Overview
The AXIAL Pinion Gear 48P 13T with steel 2.3mm shaft is an essential replacement and upgrade component for RC car enthusiasts across the UK. Whether you're maintaining your existing RC model, tuning for competitive performance, or building a custom RC car setup from scratch, this precision-engineered pinion gear delivers the reliability and performance that serious hobbyists demand. Axial has built a reputation as one of the leading manufacturers of RC components, and this pinion gear exemplifies their commitment to quality engineering and durability in the RC hobby.
Pinion gears are critical drivetrain components that directly affect your RC car's acceleration, top speed, and overall performance characteristics. The 13-tooth configuration provides a specific gear ratio that works in harmony with your spur gear to deliver the right balance of speed and torque. This is particularly important whether you're running a rock crawler, short-course truck, buggy, or any other RC vehicle type where gear selection can make the difference between sluggish performance and thrilling responsiveness. RC hobbyists, whether competing in organised races, enjoying weekend bashing, or exploring the technical side of RC tuning, understand that quality pinion gears are non-negotiable investments.
If you're searching for reliable RC car parts in the UK, or you're an experienced builder looking for OEM Axial replacement components, this 48P 13T pinion gear is exactly what you need. The steel construction ensures longevity under demanding conditions, whilst the precise 2.3mm shaft diameter guarantees perfect fit and engagement with compatible RC drivetrain systems.
Key Features
- Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which provides exceptional durability and wear resistance compared to plastic alternatives, ensuring your RC car's drivetrain maintains optimal performance over extended use and in demanding driving conditions.
- 48P Pitch Specification — The 48-pitch (48P) designation indicates the gear's tooth profile and size ratio, which is a standard specification in RC car design that ensures compatibility with matching spur gears and drivetrain components engineered to work with this precise pitch measurement.
- 13-Tooth Configuration — With 13 teeth, this pinion gear is specifically sized to deliver acceleration-focused performance characteristics, making it suitable for racing applications and situations where quicker acceleration off the line is desired.
- 2.3mm Shaft Bore — The precisely manufactured 2.3mm shaft diameter ensures a secure fit with compatible RC motor shafts and drivetrain components, preventing slippage and maintaining consistent power transmission to the wheels.
- OEM Axial Component — As a genuine Axial part number Z-AXI212016, this pinion gear meets the manufacturer's exact specifications and engineering tolerances, guaranteeing seamless integration with Axial RC vehicles and compatible models from other manufacturers using standard 48P drivetrain systems.
- Lightweight Design — Despite its robust steel construction, the pinion gear maintains minimal weight, which is critical in RC car design where unsprung mass directly impacts handling, acceleration response, and overall vehicle dynamics.
Technical Performance
This Axial pinion gear represents precision engineering optimised for RC car performance. The 48P pitch standard is widely adopted across the RC industry, particularly in 1/10-scale electric RC cars, 1/8-scale buggies, and various RC truck platforms. The 13-tooth configuration positions this pinion as an acceleration-focused gear option, meaning it prioritises quicker throttle response and faster initial acceleration at the cost of slightly lower top-end speed compared to higher-tooth-count alternatives. The steel material specification is crucial because it resists deformation, tooth stripping, and wear that can gradually develop in plastic gears, particularly during high-torque situations such as hard acceleration, jumping, or crawling over rocky terrain in RC crawler applications. The 2.3mm shaft bore is a standard specification that integrates with most modern brushless and brushed RC motors designed for 1/10-scale and smaller RC vehicles. Quality pinion gears like this one are maintenance items that should be inspected regularly during RC car ownership, especially if you're operating your vehicle in competitive racing environments or subjecting it to intensive weekend bashing sessions. When your existing pinion gear shows signs of wear, tooth damage, or wobbling, replacement becomes essential to maintaining the integrity of your RC car's drivetrain and preventing secondary damage to your spur gear and motor components.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need one for my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear that attaches to your RC car's motor shaft and meshes with the larger spur gear to transmit power from the motor to the wheels. The tooth count directly determines your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics. If your existing pinion gear becomes worn, damaged, or stripped, replacement is essential to restore performance and prevent damage to other drivetrain components.
- Will this 48P 13T pinion gear fit my RC car? — This pinion gear will fit any RC car or truck that uses a standard 48-pitch drivetrain system with a 2.3mm motor shaft bore. This includes many Axial models, as well as compatible vehicles from other manufacturers. We recommend checking your vehicle's manual or parts diagram to confirm compatibility before purchasing, or contacting our team at RC Model Shop for assistance.
- What is the difference between 13-tooth and higher-tooth pinion gears? — Lower tooth counts like 13T prioritise acceleration and initial throttle response, making them ideal for racing applications where quick off-the-line performance matters. Higher tooth counts reduce acceleration slightly but increase top speed. The choice depends on your driving style, terrain, and whether you're optimising for racing, bashing, or mixed use.
- Is steel better than plastic for pinion gears? — Yes, steel pinion gears offer superior durability, wear resistance, and longevity compared to plastic alternatives. Whilst steel gears are slightly more expensive, they maintain consistent performance longer and resist tooth stripping, particularly under high-torque conditions or intensive use. For serious RC hobbyists and competitive racers, steel is the industry-standard choice.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — This depends on usage intensity and driving conditions. Casual recreational drivers might get months of use before replacement, whilst competitive racers and intensive bashers should inspect pinion gears regularly for wear and replace them as soon as teeth show damage or wear patterns. Proactive replacement of worn gears prevents damage to your spur gear and motor.
