Key Features
- 230mm length with 56 bright LEDs — The 230mm dimension is precisely engineered to fit Axial SCX6 roof mounting points, whilst the 56 individual bright LEDs provide exceptional illumination across a wide field of view, making this ideal for low-light trail running and night-time RC car UK sessions.
- Receiver-powered design for simple integration — Rather than requiring a separate battery or complex wiring harness, this light bar draws power directly from a spare port on your receiver, meaning minimal installation complexity and a tidy, integrated setup that doesn't compromise your RC crawler's weight distribution or centre of gravity.
- Complete mounting kit included — The package contains everything needed for installation: the 230mm LED light bar itself, purpose-designed mounting brackets, and all necessary hardware to securely fasten the bar to your SCX6 shell, eliminating the need for separate purchases or improvised mounting solutions.
- Weather-resistant construction suitable for trail use — Designed to cope with the damp conditions encountered during outdoor RC car UK trail running, the light bar is engineered to resist moisture ingress, though it should be allowed to dry completely if it does get wet to prevent internal damage.
- Quick installation via small shell aperture — Setup requires only drilling a small hole in your SCX6 shell for the power lead to pass through, then connecting the lead to a spare receiver port—a task achievable in minutes without requiring any complex modifications or permanent shell damage.
Technical Performance
The RC Overhaul Roof LED Light Bar represents solid engineering optimised specifically for SCX6 platforms and similar scale RC crawler applications. With 56 individual bright LEDs arranged across the 230mm length, the light bar delivers meaningful illumination without the excessive power draw that would compromise your receiver's battery life or create voltage sag issues during extended running sessions. The receiver-powered design is particularly clever—by drawing power directly from your receiver's available channels, you avoid the need for dedicated batteries, complicated wiring harnesses, or additional battery management systems. This approach keeps your SCX6's weight distribution centred and prevents the battery imbalance problems that can arise from mounting heavy auxiliary components on the roof. The mounting brackets have been engineered to work with standard SCX6 shell configurations, though RC Model Shop recommends verifying your specific shell dimensions and mounting points before installation. The 230mm dimension suits the standard SCX6 wheelbase proportions, creating an aesthetically pleasing appearance that looks scale-appropriate on 1/6 crawlers. Build quality is solid throughout—the LED elements themselves are proven components with excellent reliability records in the RC lighting market, and the bracket assembly uses quality materials designed to withstand the vibration and occasional impacts inherent to trail running. The power lead is adequately shielded to prevent damage during installation and normal use, and the connector is designed to plug securely into standard receiver spare ports without requiring any soldering or modification.

Installation and Compatibility
Installation of the RC Overhaul Roof LED Light Bar requires minimal tools and technical skill. Begin by identifying a suitable location on your SCX6 shell roof—the 230mm length is designed to sit centred on standard SCX6 platforms. You'll need to drill a small hole to allow the power lead to pass through to the receiver compartment below. This hole should be positioned to avoid any existing internal components and ideally located where the lead can run neatly along the inside of your shell without creating kinks or pinch points. Once the hole is drilled, the mounting brackets can be secured to the shell using the supplied hardware—typically self-tapping screws or similar fasteners depending on your shell material. Position the light bar so it's level and balanced front-to-back on your SCX6, which usually means centring it relative to the wheelbase. The power lead simply plugs into any spare port on your receiver—most Spektrum receivers and similar standard receiver types have available channels after binding steering and throttle servos. If you're uncertain about spare ports on your specific receiver, RC Model Shop's team can advise you when you order. Once connected, the light bar will illuminate immediately when your receiver powers up, requiring no additional setup or programming. The installation is designed to be non-permanent—if you need to remove or reposition the light bar later, you can do so without causing lasting damage to your shell or internal components.
Care and Maintenance
The RC Overhaul Roof LED Light Bar is designed for outdoor trail use but does require basic care to maintain reliability. After wet running sessions, allow the light bar to dry completely before operating again—this is important because whilst the bar is moisture-resistant, water ingress into the LED elements themselves could cause electrical failures. If you notice dampness around the light bar after running in damp conditions, stop operation immediately and allow it to dry naturally indoors. Store the RC crawler with the light bar in a dry environment when not in use. The mounting brackets and hardware are corrosion-resistant but will benefit from occasional inspection, particularly if you run regularly in wet terrain. The power lead should be checked periodically for any signs of damage or loose connections at the receiver port—a firm, secure connection is essential for reliable operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the RC Overhaul Roof LED Light Bar suitable for beginners installing their first upgrades? — Absolutely. The installation process is straightforward, requiring only basic tools (a small drill bit and a screwdriver), no soldering, and minimal technical knowledge. The receiver-powered design eliminates complex wiring, making this an ideal first upgrade for someone new to modifying their SCX6. RC Model Shop's team can provide installation guidance if needed.
- How much power does the light bar draw from my receiver, and will it affect flight time? — The 56 LEDs are engineered to draw minimal current from your receiver's spare channel port—typically in the region of a few hundred milliamps, which represents a negligible impact on your receiver's battery life or voltage stability during a running session. You won't notice any performance degradation in steering or throttle response.
- Can I use this light bar on other Axial crawlers or just the SCX6? — Whilst the 230mm bar and mounting brackets are specifically engineered for SCX6 platforms, some users with closely related Axial models (such as certain SCX6 variants) have reported successful installation. However, RC Model Shop recommends verifying your specific model's shell dimensions and mounting point spacing before purchase, as fitting to non-SCX6 platforms may require modification.
- What happens if the light bar gets wet during trail running? — The light bar is designed to resist light moisture exposure typical of trail running, but if it becomes noticeably damp, stop operation and allow it to dry completely indoors before using again. This prevents water inside the LED elements from causing short circuits or LED failure. Drying typically takes a few hours under normal room conditions.
- Do I need to buy additional batteries or charging equipment for this light bar? — No. The receiver-powered design means the light bar draws power from your receiver's internal battery, the same battery that powers your steering servo and receiver electronics. No separate batteries, chargers, or power management equipment is required.
- Will 56 LEDs provide enough light to meaningfully improve visibility when running at dusk or in low-light conditions? — Yes, 56 bright LEDs deliver substantial illumination—enough to significantly improve your ability to see the terrain ahead and spot obstacles during low-light trail running. The light output is comparable to real vehicle auxiliary lighting systems, making it effective for dusk sessions and night running. Actual perceived brightness will depend on your LED colour (typically white or bright white on this model) and the ambient light level.
- Is the light bar waterproof, and can I run in rain? — The light bar is moisture-resistant and designed for typical outdoor trail conditions including light rain and damp terrain. However, it's not fully submersible or waterproof to extreme depths—extended exposure to heavy rain or water crossings should be avoided. Always allow the bar to dry completely after wet running sessions.
