tools to install? — Installation typically requires a hex key or Allen wrench to remove the motor from your RC car and secure the pinion to the motor shaft. Most RC enthusiasts have these basic tools on hand, and installation is straightforward for anyone with basic RC mechanical knowledge.
